Y.
Application November 23, 1946, Serial No. 711,957
4 Claims.
My present invention relates to handbags and more particularly to handbags of the type known as hat boxes.
It is an object of my present invention to provide handbags of the above type which are of particularly light weight.
It is a further object of my present invention to provide hat boxes and similar articles of luggage which are of particularly simple construction and easy to manufacture.
Finally, it is also an object of my present invention to provide light weight pieces of luggage which are sturdy in construction and withstand tear and wear during use.
The novel features which I consider as characteristic for my invention are set forth in particular in the appended claims.
The invention it- 2 H, as clearly shown on the right hand side of Fig. 4.
self, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a hat box according to my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a top view of the hat box shown in Fig.1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the hat box shown in Figs. 1 and 2, along line 33 of Fig. 2; and
' Fig. 4 is a front view of the peripheral wall of a hat box of the type shown in Figs. 1 to 3 in unassembled fiat position with part of the lining removed.
The construction of a preferred hat box construction according to my present invention is best explained by describing its mode of production.
First, a fiat relatively stifi band-shaped member ID having the outline shown in Fig. 4 is cut. This band-shaped member H] has at both ends edge portions I I which are abutting against each other if the band-shaped member I!) is bent so as to form the peripheral body wall 12 shown in Fig. 3. Furthermore, band l has at both ends also overlapping edge portions I3 which are secured to each other after forming the peripheral body wall l2 by rivets in well known manner.
I wish to note that by providing the abutting edge portions I I it is possible to produce a peripheral body 'wall l2 having exactly the desired predetermined shape and size.
The band-shaped member ID is provided with a decorative cover sheet l5 glued to its outer face and bent over its bottom edge l6 and its top edge After the cover sheet 15 is glued to the bandshaped member ID, a sliding clasp fastener 18 and a peripheral lining H! are sewn to it near its upper edge I! as clearly shown on the left hand side of Fig. 4.
Thereafter, a narrow stiffening band 20 forming the peripheral cover member 2| is covered in the same way as described above in connection with the peripheral body member I2 with a decorative cover 22 and provided with the sliding clasp fastener 23 and the peripheral lining 24 which latter are secured to the narrow stiffening band 20 by sewing.
The two sliding clasp fasteners l8 and 23 form part of the same sliding clasp fastener arrangement and thus the band-shaped body member ID and the narrow stiifening band 20 forming part of the cover are secured by this sliding clasp fastener arrangement to each other.
It should be mentioned that before the sliding clasp fastener l8 and lining I!) are sewn to the band-shaped member ID, the loop-shaped handle 25 is slipped over the member ID as shown in Fig.
4 and secured to it by the same seam which attaches the sliding clasp fastener l8 and lining l9 to this member.
After the peripheral walls are prepared and have the appearance shown in Fig. 4, they are connected at their ends with each other by rivets connecting the ends of the band-shaped member l6 and thus forming the peripheral body wall l2 and by other rivets connecting the ends of the narrow stiffening band 20 and thus forming the peripheral cover wall 2|.
Thereafter, the bottom and top side wall units are prepared. The bottom side wall unit consists of a narrow annular member 29 the diameter of which is slightly smaller than the diameter of the peripheral body wall I2 50 that this annular member tightly fits into'this peripheral body wall.
A highly flexible sheet forms the bottom side wall 30 and is glued and sewn to the outer face of the annular member 29 as clearly shown in Fig. 3. i
The thus prepared bottom side wall unit is forced into the peripheral wall l2 until the bottom edge 3! of the narrow annular member 29 is positioned adjacent to the bottom edge lfiof the peripheral body wall 82. In this position, the entire bottom side wall unit is secured to the peripheral body Wall by glueing or in any other manner.
Similarly. the top side wall unit consists of an ber having substantially the shape of said curved edge of said annular member and of a highly flexible lining cover entirely covering the opening formed by said curved ring member and secured to the same, said lining unit fitted into said handbag inside the same adjacent to said flexible side Wall so that said curved ring member is positioned between said curved edge of said curved annular member and said curved expansion member preventing unintentional removal of said lining unit.
2. In a handbag in combination a cylindrical peripheral wall having a circular edge; an annular member having a circular edge and fitting into said cylindrical peripheral wall of said handbag in spaced relation thereto, said annular member arranged within said cylindrical peripheral wall with its circular edge adjacent to said circular edge of said cylindrical peripheral wall; a highly flexible side wall covering the opening formed by said annular member and reaching over said circular edge of the same into the space between said cylindrical peripheral wall and said annular member and secured to the latter; a
circular spring expansion member having substantially the shape of said circular edge of said annular member and arranged within said handbag adjacent said circular edge of said annular member and said side wall of said handbag and permanently stretching the same so as to keep it taut; and a lining unit consisting of a circular ring member having substantially the shape of said circular edge of said annular member and of a highly flexible lining cover entirely covering the opening formed by said circular ring member and secured to the same, said lining unit fitted into said handbag inside the same superimposed upon said highly flexible side wall so that said circular ring member is positioned adjacent to said circular edge of said annular member preventing unintentional removal of said lining unit.
3. In a handbag a cylindrical peripheral wall having a circular edge; a side wall unit consisting of an annular member having a circular edge and fitting into said cylindrical peripheral wall in spaced relation thereto and of a highly flexible side wall cover covering the opening formed by said annular member and reaching over said circular edge of the same and secured to the outer face of said annular member; means firmly securing said side wall unit into said cylindrical peripheral wall so that said circular edge of said annular member forming part of said side wall unit is adjacent to said circular edge of said cylindrical peripheral wall; a spring expansion member having substantially the shape of said circular edge of said annular member and arranged within said side wall unit adjacent said circular edge of said annular member and said highly flexible side wall cover and permanently 6o stretching the same so as to keep it taut; and a lining unit consisting of a circular ring member having substantially the shape of said circular edge of said annular member and of a highly flexible lining cover entirely covering the opening formed by said circular ring member and secured to the same, said lining unit fitted into said side wall unit adjacent to said highly flexible side Wall cover so that said circular ring member is positioned between said circular edge of said annular member and said spring expansion member preventing unintentional removal of said lining unit.
4. In a handbag a curved peripheral wall having a curved edge; a side wall unit consisting of an annular member having a curved edge and fitting into said curved peripheral wall in spaced relation thereto and of a highly flexible side wall cover covering the opening formed by said annular member and reaching over said curved edge of the same and secured to the outer face of said annular member; means firmly securing said side wall unit into said curved peripheral wall so that said curved edge of said annular member forming part of said side wall unit is adjacent to said curved edge of said curved peripheral wall; a spring expansion member having substantially the shape of said curved edge of saidannular member and arranged within said side wall unit adjacent said curved edge of said annular member and said highly flexible side wall cover and permanently stretching the same so as to keep it taut; and a lining unit consisting of a curved ring member having substantially the shape of said curved edge of said annular member and of a highly flexible lining cover entirely covering the opening formed by said curved ring member and secured to the same, said lining unit fitted into said side wall unit adjacent to said highly flexible side wall cover so that said curved ring member is positioned within said annular member adjacent to said curved circular edge of the same preventing unintentional removal of said lining unit.
