UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. TUNNINGTON, OF ELYRIA, OHIO.
SWING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,893, dated August 16, 1881.
Application filed March 18, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH ALLBUT TUN- NINGTON, of Elyria, Lorain county, Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Swing, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved swing which can be convenientlysuspended from the walls of a room, and which can be operated by the person occupying the seat of the swing, or by a person in any other part of the room.
The invention consists in a seat suspended by wires or ropes from a V-shaped lever pivoted between two parallel bars suspended from wires or ropes fastened to the walls of the room, between which bars a pulley is pivoted at each end, over which pulleys ropes or hands pass from the ends of the V-shaped lever to the seat for operating the swing.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved swing. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bars and the V- shaped lever and the pulleys pivoted between the same. V
Similar letters oi: reference indicate corresponding parts.
The seat A. which may be of any desired construction, is suspended by four ropes, B, or equivalents, provided with hooks O at the upper ends from the ends of a V-shaped lever, D, pivoted at its angle between two bars, E, provided with hooks F at the ends. Hooks G are attached to the walls H of the rooms and wires or equivalents J pass from these hooks G to the hooks F of the bars E, and are drawn as taut as possible. The hooks G are fastened to the standards or uprights of the wall, or to the door or window casings. A roller, K, is pivoted'between the bars E E, at each end of the same, and a rope or equivalent, L, passes from one of the ends of the V-shaped lever D over one or both of the rollers K down to the seat A, and is preferably provided with a handle, M; or a rope may be attached to each end of the lever D, and may pass over the rollers down to the seat.
An arm may project upward from the angle of the lever D, and the ropes L may be fastened to the upper end of this arm instead of to the ends of the V-shaped lever D.
The operation is as follows: If the person occupying the seat A draws the rope B, or the ropes alternately, the swing will oscillate; or a person in some other part of the room can pull the rope L to oscillate the swing. The rope L can also be attached to a rocking-chair, and the swing will then be oscillated by the movement of the chair, or the rope L may be attached to a treadle. The ropes B B, suspending the seat A, can be unhooked. from the lever D very conveniently, and likewise the bars E can be removed very easily, the hooks G G only remaining in the wall. The bars E E may also be supported by suitable framing, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A swing made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a seat suspended from a V-shaped lever pivoted between two bars, which V-shaped lever is actuated by means of a rope or equivalent passing down to the seat, as set forth.
2. In a swing, the combination, with the seat A, of the V-shaped lever D, from which it is suspended, the bars E E, the pulleys K K, and the rope or ropes L L, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a swing, the combination, with the seat A, of the ropes B, the V-shaped lever D, the bars E, the pulleys K K, the rope or ropes L, and the wires J J, for suspending the bars E E, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH ALLBU'I TUN N [X GTON.
