POCKET FASTENER FOR PENS AND THE LIKE Filed Aug. 30, 1945 IN V EN TOR. Cawnce FJ/ZJWZZQ BY M Mira;
Patented Sept. 13, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENTVOFFICE POCKET FASTENER FOR PENS AND THE LIKE H Clarence F. Norlin, Chicago, 111. Application August 30, 1945, Serial No.'.613,669
This invention relates to pocket fastening means employed for pens, pencils, thermometers. instruments, screw drivers and the like, etc. In order to show one application of the invention herein described, the fastening means is shown as attached to a fountain pen from which it will be seen that other applications are analogously possible for many other purposes.
Heretofore, pen and pencil clips have proven unsatisfactory primarily for the reason that such clips are either too tight or tool loose. In the former case, it eventually leads to the tearing of the wearers pocket material as well as presenting the difficulty of slipping the clip over the edge of the -pocket. In the case of the clips being too loose, there. is always the possibility that the wearer may lose the pen or the same loosens and slidesdown into the pocket bottom to the inconvenience of the user.
It is one of the main object of the present invention to provide pocket fastening means for pens or the like which provides a suitable clip that is carried by the pen for movement toward or away therefrom, and to provide means selectively movable and carried by the pen which cooperates with the clip to actuate the same toward the surface of the pen or away therefrom. In this manner, the clip may be moved outwardly away from the pen to permit easy insertion over the pocket material to bring the latter between the clip and the pen, and by moving the adjustable means, the clip is urged toward the pen surface to clamp the wearers pocket material tightly in pen holding position between the clip and the pen. This establishes a convenient and easily operated clip structure that safeguards against the loss or displacement of the pen or the like as the case may be.
Another object of the present invention is to provide one or more of such clips which are also movable toward or away from the surface of the pen, these clips havin hooks connected therewith for the purpose of partially or entirely penetrating the pocket material adjacent a clip to further safeguard the loss or displacement of the particular instrument to which such fastening means is attached.
There are other features and advantages associated with the present invention which shall hereinafter be expressed in the following detailed description having reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary elevational view of a portion of a fountain pen having the fastening iii) 2 Claims. (01.24-11) means of the present invention attached thereto; and
Fig. 2 is another fragmentary portion of a fountain pen illustrating a' modified arrangement of fastenin 'means. a
A preferred construction'of pocket fastener is illustrated in Fig. 1 as applied to the cap end of a fountain pen. This construction'comprises a pen it having a cap .H formed with a reduced end l2 having a cap portion 13 providing a head and a shoulder M." A resilient clip 15 is carried by the cap for movement toward and away from the side surface thereof and may'be secured to the cap in any fashion to obtain this particular movement. With the-present construction, the end it issec-ured to the-head l2 as shown in Fig. 1, such clip having .a horizontally disposed portion l1 recessed within the side slot la in the reduced portion i=2 of the head, the slot l8 holding the clip l5 against lateral displacement relative to the side of the cap of the pen. The outer free end H) of the clip is formed into a hook 20 shaped substantially as shown in Fig. 1.
Adjustable means in the form of a ring 2| encircles the reduced portion I2 of the cap and is outwardly knurled as shown to form a grip for selective finger operation whereby this ring may be moved into the dotted line position in Fig. 1 or into the full line position as there shown. The inner peripheral surface 22 of the ring acts to cam the horizontally disposed portion l'! of the clip into different selected positions within the recess [8. Two positions are shown in Fig. 1 wherein the clip I5 is positioned with the hook 20 against the side of the cap II and the other position is shown in dotted lines where the clip is moved outwardly by its resiliency into its extreme outward position when the adjustable ring 2! is moved against the shoulder M of the head l3.
Attention is directed to the fact that the clip I5 is of a semi-resilient or entirely resilient material and is formed for normal disposition in the dotted line location shown in Fig. 1. By moving the adjustable ring into the full line position shown in Fig. 1, the spring clip is moved toward the surface of the pen so as to penetrate the pocket material of a wearer and/or grip the cloth and clamp the same tightly against the surface of the pen thereby holding the pen in place and against loss thereof. Also, it should be noted that various shapes of clips may be employed and can be appropriately formed to obtain various coacting relationships between the clip and the pen body or the cap surface as demonstrated in this construction.
Referring to Fi 2, a modified construction of pocket holding means for pens or the like includes a pivotally mounted operating means in the form of the ring 23 which can be moved into one of two positions determined by the depressions 24 and 25 in the spring clip 26. Clip 26 is secured to the cap in any suitable recess 30 which permits the depression of the notched end of the clip 26 under the action, of the cam portion of the swingable loop 235 This loop' or ring 23 is pivotally supported at 3| from a suitable ear or ears 32 connected and formed as part of the tip 21. The portion of the ring 23 which engages thedepressions or notches 24 and 25 of'the clip 26' is shown at 33 and a knurled knob 34 is oppositely disposed from the cam portion 33 oh the-ring 23;
It should also be noted that this'knurledknob 34 is protected from brushing loose and moving into the notch 24 position by being substantially eonfined within the protected confines of the bend 35in the clip 26,; r V V The Fig. 2 construction also includes a hooked end 36' forming a; p rtion-oh the-clip; Z6, and this hooked end 35- maybe adapted ito fit into a; suitable recess or opening 31 formed-lathe side of the body of the pen capjl as shown;
Other variations;and modificationsrin' the exact form; combination of elements, and in the constructions shown anideseribed-arecontemplated; Such variations and modifications: shall he governed by the breadth scope: of the; appended claims directedto the'stmctures exemplifying the principles of the present invention;
What Iiclainris:
1. In a device ofi'the'class described," a writing elementshaving areduced upper end portion, a resilient. clamping. element. having a straight portion positioned upon said 'redueed end portion with its adjacent end anchored 'to' sa'id writing element, said clamping element having an upwardly sloping portion extending from said straight portion and terminating in a. portion having a hooked end; said sloping portion normally tending to move said clamping element away from said writing element, a slidable ring 7 upon said reduced portion extending over said straight portion and movable against said sloping portion for forcing said hooked (and against said writing element. 7 r
