SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,318, dated October 19, 1886.

To all whom, it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ALBERT (J. FR'IESIGKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jack sonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Blow-Pipes and Lamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction of combined blow-pipe and lamp, designed principally for soldering and brazing.
It consists in the novel features more particularl y hereinafter set forth and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view, parts broken away, of a lamp of my construction embodying my improvements, the adjustment of the parts being shown by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly in section, showing a modified form of construction by dotted lines. Fig. 8 is a front view of the upper portion, showing the head and discharge-nozzles in section, and a modified form of base and standard. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail View of the nozzle. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail of the lower end of the aspirating-tube. Fig. 6 is an inverted plan view of the work-supporting table.
The reservoir A is provided with a tubular standard, A, on which is mounted the lamp B, work-holder C, and blow-pipe D, having a revoluble head, D, on its outer end provided with a series of radial nozzles, (l, of varying bores or discharge-orifices. A lateral branch, (1, communicating with the bore of the pipe D, connects with the upper end of the tubular standard by means of the flexible tube E. The sleeve D which supports the inner end is provided with a spring, cl, the free end of which, bearing on the standard, holds the pipe at any adjusted position.
The lamp is provided with a similar spring, a, by which it is held in place on the stand ard. It is centrally apertured and provided with a tubular casing, B, which surrounds.

The inner end of the work-holder G is fast cued to a sleeve-casting, G, which is adjustably held on the standard by a set-screw, c. The outer end is bent to extend upward and receive a table, K, which is free to revolve thereon. This table is composed of a spider, K, annulus 7t, and wire-gauze it. The latter is secured to the annulus and the arms of the spider are secured to the gauze. The hub of the spider is closed at one end and rests upon the end of the holder, which is pointed to permit the free movement of the table.
A single opening, (1", is formed in the side of the blow-pipe D, to register with any one of the nozzles d. By this means, the head being rotated to bring a nozzle in register with the opening, any desired jet may be obtained, and again the head may be rotated to cut off the supply or jet issuing from the nozzle at any desired time.
The reservoir is supplied with naphtha or equivalent volatile hydrocarbon, and the air issuing from the blow-pipeis preferably passed therethrough, and thoroughly or partially impregnated with the gaseous vapors resulting from contacting with the fluid. For this purpose the cap G is provided with a metal tube, H, to the lower end of which a deflector, H, is secured. The tube projects partially within the deflector, and is closed by a valve, h, secured to one side or depending rim h of the deflector by a spring-arm, 7L2. The valve is larger than the tube, and its center is convexed to more closely fit the tube when forced against the same by any internal pressure,
thereby preventing the fluid being forced out of the tube H. The outer end is provided with a flexible pipe or hose, which may be connected with a suitable source for supplying air, such as bellows, fairblowers, &c., or the mouth of the operator.
The valve h discloses the end of the tube when the current of air is inflowing, but closes it when there is any tendency to back-pressu re.
It also assists in diminishing the air through the fluid.
The upright J, besides bracing the top of the reservoir, prevents any currents or eddying of the fluid. In case the air is not to be passed through the reservoir, the blow-pipe or standard is provided with a lateral branch IOC springing therefrom to which the flexible tube is applied, as indicated by dotted lines, Figs. 2 and 3. By having the tube applied to the under side of the blow-pipe or to the standard spittle is prevented from entering the blow-pipe and causing a spluttering of the flame. The several parts may be adjusted upon the standard to any described level, according to the height of the work and position of the workman.
From the foregoing description and the an 'nexed drawings the operation of the device is manifest, hence a further description is deemed unnecessary. It will be well to mention that by my construction bot-h hands of the workman are free to manipulate the work. The reservoir may be replaced by a solid base, as shown in Fig. 3, and the standard may be solid, if so desired, without departing from thespirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I clalm, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with the standard, of the lamp and blow-pipe independently mounted thereon, and each adj ustably secured there to independently of the other, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, with the-standard, of the lamp, blow-pipe, and work-holderindependently mounted thereon, and each adjustably secured thereto independently of the other, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the standard, of the lamp and'work-holder independently mounted thereon and the revoluble table jour- ALBERT c. FRIESEKE.
