Be it known that I, MARTIN PREHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same.
This invention relates to display devices and in particular to devices for advertising goods for sale, particularly goods in package form, and for displaying them on counters and in other conspicuousplaces about a store. The invention contemplates the provision of an improved device of this character which is neat and attractive in appearance, simple and inexpensive in structure, and readily and conveniently assembled for use. To this end, the invention involves the provision of a display device made from a single or integral piece of sheet material, such as heavy paper, cardboard, metal, or the like. The sheet material is cut, and scored, if necessary, in accordance with the invention, to provide, when assembled for use, a body or back portion from which projects an article-supporting shelf having a brace connected at one end to the shelf, at a point remote from the back, and operatively attached at its other end to the back at a point below the shelf. The device in use is appropriately mounted with the back in an upright position, and the shelf then provides a firm support for the article'to be displayed.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated, by way of example, what I now consider to bethe best embodiments of the invention. In this drawing,

Fig. 2 is a plan view of a flat piece of sheet material cut and scored in accordance with the invention to form my improved display device;
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the assembled display device of Fig. 1;

Fig. 5 is a detail view of a modified feature of the construction.

This cutting and scoring of the sheet 6 can be easily effected in one op eration with appropriate dies.
In assembling the device for use, the portion 7 is bent outwardly along the scored line b and at the same time the portion 8 is bent downwardly and outwardly along the scored line 7). The portion. 9 is bent outwardly along the scored line 7)", and the lower end of the portion 8 is placed on the bent-out portion 9. These operations will be clearly understood by reference to Fig. l of the drawing which shows the device assembled.
The portion 7 when the device is assembled for use, provides an article-supporting member or shelf, while the portion 8 pro.- vides a brace for this shelf, being operatively secured between the shelf and the body portion of the device. The article supporting shelf is integrally secured to the body portion or back of the device and extends outwardly from the body portion to provide a flat support for the article to be displayed. The brace 8 is integrally con nected at one end to the shelf 7 and is operatively attached, through the instrumentality of the tongue or projection 9, at its other or lower end to the body portion of the device. 1 I
For supporting certain types of goods, it will be found desirable to have the articlesupporting shelf extend rearwardly of the back portion 6 as well as forwardly thereof. This arrangement can be readily secured by providing the portion 7 with extensions 7 on the other side of the scored line b. mien the article-supporting shelf is folded or bent about the line b the extensions 7 will project rearwardly of the body portion 6, as indicated in F 4 of the drawing, and there is thus provided an article-supporting shelf behind as well as in 'front of the body portion 6 of the device.
If desired, the device may be provided with folded out members 10, cut from the body portion 6, for preventing lateral displacement of the article to be displayed.
As illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawing, the
lower end of the brace 8 may have a narrowed portion or tongue 8 adapted to project through a slit in the body portion 6, and the brace may conveniently be operatively attached to the body portion 6 in this manner, instead of in the manner indicated in Figs. 1, 3 and l.
The device may be supported in any ap propriate manner. Thus, in Figs. 1, 3 and 4, I have shown a supporting leg 11 attached to the rear of the device for supporting the de ice in easel-like fashion. If desired, the device of the invention may be hung on a wall, or supported in a rack, or otherwise suitably supported.
The article-supporting shell. 7 will usually extend outwardly at right angles to the back or base portions 6. However, it is to be understood that the shelf may, if desired, b supported at a different angle with respect to the back. It will, moreover, be understood that the opening in the body portion resulting from the bending outwardly of the shelf 7 may be of chi rent configuration and of greater size, if desired. than the configuration and size of the shell 7.
.As previously mentioned, the display device of the invention can be manufactured from an integral piece Oili sheet material by a single dieing operation. When assembled, the device is strong, steady and artistic and satisfactorily fulfils all the requirements of an advertising and display device. Usually, the body portion of the device will have printedthereon appropriate advertising; matter. This printing may be done before or afterthe dieing operation, since the dieing operation and the elements provid (l thereby in no manner interfere with the printing.
I claim:
1.. A display device comprising sheet material cut and scored to provide inte i i' l tongues extending in opposite directions, one of said tongues being connected with the other tongue intermediate the ends thereof first named tongue is bent at an angle to the and extendine; beyond the connected end or said first named tongue whereby when said plate and the other of said tongues is bent at an angle tothe first named toi'i ue, it will provide a brace between said tongue near its tree end and the plate to hold said first named tongue at substantially right angle to the plate.
2. A display device comprisi planate body portion, an article shelf integrally connected to r tion and projecting therefrom, and a hr integrally connected at one end to said shelf at a point remote from the body portion and extending beyond the shelf at the connected end thereof and operatively attached at its other end to the body portion at a point below the shelf.
3. A display device comprising a com-- planate body portion, an article-supporting shel'l integrally connected to the body portion and projecting there'li'roin, a brace integrally connected one end to said shelf, and "a tongue projecting from the body portion and providing a support for the other end of said brace.
