UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANNA P. FOBES, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
INVALID-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,046, dated January 2, 1883.
Application filed September 20, 188?. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANNAP. FoBEs, of Syracuse, Onondaga county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Invalid-Bed, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the'accompanying drawing, in which is shown a perspective view of the bed complete.
My object is to produce an easy and comfortable bed of such construction that the invalid can perform all of the necessary opera tions of nature without being raised or lifted or disturbed.
My invention consists of a bed constructed of cloth or canvas mounted upon a framework, and having a trap-opening therein centrally located, the whole being suspended from the ends or corners of the frame-work by ropes or chains attached or connected to upright posts, or to the ceiling, so that the bed will It is constructed as follows:
'A is a piece of cloth or canvas mounted upon two strips, B B,and securely fastened thereto. 1
G G are pieces of wood between the ends of the strips B, connecting them together and making a rectangular frame-work. These pieces 0 are of such length as to distend the canvas A and hold it so, and prevent the sagging of the canvas when a weight is placed upon it.
D is the trap, made of such size as to fill or cover the trap-opening. It is usually suspended from one edge, and may be a part of the canvas A or attached to it. Suitable devices--such as straps and buckles-are pro- .vided for holding the trap up when the opening is closed by it.
E E are upright posts with hooks or rings Springs-can be used in connection with the ropes or chains to obviate perpendicular rigidity.
- The strips B can be mortised into the pieces (J, or jonrna-led therein, so that by twisting eitherstrip the sag caused by the stretching of the cloth or canvas can be taken up, suitable devices beingused to hold the strips when twisted up, such as a equivalent device.
The bed can be suspended from the ceiling, if desired, in any ordinary manner.
What I. claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, ist 1. In an invalid-bed, the combination ot'the frame-work B O, carrying the canvas bed-bottom A, having therein the adjustable trap I), with the posts E and suspending ropes or chains b, and hooks or rings a, when constructed and operating together substantially as and for the purposesset forth.
2. An invalid-bed provided with a centrallylocated trap, and suspended by ropes orchains, constructed substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of September, 1882.
