claims. (c1. si-zm This invention relates to bench vises, and more particularly to a vise adapted for use in production work wherein means are provided for actuating the movable jaw so as to leave the hands free to carry out operati-ons upon the work held in the vise.
This application is directed to an improvement over the construction ofthe bench vise disclosed in the copending application of Harold R. Mahoney, Serial No. 486,966, led May 14, 1943, now abandoned.
It is an object of this invention to provide a bench vise including a fixed jaw, a movable jaw, means for adjusting the relative position'of the fixed jaw with relation to the movable jaw, and means operatively associated with said adjusting means whereby the movable jaw may be moved to clamping position with respect to the iixed jaw independently of the said adjusting means.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved form of bench vise including a fixed jaw and movable jaw, a nut and screw, means for adjusting the movable jaw relative to the fixed jaw, and means operatively positioned within a cut-out formed in the said nut and adapted to be actuated from a foot treadle for moving the movable jaw into clamping position with reference to the xed jaw.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved form of bench vise applicable for use in rapid production work and which is vparticularly useful in carrying out short repetitions operations and which includes means for setting a movable jaw of the vise `with relation to the xed jaw thereof and a means for actuating the movable jaw to and from clamping position, and which means is operable from a foot treadle freeing the hands for use in the positioning and opn eration upon the work.
Other objects and advantages of this invention it is believed will be apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in vertical section of the bench vise embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional end view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmental view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention as the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawings there is illustrated a vise which includes a fixed jaw I carried in any suitable manner upon a base 2 upon which there is mounted upon a suitable guideway a movable jaw 3.
A customary adjusting screw 4 is journaled in the movable jaw 3 and is threaded within a nut 5 which is mounted on the base 2 within a guideway 6 in position to engage a stop shoulder 'I to limit the movement of the nut 5 toward the movable jaw 3. The nut is in turn positioned within a cut-out recess 8 formed within the fixed jaw I. The nut 5 is extended through the open bottom of the sleeve which is secured to the movable'jaw 3 andv houses the screw 4.

The cam I0 is mounted within a cam recess Il formed in the structure of the nut 5 so as to leave end shoulders I2 and I3 toward the forward and rearward ends of the nut 5. Secured to the cam shaft 9 is a lever I4. The lever Hl is provided with a plurality of holes i5, any one of which is adapted to receive the bent end of the clamp rod I6, thus providing op- I tional variations of pressures below the jaws.
The clamp rod I6 extends downwardly from the vise and extends through a hole formed in la foot treadle l1. Below the foot treadle l? there is positioned upon the rod I6 a compression spring i8 held in position by means of an adjustment nut I3 and lock nut 20. The lower end of the rod I6 below the foot treadle I'I is threaded and provided with means for securing proper adjustment of the position of the cam eccentric I0 within the cut-out or recess I I of the nut 5.
, The treadle I'l is pivoted to a bracket 2| secured to the frame of the bench 22 upon which the vise is held or positioned. A clamp 23 is secured to the rod I6 and a spring 2li is connected between the clamp 23 and a bracket 25 secured to the bench 22. The spring acts in a direction to move the rod I6 upwardly and thereby rotate the lever I4 in a direction to rotate the cam l?) in a manner that when the cam l0 engages theupper shoulder I2 of the nut 45, the movable jaw 3 is moved away from the xed jaw I to release the work.
Means are provided for locking the lever I4 in such position of adjustment as may be determined by the treadle I'I as is required to hold th'e work clamped between the xed jaw l and the movable jaw 3, which means as herein illustrated includes a ratchet bar 26 which is secured to the bench 22 and extends downwardly to place its ratchet teeth 21 in position to be engaged by a dog 28. The dog 28 is pivoted upon a pivot pin 29 carried by the treadle I1. The dog 28 is spaced outwardly from th'e edge of the treadle Il or in the back part of same and provides a guide section 30 which acts with the edge of the treadle I1 to guide the movement of the treadle Il along the clamp rod 2B. The engaging portion 3l of the vdog 2`8' is offset so that it will engage the ratchet teeth 21.
The screw 4 is customarily provided with an adjustment bar which I remove, leaving only the ball 32 upon the end of the screw. By the use of this ball the screw 4 may be rotated to adjust the position of the movable jaw 3 with relation to the fixed jaw l whereafter operations of the movable jaw are controlled by the foot treadle I'I. The pressing of the foot treadle I1 causes the cam or eccentric lll to engage the rear shoulder Il of th'e cut-out formed in the nut 5 to move the movable jaw 3 backward to clamp the work. As the foot treadle is depressed, the dog 28 engages the teeth 21 of the ratchet bar 26, thereby holding the jaw 3 in clamping position against the work. In order to adjust the position of the eccentric or cam Hl with reference to the cut-out, there is provided upon the rod I6 the lock and adjustment nuts I9 and 2% which determine the normal or starting position of the cam l with relation to the shoulder |I`. Thus by threading the said nuts along the rod le the compression exerted by the spring I8 against the treadle l1 is determined, fixing the position of return of the cam I0 wh'en the treadle is released. When the treadle is released the cam or eccentric I0 engages the upper or iorward'shoulder l 2, thereby moving the movable jaw away from the work permitting the work to bemoved from between the jaws.
Having fully described my invention, it is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the details h'erein set forth, but my invention is of the full scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1.y In a mechanics bench vise, the combination of a relatively fixed jaw, a relatively movable jaw, means on the fixed jaw for guiding the movable jaw toward or from the xed jaw, a rotatable feed screw swiveled in the movable jaw, a nonrotatable nut member on the feed screw slidably mounted with respect to the xed jaw, means for guiding the nut member, the nut member having a cut-out recess formed therein, a cam member mounted within the cut-out recess, a cam shaft carried by the iixed jaw and adapted to rotate the cam, a lever secured to the cam shaft, a treadle, and a rod connecting the lever and the treadle.
2. In a mechanics bench vise, the combination of a relatively fixed jaw, a relatively movable jaw, means on the fixed jaw for guiding the movable jaw, a rotatable feed screw swiveled in the movable jaw, a non-rotatable nut member threaded on the feed screw and slidably mounted on the fixed jaw, means for guiding the slidable nut member, a stop on the fixed jaw for limiting the nut's movement toward the movable jaw, the nut having a cut-out recess, a cam member mounted in the cut-out recess, means for supporting the cam member within the recess, and means operatively connected to said supporting means for rotating the cam member about a fixed axis to move the nut member whereby work may be clamped by the xed and movable jaw or released therefrom dependent upon th'e -direction of rotation of the cam member.
3. In a mechanics vise, the combination of a relatively fixed jaw, a relatively movable jaw, a screw swiveled within the movable jaw, a nonrotatablef nut member threaded upon the screw, means on the fixed jaw for slidably guiding the nut member, and nut member having a cut-out recess formed therein, a cam shaft journaled within the xed jaw, a cam carried by the cam shaft within the cut-out recess of the nut meinber in position to engage shoulders formed at the back end and top of the cut-out recess, an actuating' lever secured to the cam shaft, a treadle, a rod operatively connecting the treadle and the lever, and spring means operatively connected with th'e rod adapted to urge the rod in a direction to rotate the cam in a direction to move the movable jaw away from the fixed jaw.
4. In a mechanics vise, the combination of a relatively fixed jaw, a relatively movable jaw, a rotatable screw swiveled within the movable jaw, a non-rotatable nut member threaded upon the screw, means on the iixed jaw for slidably guiding the nut member, the nut member having a cut-out recess formed therein, a cam shaft journaled within the fixed jaw, a cam carried by the cam shaft within the cut-out recess of the nut member in position to engage the back shoulder and top of the cut-out recess, an actuating lever secured to the cam shaft, a treadle, a rod operatively connecting the treadle and the lever, spring means operatively connected with the rod adapted to urge the rod in a direction to rotate the cam in a direction to move the movable jaw away from the xed jaw, and a pawl and ratchet means operatively associated with the foot treadle for holding the foot treadle in depressed position.
5. In a mechanics bench vise, the combination of a relatively fixed jaw, a relatively movable jaw, means on the xed jaw for guiding the movable jaw toward or from the xed jaw, a rotatablefeed screw swiveled in the movable jaw, a nonrotatable nut member threaded on the feed screw, means on the fixed jaw for slidably guiding the nut member for motion relative thereto co-axially of the screw, a recess in the nut member, a cam in the recess, a shaft rotatably mounted in the xed jaw and secured to the cam, and means for turning the shaft.
