Application September 9, 1946, Serial No. 695,793
2 Claims. 1
My invention relates to a detachable handle and connection, for rotating the operating shaft of a lifting jack or the like.
An important object of the invention is to provide means for detachably connecting the handle and rotary shaft or element, so that the connection cannot be improperly separated until the connecting element or yoke is swung to approximately right angles to the longitudinal axis of the shaft.
A further object of the invention is to provide means of the above mentioned character which will efiect a universal connection between the handle and shaft.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, strong and durable.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a. side elevation of a device embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same,
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section taken on line 33 of Figure 2, and,
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section taken on line 5-5 of Figure 3.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a shaft to be rotated. This may be a shaft which is horizontally arranged in use, such as the screwthreaded shaft of the jack shown in my pending application for Jack, Serial #636,778, filed December 22, 1945. This shaft may be held in a fixed horizontal position in use. The shaft Sis provided at its outer end with a spherically curved end or face '6.
The numeral I designates a substantially U- shaped connecting element or yoke, comprising side of the shaft 5, when the connecting element 1 is swung to assume a position at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the shaft 5. The sides 8 are disposed upon opposite faces of the shaft 5, and are pivotally connected therewith by a pin I2, passing through a transverse opening I3, extending diametrically through the shaft 5, near and spaced from the end 6. The opening I3 is spaced from the end 6 a greater distance than the distance from the opening I3 to the side of shaft 5. The curved face or end 6 is concentric with the pivot I2 in a direction axially of the shaft 5.
The numeral I4 designates 2. preferably rigid rod, constituting the body portion of the handle. This rod may be of a suitable length to reach under an automobile or the like to the jacked position thereunder. At one end, the rod I4 has a radial crank I5, carrying a hand grip I6. At its opposite end, the rod I4 is bent to provide a diagonal axial extension II, which is bent at its free end to provide a relatively long straight transverse pivotal portion I8. This pivotal portion is circular in cross section so that it can turn upon its longitudinal axis within the socket II. The entire rod and all portions thereof may be circular in cross section. The relatively long straight pivotal portion I8 has its longitudinal center in alignment with the central longitudinal axis of the rod I4. At its free end, the long straight pivotal portion I8 is bent toprovide a diagonal or hooked extension I9, which projects outwardly longitudinally of the axis of the rod I I. This hooked extension extends laterally of the pivotal portion I8, as shown.
In use, when the pivotal portion I8 is held within the socket II, and the connecting element I is extending axially of the shaft 5, the spherically curved end 6 is in close relation to the pivotal portion I8 or substantially contacts therewith. The angular extension or hooked portion I9 now prevents the pivotal portion from being withdrawn from the socket I I, since the pivotal portion I8 will contact with the curved end 6. The rod I4 may be employed to rotate the shaft 6. The connecting element I may have limited turning movement upon the pivot I2 and the pivotal portions I8 may turn within the socket II, thus affording a universal connection between the rod and shaft 5. When it is desired to separate the rod from the shaft 5, the jack being removed from beneath the car, the connecting element or yoke I is swung to a position at right angles to the shaft 5, as indicated in Figure 3, and there is then ample clearance between the pivotal por- 3 tion It! and the shaft, to permit such pivotal portion being shifted inwardly toward the shaft, so that the lateral extension or hooked portion 19 will clear the end 9, and the pivotal portion may then be removed from within the socket. The parts cannot be separated until the pivotal portion I8 can clear the ends of the curved face 6. It is thus seen that the pivotal portion l8 will be securely retained within the socket until the connecting element or yoke 1 is arranged at substantially right angles to the longitudinal axis of the shaft 5, at which time the parts may be readily separated, as explained.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to .be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A detachable handle connection, comprising a shaft having a free end, a substantially U- shaped connecting element including. sides and a closed end forming a socket, the sides receiving the free end of the shaft between them and the closed end being spaced from the free end when the U-shaped connecting element extends longitudinally of the shaft, a transverse pin pivotally connecting the sides with the shaft and spaced from the free end of the shaft for a greater distance than it is spaced from that side of the shaft toward which the U-shaped connecting element is swung, and a rod provided with a transverse pivotal portion disposed generally at right angles to the rod and adapted for insertion within the socket to contact with the closed end of the U- shaped connecting element and the free end of the shaft, said transverse pivotal portion having a lateral extension near its free end which projects from the shaft, the. arrangement being such that when the substantially U-shaped connecting element: is swung to a position generally at right angles to the side of the shaft, the distance between such side and closed end is sufficiently great to permit the separation of the pivotal portion from the socket.
2. A detachable handle connection, comprising a shaft having a curved end, a substantially U-shaped connecting element including sides and a closed end forming a socket, the sides receiving the curved end of the shaft between them and the closed end being spaced from the curved end when the U-shaped connecting element extends longitudinally of the shaft, a transverse pin pivotally connecting the sides with the shaft and spaced from the curved end of the sl'iaft for a greater distance than it is spaced from' that side of the shaft toward which the U-sha'ped connecting element is swung, the transverse pin being substantially concentric with the curved end. and a rod provided with a transverse pivotal portion disposed generally at right angles to the rod and adapted for insertion within the socket to contact. with the closed end of the U-shaped connecting element and the curved end of the shaft, said transverse pivotal portion, having a lateral extension near its free end which projects from the shaft, the arrangement being suchthat when the substantially U-shaped connecting element is swimg to a position generally at right angles to the side of the shaft, the distance between such side and the closed end isv sufficiently great to permit the separation of the pivotal portion from the socket,
WILBUR JACKSON.
