This invention relates to improvements in illustrated matter, such as advertising circulars, sales and campaign letters, personal correspondence, catalogs and all manner of reading matter which it is desired to illustrate.

The principal object of the invention is to provide for the simple and inexpensive production of illustrated matter as aforesaid in such a way as to effect material saving of paper. A further object is to produce illustrated matter in which letter press and illustration are interchangeable from time to time, as desired. A still further object is to provide illustrated matter of novel, attractive and pleasing appearance in which the persuasive effect of illustration of text is obtained without the usual cost of same. Another object is to provide for secure attachment of illustrations or other matter to printed or other body sheets without use of adhesives, staples, clips, or the like and in such a manner that the illustration may be readily removed, if desired, but will not be liable to accidental displacement. Still another object'is to provide for the protection of illustrations which it is desired to attach to letters, catalog pages and the like. Various otherobjects and the advantages of the invention may be ascertained from the following description and the accompanying drawings.

The present day shortage of paper and skilled labour in the printing and lithographing trades greatly curtails the use of illustrated matter for business and other promotion and such curtailments are likely to continue for some time. This invention enables such materials and labour as are available to be used most economically and to the best advantage, thereby to produce the greatest possible variety of effects with the minimum expenditure of material. It has been customary to imprint both letter press and illustration on the same sheet and as most illustration is in half-tone and requires expensive paper for its production, the result has been the use of such expensive papers for letter press that could well be printed on less expensive paper. Moreover, if any change of either letter press or illustration is required, the entire product must be scrapped. According to this invention, illustration and letter press are imprinted on separate sheets which are releasably connected in the special manner hereinafter described to produce the desired complete result.

In the accompanying drawing, the figure is a plan view of a body sheet and an illustration unit combined therewith in accordance with one practical embodiment of the invention.

Referring to the drawing in detail, H designates a body sheet, such as a letter sheet, and I2 designates generally a cooperating illustration unit.

The body sheet H may contain any desired typed or printed matter l3 and at any suitable location thereon has a reserve space M whereon is superimposed the illustration unit I2. In the space M the sheet H is provided with a pair of spaced apart slits [5, 15a, at least one of which is of substantially U-shape to provide a tab 19 which extends toward the other of said slits.

The illustration unit 12 is of plural-leaf form and includes a bottom leaf N and any desired number of additional leaves l8. Said unit may be in the form of a strip divided into separate leaves by fold lines, or it may be of booklet form having superimposed leaves swingably connected together in any suitable manner. In any event, the bottom leaf ll of said unit is provided at different edges therewith with tabs [6 which extend through the slits l5, |5a of the body sheet H and underlie said body sheet, whereby the illustration unit 12 as an entirety is detachably connected to said body sheet and is held against superficial movement over the latter. Moreover, the tongue 19 of said body sheet H overlies a marginal portion of the bottom leaf ll of the unit I2, and the corresponding marginal portion or portions of the leaf or leaves [8, as the case may be, overlies or overlie said marginal portion of said bottom leaf when said leaf or leaves i8 is or are disposed in superimposed relationship to said bottom leaf ll. It will thus be apparent that when the leaf or leaves I8 is or are disposed in superimposed relationship to the bottom leaf ll, the said marginal portion or portions of said leaf or leaves 18 may be tucked beneath the tab I9 and will be held by the latter in their said superimposed relationship to said bottom leaf ll. It will be equally apparent that when it is desired to swing the leaf or leaves I8 to open or non-superimposed relationship to the bottom leaf H, this readily is permitted simply by disengaging the said marginal portion of the leaf or leaves [8 from beneath the tab 19. In short, it is apparent that the present structure serves the dual purpose of detachably connecting the illustration unit I 2 as an entirety to the body sheet H and of .aifording means in the form of the tab IQ for releasably holding the leaf or leaves l8 in superimposed relationship to the bottom leaf l'l.

Without further description it is believed that the invention will be readily understood, and its advantages appreciated. It is desired to point 3 out, however, that while only a single specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it is readily capable of specifically difierent embodiments within its spirit and scope as defined in the appended claim.

I claim:

Matter of the character described, comprising, a body sheet having a plurality of slits therein, one of said slits being of substantially U-shape to form .a tab, a plural-leaf unit comprising a bottom leaf superimposed upon said body sheet and at least one other leaf connected to said bottom leaf for swinging movement to and from superimposed relationship thereto, tongues projecting from difierent edges of said bottom leaf through said slits and underlying said body sheet to hold said unit as an entirety detachably connected to said body sheet, said tab extending into overlying rela- REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
