a citizen of the United States, Aresiding at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful improvements in Vises, oflwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vises of the footoperated type, such as shown for example in the application of vWilliam H. Bryan, Jr., Serial No. 508,976, filed October 20th, 1921 (Patent No. 1,417,025, May 23, 1922).
Illt is frequently desirable to have the head of the vise so mounted that it can be turned angularly on its support so as to permit it to be used in various positions of adjustment, and among the improvements embodied in the piesent application is a swivel mounting' for the head so arranged that the head `and connected parts may be turned angularly, while the foot-operated parts remain stationary. @ther changes and im- 'provernents will become apparent upon a further understanding of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 shows an end elevation of a vise embodying my invention.

Figs. 7 and 8 show Vdetail sectional views of the locking means for the swivel head.
Referring in detail-to the accompanying drawings, a bench is shown at 9 and at the front thereof is a vertical post 10. Carried upon the post and bench is a circular flange plate 11 forming a support for a turn-table 12. The turn-table has a stationary jaw 13 and a movable jaw 14, the `latter having a shank 15 slidably fitted in a sleeve or guide n 16 formed integral-with the turn-table and stationary jaw. The bottom of the shank lo` is provided with ratchet teeth 17 for cooperation with a pawl 18, which pawl is pivotally mounted on a transverse pin 19 working in-slots 20V formed in the turn-table 12. .The heel of the plate is weighted so as to insure engagement of the nose of the pawl with the ratchet teeth 17.
Connected also to the pin 19 .is a toggle link 21, the other end of which is pivotally connected with a similar toggle link 22, the latter being pivotally connected to the turntable. These twotoggle links are connected at their adjacent ends lwith a thrust rod 23, which rod has a ball and socket joint 24 connecting it with a short arm 25 on a bell crank lever 26. The ybell crank lever is pivotally mounted, at 2S, upon a bracket`29 liXed to the upper end of the post 10, and at the lower end of the bell crank lever is a forwardly extending arm'30 forming afpedal for operating the bell crank lever. rlhis eX` tension 30 project-s through an opening' in the lowerend of the post 10. The under sideof the extension is provided with `teeth 31 and co-operating with said teeth is a pinion 32 carried on aLv swinging arm 33, which arm is held normally in raised position by a spring k31, so that the pinion engages the teeth 81. kThis pinion is held against turning movement in one direction by means of pawls or dogs 35. The swing ingarrn has a` bifurcated extension 36 at its forward end and forming a treadportionso that the operator may readily depress th'e arm by placing :his foot thereon, whereby to disengage the pinion 32 from the teeth 81.
The bell crank. lever is normally held with 'its extension 30 projecting forwardly by means of a coiled spring 37 connected to the lower end of the bell crank and to the post '10. Aln this position the short arm 25 of the bell crank lever is inclined downwardly and the toggle links 21 and 22 are iiexed so that the pawl 18 4is retracted. in retracted. position, the heel of the pawl engages a. earn lron the turn-table and raises the heel ,of the pawl, thereby disengaging the nose or tooth of the pawl from the ratchet teeth 17. At this time the'v movable jaw of the vise is unlocked. lWhen it is desired to, bring the jaws together .the operator pulls forwardly and downwardly on the extension 30 of the bell crank lever, ,thereby stroking the toggle links vand causing the pawl 18 to ride clear of the cam to engage the ratchet teeth 17 for the purpose of thrusting the sliding shank inwardly the required distance to clamp the jaws tightly against the work.

ing ring ll by means ot a locking ring 39 detachably vfitted to the bottom et the turntable and projecting beneath an internal flange l-O on the supporting ring. T his prevents the turn-table from being accidentally removed Yfrom its supporting ring. For the purpose ot locking the turn-table against turning movement, l provide a 'friction block 4l, as best shown in Figs. T and 8. rllhis block lies within a pocket lf2 in the annulus ci' the supporting ring ll and is adapted to co-operate with the adjacent wall ot the turn-table. A. screw 43 having an operating handle lt-l is provided for clamping the triction block tightly against the turn-table whereby to prevent the latter trom turning. rllhe ball and socket connection 24e between the stationary and movable parts of the device permits the turn-table to be moved angularly 360C without interfering in any way with the operating connections.
Various changes in the construction and arrangement oit the several parts herein shown and described may be employed without departing Jfrom the spirit of my invention as disclosed in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters loatent is:

A bench vise ot the foot-operated type comprising a supporting trame having a stationary ring, a turn-table mounted on the ring, a stationary jaw on the turnstable, a shank slidably mounted on t-he turn-table and carrying a jaw to co-operate with the stationary jaw, said shank being provided with teeth, a movable pawl carried upon the turn-table to engage the teeth on the shank, toggle links connected to the turn-table and to the pawl for actuating the latter, a toot operated device carried on a stationary part oit the trame tor actuating said toggle links and a swivel connection between the tootoperated mechanism and the links permitting the turn-table and associated parts to be rotated.

A bench vise oi the toot-operated-type comprising` a supporting trame havingastationary ring, a turn-table mounted on the ring, a stationary jaw on the turntable, a shank: slidably mounted on the turn-table and carrying a jaw to co-operate with the stationary jaw, said shank being provided with teeth, a movable pawl carried upon the turn-table to engage the teeth on the shank, tog le links connected to the turntable and to the pawl for actuating the latter, a foot-operated device carried on a stationary part ot the trame tor actuating said toggle links, a swivel connection between the toot-operated mechanism and the links permitting the turn-table and associated parts to be rotated, and means for locking the turn-table and stationary ring in any position ot adjustment.

A bench vise of the foot-operated type comprising a supporting 'trame including a stationary ring, a turn-table rotatably mounted on the ring, a stationary aw on the turn-table, a shank slidably mounted on the turn-table and carrying a jaw to co-operate with the stationary jaw, said shank being provided with teeth, a movable pawl carried upon the turn-table to engage the teeth on the shank, toggle links arranged within the turn-table, one of said links being connected to the turn-table and the other connected to the pawl for actuating the latter, a thrust link pivotally connected to said toggle links for operating the latter, a footoperated bell crank mounted upon the stationary part of the frame for operating said thrust link and a ball and socket connection between the toot-operated bell crank and thrust link whereby to permit the turn-table and connected parts to be rotated without interfering with the operating connections for the vise.

A. bench vise of the toot-operated type comprising a trame having` a stationary ring formed with an internal flange, a turn-table rotatably mounted on the ring, a locking ring fastened to the turn-table and extending beneath said flange on the stationary ring, a stationary jaw on the turn-table, a shank slidably mounted on the turn-table and carrying a jaw to co-operate with the stationary jaw, said shank being provided-- with teeth, a pawl slidably mounted within the turn-table for engagement with the teeth on the shank, toggle mechanism carried within the turn-table for actuating the pawl and toot-operated mechanism mounted upon a stationary part ot the Jframe for actuating said toggle mechanism and a connection between the foot-operated mechanism and toggie links permitting the latter to be turned with the turn-table.

A vise comprising a trame having a stationary ring, a turn-table rotatably mounted on the ring, a stationary jaw on the turntable, a shank slidably mounted on the turntable and carrying a aw to co-operate with the stationary jaw, said shank being provided with teeth, a sliding pawl carried by the turn-table for engagement with the teeth on the shank, toggle links carried upon the turn-table tor actuating the pawl, operating mechanism Jfor the 'toggle links mounted upon a stationary part of the frame, connections between said operating mechanism and the toggle links permitting the latter to be turned with the turntable and means to lock the turn-table against turning movement, said means comprising a friction de* vice interposed between the stationary ring and turn-table and means tor clamping the same tightly between the parts.
