(01. 150-42) This invention relates to ladies hand bags, and aims to provide novel combination carrying or handle means and closure operating means, whereby the person carrying the bag may open or close it with one hand, and whereby the operation of opening or closing the bag is greatly simplified.-

The above broad as well as additional and more specific objects will become apparent in the following description, wherein characters of reference refer to like-numbered parts on the accompanying drawings. It is to be understood that the drawings are intended primarily for the purpose of illustration, and it is therefore neither desired nor intended to limit the invention to the specific details of construction shown excepting insofar as they may be deemed essential to the nvention.

Referring briefly to the drawings,

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral I0 indicates a ladies hand bag which, for the sake of simplicity, is indicated as having merely the front wall I I and the rear wall I2, the

linings, compartments, or pockets which such bags usually possess having been omitted. The bag is shown equipped with the common slide fastener closure'means I4, the grip tab of which is' shown at I3.

Intermediate the boundaries of the front wall I I, a flat ring or annulus I5, provided with prongs I6 adapted to pierce the wall II, is mounted by turning back against the wall the prongs I6 which have been forced through the wall. Prior thereto, however, the rectangular sleeve or guide I! secured in any desired manner against a disc I8, is inserted through the opening I9 of the ring I5, so that itprotrudes beyond the front face of the ring. Thus, when assembled on the wall II, the guide I? and the disc It integral therewith are rotatable within the ring opening iii, the disc I8 providing a wide bearing area for the rotation.

The handle member 253 comprises the upper or grip portion 21 of any desired outline, form, or shape, having depending'from one. end thereof a bar-22 the lower extremity 23 of which is in the form of a straight bar of substantially the same cross-section as the guide I? and is slidably mounted in the said guide. In order to prevent inadvertent withdrawal of the bar 23 from the guide II, lugs or projections 25 may be provided on the bar 23. These projections may be in the form of buttons screwed into the bar after the latter has been passed through the guide II.

The other, or forward, end of the grip member 2i has a depending stub arm 25 to which one end of a chain, or loop of a chain, 26, it attached, the other end of the chain being attached to the tylon tab I3.

With the handle member 2e in the position shown in Fig. 1, the bag is closed and is carried by holding the grip portion 2| in the hand. To open the bag, the handle member 26 is merely swung about the swivel or pivot formed by the guide I! and ring I5, into the position shown in Fig. 2. During this operation the tab I3 is drawn across the top of the bag by the stub arm 25 acting through the chain 26, and the bar 23 freely slides first upward and then downward in its guide II. The bag is closed by reversing the operation.

In the modified form shown in Figs. 6, '7, 8, and 9, in which substantially similar parts to those of the first modification are indicated by the same reference numerals followed by the letter a, the grip portion Zia of the handle member 20a, has at its forward end a loop 25a engaged by the chain loop 26a. The entire handle member 26a, including its lower straight bar portion 23a, is formed of a hollow substantially circular length of material. Instead of the ring I5, however, a plate 21 provided with the opening Isa therethrough, is used, and a backing plate 28 is mounted in back of the front wall I Ia of the bag. The guide IIa may therefore be in the form of a simple yoke, as shown, having the outwardly extending fingers Ill). The operation of this type of construction is similar to that above described,

and obvious.

Obviously, modificationsin form and structure mounted, in said front wall and including a pivotally mounted guide, said lower portion of said arm being slidably mounted in said guide.

2. The bag set forth in claim 1, in which said swivel comprises in addition to said guide, a' plate having an opening therethrough, said guide hav ing a. disc secured against the rear thereof of greater diameter than said opening, said disc being rotatably mounted between said plate and said front wall with said guide vproj ecting through said opening.

3. The bag set forth in claim 1, in which said straight lower portion of said arm has lateral projections thereon near the lower extremity thereof to serve as limit stops to prevent withdrawal of said arm from said guide.

4. In a hand bag havinga front wall and a rear wall and slide fastener closure means therefor, a combination rigid substantially L-shaped handle member and closure operating means comprising a hand grip leg and a substantially right-angular arm depending therefrom, said closure means including a grip tab, means connecting said grip tab with the forward end of said hand grip leg, a swivel mounted in said front wall, the lower end of said arm being secured to said swivel.
