Description
I. F. DOWNING.
Ladies Sewing-Chairs.
N0. 146,889.- Pa`tentedlan..27,1 874.
UNITEDy STATES PATENT OEEICE JEROME F. DO-WNING, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LADIES SEWING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,889, dated January Q7, 1874; application filed August 9, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROME F. DOWNING, of the city and county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Ladies Sewing-Chairs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view. p Fig. 2 is a view of the other side.
The object of my present improvement is to so construct a ladys sewing-chair as to provide, in connection therewith, each and every convenience, such as a drawer for work to be kept in, and a leaf so attached to the arm of the chair as to permit ot' its use in front as a lap-board, or of its being swung to the side of the chair, and there serve as a table for a work-basket, &c.
My invention consists in attaching a leaf in a socket-bearing in such manner as to allow of its having a free swinging movement, and which permits ot' its being used in front as a lap-board or held at the side as a work-table. The socket-bearing which supports the leaf is cast or otherwise connected with a slotted bearing-plate, which, in connection with the thumb-screw fastening, permits of its being adjusted andsecured at any desired point.
The construction and operation of my invention are as follows:
A is an ordinary arm-chair, which maybe of any desired pattern, and constructed of any suitable material. On the under surface of the seat or seat-board A are secured parallel grooved or recessed cleats a a, and in which are supported and slide the ribs b b'of an ordinary drawer, B. At the forward section of the arm C of the chair, and at the outer surface thereof, is permanent-ly attached a grooved bearing-plate, D. In the grooves d d of this plate rest the steadying-ribs of the slotted socket-bearing plate E. In this plate D is an opening provided with a female screw-thread, in which works the fastening thumb-screw G. E is a bearing-plate, which is cast or otherwise formed with a socket-bearing, E', and a longitudinal slot, e, through which passes the thumb-screw G, which serves to fasten the plate at any desired point, and which also permits of its ready adjustment. On the inner face of the plate E are parallel ribs or ridges, which enter and rest in the grooves d d ofthe plate, and which serve to steady and add permanence to the bearing. F is a leaf or board, which may be constructed of any suitablematerial, and maybe of any desired form, and may be so constructed as to fold at the center. 0n the under surface of this table is secured, by means of a suitable plate or other bearing, a swivel-pin, F', which is of such dimensions as to enter and t snugly in the socket-bearing E of the plate E; but, at the same time, their respective diameters must be such as to allow of the free revolution of the swivel-pin within the socket. rlhis swivel-pin F and socket connection E permit of the table F being attached at pleasure, and also of its bcing used in front as a lap-board for work to be cut out on, or of its being swung to the side and held in a true horizontal position, and there to serve as a iiat table to hold a workbasket, or for any other purpose, while the slotted plate E and thumb-screw G provide the means of its ready adjustment.
When the table is swung round in front to be used as a lap-board, it may be fastel'led by a hook and small staple, H, as shown in Fig. 2.
This chair may be provided with casters, or the ordinary stationary rockers, or with hinged rockers having rollers on their inner faces, as is shown in the accompanying drawing.
-What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In combination with the arm C of a chair, the plate D, slotted plate E, having a socketbearing, E', thumb-screw G, and leaf F, having a swivel bearing-pin, F', arranged to operate substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JEROME F. DOIVNING.
fitnesses F. E. J ossELYN, EDWIN A. SIMONDs.
