1 Claim.

1 This invention relates to articles of clothing, and more specifically to new and useful improvements in a hidden waist grip belt suitable for use with trousers, riding breeches, skirts and othergarments requiring support at the waist.

Heretofore, large sums of money have been expended and considerable labor employed to alter ready-to-wear clothing, taking in or letting out garments at the waist,

An object of this invention therefore is to provide a waist grip belt that can be used with garments of the kind specified and will result in a satisfactory fit without the need of waistline alterations.

Another object is to provide a Waist grip belt that will permit adjustment in waist measurements up to about three inches without marring the appearance of the garment when worn.

A further object is to provide an adjustable waist grip belt which when fitted on a garment and adjusted will force the surplus of material to the sides, leaving the front and back portions of the garment smooth and unrufiled in action or repose.

Still another object is to provide a hidden belt which is comfortable to wear and adapted to con form to changes in abdominal size resulting from motion, respiration and exercise.

Briefly, these and other objects are accomplished in one form of the invention by providing an adjustable waist grip belt comprising a threequarter belt member having elastic side elements, and a non-elastic adjusting strap, the threequarter belt member and the adjusting strap having coacting interlocking means that can be adjusted to different waist sizes. Loops and fastening means on the belt and trousers or other waist supported garment are located at definite positions to force to the sides surplus material resulting from diiferences in measurement between the waist of the garment and the adjusted belt.

For further comprehension of the invention; and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

In the accompanying drawing forming a ma terial part of this disclosure:

Figs. 1 and 2 are perspective views of a hidden waist grip belt used in combination with a pair of trousers.

Fig. 3 is a perspective View similar to Fig. 2 with the belt elements unfastened.

Fig. 4 is a front view of a three quarter belt portion of the waist grip belt shown in Figs. 1 to 3.

Fig. 5 is a rear view of shown in Fig. 4.

In the drawings and in the specification, in which like reference numbers designate similar parts, a hidden waist grip belt I I used in association with a pair of trousers l2 and shown in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive embody features of the in vention herein.

The belt II is comprised of a three quarter belt member capable of extending about approximately three fourths of the way around the waist of the trousers, and a non-elastic adjusting strap member l4. 7

The three quarter belt member [3 (see Figs. 4 and 5) is formed with a non-elastic back portion 15 and two elastic side portions l6, one being disposed on each side of the back portion. Three buttonholes are provided in the three quarter belt,

the three quarter belt buttonhole I! being centrally located in the back portion I5 and a buttonhole I! being located in each line of junction or seam l8 joining the back portion to one of the side portions. If it is desired, the back portion l5 can be made in two equal strips with the buttonhole H in. the line of junction of the strips. The free end of each side portion is formed with cutaway corners l9 and is provided with a hook 20.

The non-elastic adjusting strap member l4 (see Fig. 6) has a central buttonhole 2| and a plurality of eyes 22 longitudinally aligned on either side of the buttonhole 2|. Each of the eyes 22 is adapted to coact and interlock with one of the hooks 20 so that an endless belt of adjustable circumference can be formed by detachably hooking each end of the three quarter belt member into one of the aligned eyes on each side of the member strap I4.

If it is so desired, the adjusting strap member M can be made of two straps of equal length joined together with the buttonhole 2! on the about a half inch forward of the side seam and being adapted to admit the elastic side portion it of the three quarter belt member. The location of the loops somewhat forward of theside seams leaves a distance of one-eighth of the waist measurement between each loop and the adjacent side back button 26. The half inch allowance on each side oifsets losses due to present methods in manufacturing and cutting skirts and pants which result in a back waist measurement one inch longer than the front waist measurement, seam allowances being taken from the front portion only,

The belt ll is fitted to the trouserslz and adjusted as follows:

The distance between the butto'nhol'es W in the belt should correspond with the distance between the side back buttons 2% in the trousers. Similarly the distances between the buttonholes l'l and ll in the belt correspond to the distances between the buttons 2 and 23 in the trousers. This fitting is important since it results in a smooth, unwrinkled back waistline. Having thus fitted the appropriate belt and trouser parts, the buttons 23 and 2d are buttoned in the holes ii and I'l respectively with the hooks 2B facing the pants so that they will not cause discomfort to the wearer. The free ends of the three quarter belt member with its cut-away corners 19 are then passed through the loops 2t.

The adjustable strap member is is secured to the pants by buttoning the pants button 25 to the adjustable strap buttonhole 2!. The trousers are now ready to be donned and adjusted. The combination of elasticity in the three quarter belt member and the plurality of available eyes in the adjustable strap member provide ample latitude in fit and stretch, one of the primary objectsof this invention, Each of the hooks 23 is interlocked in the eye 22 that will provide the greatest comfort in action or repose.

Since there can be no relative movement or adjustment between the belt and trousers in the back, the surplus of pants material about the waist over the natural waist measure as fixed by the belt must be taken up elsewhere. Since it is equally desirable that the front of the pants be free of. wrinkles and fit smoothly, the loops, 26 are fitted tightly about the belt to limit relative movementor adjustment between the belt and trousers in front, thus forcing all surplus to the sides, be-

tween the loops and. the sideback buttons whereit will have the, least effect in appearance and comfort.

In the modification or the invention shown in Figs. 8 and 9,.a belt 2! is used in association with a pair of trousers 28.

The belt 27 has a three quarter belt member [3, similar in every respect to the one heretofore described, and two non-elastic adjustable strap members 29. Each strap member 29 is provided with a plurality of eyes 38 longitudinally aligned and is secured to the inside of the trousers at its waist, one on each side of a front fly 3|, The trousers 28 do not have a front center button 25 and are in all other respects similar to the trousers I2 heretofore described.

When the hooks 20 are interlocked with two of the eyes 39, the surplus of material resulting from differences in measurement between the waist of the trousers and the adjusted belt is forced to the sides, leaving the front and rear of the pants neat and flat.

Although the drawings and the description show the three quarter-belt member l3 secured to the trousers l2 and 28 by button and buttonhole-means, and the three quarter belt member secured to the adjustable strap I4 in one case and the straps 29 in the modification by interlocking hooks and eyes it is to be understood that other types of fastenings and attachments can be employed such as buckles, snap fasteners, T and socket fittings, etc.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructionsherein disclosed. and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described m invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is: o

In combination with a pair of trousers having a waist band portion, an adjustable waist grip belt, on the trousers and two trouser loops each disposed on the inside of the waistband portion forward of and near the sides of said trousers, the waist grip belt comprising a three quarter belt member and an adjusting strap member, the three quarter belt member being formed with a non-elastic back portion and two elastic side portions each secured to an end of the said back portion, the free end of each elastic side portion being provided with a locking element, and the adjusting strap member be ing non-elastic and having a plurality of longitudinally aligned cooperating locking elements adapted to coact with the locking elements on said elastic side portion to join the belt members detachably and adjustably, the waistgrip belt be ing disposed about the waist inside the trousers and extending through the trouser loops and being detachably secured to said trousers by fastening elements, one set of fastening elements joining the center of the adjusting strap member to the front ofthe trousers, and additionalfastening elements joining the non-elastic back portion of the three quarter belt to thetrousersat the back near its sides.
