This invention relates to sanding blocks used in supporting abrasive strips such as sandpaper, emery paper or the like, the primary object of the invention being to provide a sanding block which will be exceptionally light in weight and easily operated.

An important object of the invention is to provide means for connecting the handle of the block to the base or body portion thereof the handle acting to clamp the sanding or abrasive strip in position over the bottom of the base of the device.

Another important object of the invention is to provide a sanding block which may be operated close to the wall or into corners, the device being operated with either end directed forwardly.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a sanding device of this character including a base plate and a yieldable handle having means to grip the ends of the sanding strip between the base plate and handle, means being also provided for holding the handle centered over the plate at all times.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the

invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevational view illustrating the handle, the lower ends of the handle and base plate of the device being shown in section.

Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a fragmental perspective view illustrating one of the inturned ends of the base plate, with enlargements shown at one end of the device as extending inwardly over the base plate centering the handle of the device.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating one end of the handle and. illustrating the rearwardly extended brace flanges at the base of the handle.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the sanding device comprises a base plate 5 constructed of sheet metal material, having one of its ends extended upwardly and rearwardly providing the flange G that overlies one end of the base plate in spaced relation with respect thereto.

The opposite end of the base plate 5 is extended upwardly and rearwardly at an oblique angle providing the flange l which has its extreme upper edge bent rearwardly at 8 where it lies in 2 spaced relation with the main portion of the flange.

Disposed along the longitudinal side edges of the base plate 5 are upstanding flanges 9 which have the inwardly extended enlargements l0 formed adjacent to one of the respective ends thereof, the enlargements l0 overlying the base plate 5 in spaced relation therewith.

The handle by means of which the device is operated, comprises a length of sheet metal material of substantially U-shaped formation, indicated by the reference character ll, one end of the handle being extended forwardly at substantially right angles to the leg l2 of the handle, providing a forwardly extended flange I3 adapted to fit under the flange 6 of the base holding one end of the abrasive strip secured to the device, in position by frictional contact therewith. The abrasive strip in the present showing is indicated by the reference character l4 and may be either a sanding strip or emery cloth. However, it is contemplated to use an emery cloth or sanding strip wherein the cloth or sanding strip adjacent to the ends thereof, will be free of abrasive material presenting a smooth surface for contact under the end flanges of the base.

At one end of the handle II, are rearwardly extended substantially triangular flanges l5 which are arranged that they will engage the upper surface of the base plate 5 and closely fit between the enlargements I0, holding the handle centered on the base plate.

The opposite end of the handle H is bent inwardly and upwardly, providing a curved flangeengaging portion 16 and a flexible tongue IT, the curved flange forming a rounded surface for cooperating with the flange 8 in gripping the opposite end of the abrasive strip or cloth held by the device. The tongue I! affords means whereby the curved flange engaging portion of the device may be moved to disengage the flange 8 and release the abrasive sheet or cloth.

From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a sanding device or sanding block which is exceptionally light and one wherein the handle provides means for cooperating with flanges of the base plate of the device in gripping the adhesive strip or cloth thereto.

It might be further stated that the construction also affords means whereby the cloth or abrasive strip may be readily and easily removed or replaced without the necessity of using tools of any character to remove and replace screws,

3 bolts or the like commonly used in securing abrasive sheets or strips to sanding blocks.

It will further be noted that when pressure is applied to the handle, the ends of the handle will be moved outwardly or into close engagement with the sanding strip or sheet to press it into U-shaped yieldable member, the ends of the han dle being extended laterally for engagement under the end flanges of the base plate gripping the abengagement with the flanges of the base plate, 7

clamping the abrasive strip or sheet to the device.
