PATENT OFFICE.
MIL'roN H. KNAPP, on ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
SPECIFICATION forming partof` Letters Patent No. 244,623, dated July I9, 1881.
- Application iiled May 4, 1%81. (No model.) l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known-that I, MILTON VH. KNAPP, of Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Blow-Pipes, of which the following is a specification. v
The nature of myinvention relates to certain such as are usually employed by dentists and jewelers, by means of lwhich various adjustments are obtained which will-be found of great practical utility, and by which various sizes of iiame and intensity of the same can be had, or compound flames can be produced, as the varying conditions of the work in hand may render desirable.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the parts and their various com,- binations, as more fully hereinafter described.
Figure lis an elevation of my improved compound blow-pipe, partially in section. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective of the stand with the crotched or forked blow-pipe attached. Fig. 3 is a-central section of the burner attached to the standard by the universal joint.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part'ot` this specification, A is a metal base, of proper size and weight to give a firm and steady support to the parts attached thereto. B is a hollow arm or tube, which projects horizontally from this base, and is provided with the stop-cock C.' The tube B communicates with the vertical tube D, which contains a'jcttip, E. The tube-burner F, which is screwed upon the tube D, contains air-inlets c, slightly above the tip E, and serves also as support to the crucible-holder G.
H is an air-blast tube adjustably secured to the base A by the screw b passing through the slotted plate c. The upper end of the tube H is bifurcated, as shown in Fig. 2, the bifurcations leading up on opposite sides of the tube F and terminate in' two jet-tips, d d.
The hollow arm or tube B serves as a support to the hollow standard I, which is adjustably secured thereon byla set-screw, c. J is another standard, adjustably secured in the hollow standard I-by means of a set-screw, f.
K is a gas-tube, which joins the standard J at g, from which point up the standard J is also hollow, and forms a continuation for the tube K, and is provided with the stop-cock L, and swiveLM, connecting the standard J with .the pipe N. The pipe N, which is shown in Fig.
3 in section, is slipped into the tube-burner P 55 and terminates in a tip, O.
vSecured alongside the tube-burner N, and forming a slight angle therewith, is the blastpipe Q, which enters likewise the tube P and terminates at It. inlets h, and its openin g t' can, by the adjust- Aments above described, be brought in proximity to a crucible resting upon the holder G, Fig. l.
S isa tube conveying another air-blast through the jet-tip t to the blow-pipe iiame issuing at i.- This pipe S is adj ustably and re inovably secured upon the pipe N by means of the lug fm' and set-screw o, which latter engages in a slot, a, of the lug p secured to the tube N. 7o
T is a iiexible tube conveying the air-blast through the b ranch-tubes V, W, and U to the blast-jet-s before described.
X is a stop-cock in the flexible main tube T,
and r another stop-cock in the branch tube W. 7 5- Z is a exible tube conveying the gas to the burner F, while a branch tube, Y, provides the burner P.
In practice, the gas `being turned on and ignited at the burners, and the crucible contain- 8o ing the material to be `operated upon set into the basket G, any' desired blowpipe iiame. can be obtained by adjusting the blast-tubes S and H by means ofthe adjustments before described. The blastissuing through the tube 8 5 'E at d d can be obtained in a ring form by lowering the tube H, so as to make the blast impinge against the sides of the burner-tube P before arriving atthe frame. By raising the tube H a pointed iame is obtained, as the jets d d are slightly converging. The blast from the blow-pipe S can be directed upon the blowpipe flame issuing at 'i at any desired point, so as to concentrate theheat and produceapointed iarne, or a touchof the hand can remove it without disturbing the other adjustments. The
pipe N is also entirely under control of the hand, and can be adjusted upon the Work or removed without disturbing the other burner.
' As the entire effect of .the two blow-pipes IOO The tube P contains also air- 6o can be concentrated upon the work a very high degree of heat can be obtained, while at the.
which means a larger quantity of mixed gas can be obtained, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the burner P and the inclosed blow-pipe Q with the adjustable blowpipe S, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the burners F, provided With a blow-pipe, H, and the adjustable burner P, provided with the adjustable blowpipe S, when arranged and constructed substantially as specified.
