1 Claim. 1
This invention is an improvement in toys of the mechanical variety comprising movable parts that are actuated to give the article alife-like effect.
One object of the invention is to provide a toy of very simple construction having the appearance of a, quadruped or bird with means for securing it on a wheeled platform and legs that are caused to swing as the supporting platform or base is rolled along a supporting surface.
On the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of a toy partly broken away, according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of same, seen from beneath.
The numeral I indicates a base or platform upon which is the figure of a horse or some other animal 2. The figure has a body and four legs 3, which are pivotally connected to the figure at 4. The figure is supported by a post 5, rigidly attached to the figure and the platform I.
The platform has bearings 6 at the sides to receive axles 1. The latter have wheels 8, four in number, to enable the toy to be easily propelled forward or backward. The top of the platform has slots 9 therein adjacent the bottom of the legs 3, and the lower ends or feet Hi thereof have extensions II that go down through the slots into operative proximity to cranks I2 on the axles 1. Thus, when the top is moved on the wheels 8, the cranks strike the extensions II. The legs 3 are thereby made to swing, and. the figure of the animal looks as if it is walking or trotting, as it is mounted on the member 5.
The toy is inexpensive to make, easy to operate and not likely to get out of order. While I have shown a specific embodiment of the toy, I do not limit the invention to the exact details set forth herein, but reserve the right to make changes that fall within the general meanings of the terms of the appended claim.
While I have shown the toy as constructed with pivoted legs with extensions that are actuated by the cranks I2, I of course use this method of operation to operate the other pivoted parts or members of a figure mounted on a similar platform toimpart to the toy the appearance of life and motion.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A toy having a platform with a post thereon, a figure fixed to the top of the post, said figure having depending legs pivotally connected at their upper ends to said body, the platform having longitudinal slots therein adjacent the lower ends of said legs, and bearings on said platform, axles in said bearings, and wheels for said axles, the legs having free extensions at the lower ends going through said slots and the axles having cranks disconnected from the extensions but in operative proximity to the latter to make repeated contact with the extensions and impart a free swinging movement to same and said legs about the pivotal connection thereof with said body, as the toy is rolled about on said wheels.
