This invention relates t'o-'a new-and 'i'mproved scoring device, andmore particularly to adevice ofathischaracter adapted-to serve as avisualannouncement of the relative standing-of individualsor organizations in the accomplishmentof While the deviceis'of-broad application, it may be used, for example, to indicate publicly the relative standing of salesmen as to sales volume,
or the relative standing of organizations or departments in the selling of bonds or of'the procurement of contributions or donations.
The device may be installed in any desired public place for display as an incentive to work-by the various individuals .or' organizations represented;. r
'It is an 'object of the presentinventionEto provide a device of. the character-described whichis adapted to draw the attention of the observer and indicate clearly the information it is desired to disseminate.
It is also an object to provide a device which may be readily altered to show changes in the relative order of the individuals or organizations indicated thereby.
It is a further object to provide a construction which is simple in design and construction and adapted for commercial production and use.
Other and further objects will appear as the description proceeds.
I have shown certain preferred embodiments of my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device,
Figure 2 is a view of the construction of Figure 1 as seen from the right side, with portions broken away,
Figure 3 is a side elevation, partly broken away, showing a support construction,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary section showing the connection between the upper end of the inclined member and the support member,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary section showing the construction of the lower end of the inclined member, and
Figure 6 is a view of Figure 5 as seen from the right.
The construction comprises a support member I l, which may be formed of heavy cardboard or wallboard or similar material. It may be provided with a plurality of small openings l2, by means of which it may be hung on supports against a wall. It will be understood that the member I I may be formed of several units hinged together to facilitate its shipment and handling,
2 clams. (chad-12c) STRUCTURE f AND The i'riclined hr'ember l3 may siniila'rly' be forme'd of'heavy"cardboard or othernstiff sheet material; The face of the member I3 is cutaway as indicated at lid, and thecutaway' portio'ns bent down horizontally =to-=provide a plurality of steps or shelves l5.- The upper edge of: the member 13 istben-t 'rearw'ardIy as shoWnat lBbf Figure 4,
. to' provide a top step "or-shelf i for the ladderlilie inclined member. Theim'ember is'then provided with a verticallyfextending'portion l 1," which may be detachably secured to the support member H as by split paper fasteners or the likelfl. In orderoto givetheinclihed member 13- the requisite stiffnessfits lateral: edges are bent rearwardly 'to Figure :the upper portions oftflanges [a and '2 c: are bnt inwardly ibe'low thel horizontal por- .tionrl Bandisetcured :thereto bythe split fasteners 22. The lower edge of the inclined member [3 is bent under and rearwardly as shown at 23 and has flaps 24 bent upwardly against the inner face of the side flanges l9 and 20 and secured thereto by split fasteners 25.
The step or shelf portions 15 are supported by a center stifiening strip 26, which is provided with slots properly spaced and aligned to receive the step portions. As best shown in Figure 2, the bottom end 21 of the member 26 is cut at an angle to correspond with the lower portion 23 of the inclined member. The upp r portion 28 of member 26 has its rear facecut away on an angle such that it bears against the front face of the support member II to assist in maintaining the inclined member at the correct angle so that the shelves or steps I5 will be horizontal.
A plurality of markers 29 are provided, these being shown as silhouettes or figurines representing a man. These have been shown as marked with the letters A, B and C to indicate the individual or organization represented by each marker. It will be understood that the markers may take other forms and may carry other indicating means as desired for the particular use for which this scoring device is to be put. It will also be apparent that these markers may be readily moved from step to step in accordance with changes in standing or position of the contestants represented by the scoring devices.
In Figure 3, the device has been shown as supported from a special support member rather than hung on hooks or other members from a wall. The special support comprises a base member 30 and a vertical member 3| hingedly connected at 32. The base member 30 is e te d somewhat beyond the lower end of member 3| so as to prevent further clockwise movement of member 3| about the hinge. The vertical member 3| is shown as provided with hooks 33, from which the support member H is hung. The inclined member l3serves as a brace or support and prevents the support 3| from swinging in the counter-clockwise direction when the parts are assembled.
It will be understood that the printed matter or indicating means on the support member and inclined ladder or step structure may be varied to suit the particular purpose for which the scoring device is used. The device also may be made in any desired size. For large installations or exhibition halls, it may be increased in height and width, while for smaller installations, it may be relatively small in size.
It will be apparent from the construction shown and described that the parts are detachably connected and the fastening means shown are such that all parts may be shipped fiat to save shipping and storage space. The various portions may be quickly folded on scored lines and assembled by means of the fastening members when it is desired to use the device.
While I have shown-certain preferred embodiments of my invention, it is capable of variation to meet difiering conditions and requirements and I contemplate such modifications as come within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim: I
1. In combination, a scoring device and a folding standard therefor, the scoring device comprising a vertical support member and an inclined member secured thereto, the standard comprising a vertical member and a horizontal member, said members being hinged together to limit their separation to ninety degrees, the vertical member having means for engaging the upper portion of the support member and the inclined member engaging the horizontal member to hold the parts in erected position.
2. In combination, a scoring device and a folding standard therefor, the scoring device comprising a vertical support member and an inclined member secured thereto, the inclined member having a plurality of cut out portions integrally hinged thereto, said portions being turned to the horizontal position toward-the supporting member, the lateral edges of the inclined member being turned downwardly to stifien the member, upper and lower portions of the inclined member being bent horizontally toward the support member, and tabs on the downtumed edges of the inclined member secured to said horizontally extending portions, the standard Comprising a vertical member and a horizontal member, said 'members' being hinged together to limit their separation to ninety degrees, the vertical member having means for-engaging the upper portion of the support member and the inclined member engaging the horizontal member to hold the parts in erected position.
