GQMMODE CHAIR James Samuel Edens. Baltimore, Md, assignor to Ruth La Vera Bush, Greenville, S. C.
Application August 24, 1944, Serial No. 551,071
The invention relates to a chair, and more especially to an infant's combination chair and commode of portable type.
The primary object of the invention is the provision ofa structure of this character, wherein a child or infant can be retained with safety, the structure being convertible for its service as a commode, when desired, and the infant or child may be fed from a tray supported by the structure for such purpose.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a structure of this character, wherein the assembly thereof is novel and unique, and is susceptible of being detachably mounted on a support, for occupancy, either for use as a chair, commode or for feeding purposes, in a convenient manner.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a structure of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient for the purposes intended thereof, readily and easily converted, strong, durable, assuring safety in the use thereof, and inexpensive to manufacture, the tray being conveniently adjusted for the proper positioning thereof.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which shows the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation of the structure constructed in accordance with the invention and in position for use as a chair.
Figure 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a top plan View.
Figure 5 is a top plan View showing the structure for service as a commode.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the clamp for holdin the structure in place on a support.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail A desighates generally the structure in its entirety constructed in accordance with the invention, and which comprises a lower body section or base Ill having a flat bottom ll, upright closed back l2, opposite upright closed ends 13, a, flat top H, provided with an opening l5 effective for com- 1 Claim. (Cl. 155-31) mode purposes, and an open front, respectively,
the latter being adapted for closure by a front panel IE to a slide drawer H, which is removably fitted within the body section it] for the emptying of contents when the latter is used as a commode.
Detachably superimposed on the body section it is a chair section or seat I8,'its bottom area I9 has contact with the top M when at rest and matches the same in its size, while the sides and back 29 and 2!, respectively of this section l8 are continuations of each other and are integral with the bottom area it, to have the fore of the chair completely open, so that the limbs of an infant or child can protrude therethrough when occupying the chair section I 8 in the usual manner.
The sections l0 and [8 are detachably secured together by snap fasteners 22 which are located at the sides 28 of the said section R8 for convenience in the separation of both sections from each other when desired. At the fore portions of the sides 29 of the section l3, near the uppermost edges of such sides are horizontally arranged slots 23 for adjustably accommodating fasteners 2 1 for a feeding tray 25, the latter being horizontally supported in guides 26 between the sides 20 and can be arranged close to or away from an occupant in the chair section !8, as will be obvious from the drawings.
To make the structure A firm and secure on a suitable horizontal support, a portion of the latter being denoted at 2?, best seen in Figure 1 of the drawings, there is employed a post forming a guard 28, which at its upper portion rises a .tance above the bottom area E9 of the chair .v .on 48 to protrude between the limbs of a child or infant when occupying such section, to eliminate the possibility of the child or infant crawling through the fore opening in the chair section. This post or guard 28 next to the bottom area is has the overhang extension 29 for contact with the latter when the said post or guard 28 is placed in proper position.
Removably joined with this post or guard 28 at its lower end is a clamp formed with a jaw 39 having an upstanding shank 3! at substantially right angles to the latter for abutting the lowerrnost end of such post or guard for alignment therewith. The post or guard 28 has the lower portion 32 detachable and is removably fastened in place Soy threaded studs or nut carrying binding pins 33 and 3 3, respectively, pin 33 being on the post or guard 28, and the pin 34 on the lower portion the nuts for the pins being winged at 35. The portion 32 has a triangular shaped foot portion 38 which extends through the opening 39 in the front panel 16 of the drawer, to rest on the bottom thereof and when removed allows the disassembly of the structure.
The jaw 38 is equipped with a binding medium 36, which is hand adjustable, and is properly held against turning out of alignment with the said jaw by atongue, and groove fitting 3] therebe.-- tween, as-is lclearly shown in Figure-3: off'the draws ings.
The lower section of the post or shank 3| is pro, vided with an upwardly projecting tongue 40 having a slot 41 therein to receive the stud 34 of the intermediate section 32, and.theintennediatesec: tion is provided with a similar tongue dike-having, a slot 43 therein to receive the stud 33 of the upper section 28.
The structure is usable as a chair or air-com:- mode, it being convertible for such purposes, and the said structurecan be secured firmly and.secureljv in; place on a horizontal support for, oc cupancy. The. chair section 18 is removed from thebooly section i9, when thelatten is tobe used. as a commode.
What is claimed is:
Ina combinationchair. and:commode, thel combination, which comprises,.a boxrlikebase having a. bottom, a top,- Withside, walls, an, end. wall and having anopen front and, with a: commode opening in saidtop; a drawer removably. mounted 30 1,739,365
inthe baseand removable through. the front opening thereof, alseat havingca bottom with-side and, rear walls, and anopen frontpositioned on the post providing a clamp, said intermediate and lower sections of the post having upwardly proj'eoting, tongues with vertically disposed slots therein, threaded studs on the upper and intermediate, sections" of the post positioned in the slots of the tongues with the parts of the post assetnbled;,and;thumb nuts on said studs.
