In stoves of the type disclosed, the burners 8 are usually arranged in a single row. The cooking'to'p"v 5 is accordingly constructed as -an'elone` gated I'narrowtop"section, usually of sheet metal? having a depending flange I2 k'around its entire periphery tovvliicl'ithe Alegs e are secured.` The top section' is' `provided with a row oiholes for the burners 8 "'over'fwhich are placed the` usual removable-'grids I3."- A splash plate'orback guard`l Ill in the form'ofa anged sheetmetal panel isv oomnionly.v supplied with the stove. Usu-v ally the' guard visre'movably attached by stove'bolts Il' 'to the fla'm'geL I2 along the rear edge -of the cooking top as sho'wn'in broken lines in FigJ'B.
In carrying out the invention, I vprovidean auxiliary orextension topv adapted to be installed at ctli'e" rear' 'ofthe' Vstove structure flush yvvith'the upper'surface'of'the cooking top 5 therebygreatly increasing the working space available on the top 'of thestove: The Vextension top is prefer'- ,a'b'ly of" sheet metal" construction and as herein short/1'1"y comprises ia flat generally rectangular member I5 having an integral dependinga'nge I6 extending around its entire periphery. Suitably spaced holes are provided in the front and re'ar flanges I 6 so'that the extension top'may "bewemovably 'secured as by the stove bolts I 1 tdfthe cooking .top 5 in'place of the back guard 14j' While thelatt'er may be similarly secured tothe Yrear flange of 'the top member I5. Suitable braces 20`are provided at each end of thetop'memb'er I5 to hold it rigid. The braces are preferably in the form of nat metal straps each having a straight upper leg and an angularly'inclined lower leg. The upper leg is adapted to be secured to the ange I6 at one l side' of the top" member 4and adjacent the rear edge thereof as by stove bolts or the like. The end portion of the lower leg is twisted through an angle of and bent down as indicated at y2 I' to lie 'flush against the stove leg 6. The braces may be'ari'ch'oedV tothe stove legsY in any suitable"rna'riieii as"fo`r examplefby sheet r'metal screws 22.A
The bracesv 2U additionally l'provide pivotal sup- ,pofrtfor 'aswinging'cover 25 adapted to be closed dowrove both the extension top and the cooking top"5""of" the stove." For this. purpose vthe upperlegbf"eacli'brace is extended above the upper surface of the extension top as indicated at 26.
The cover 25, as herein shown, comprises a flat, generally rectangular member of substantially the same width as the extension top I5 and haV- ing an integral ange 21 around its entire periphery. Stove bolts 21' inserted through the flanges 21 at opposite sides of the member and through the extensions 26 of the braces 20 permit the cover to swing between the open and closed positions shown respectively in solid and broken lines in Fig. 1. In the closed position, the top member is substantially horizontal and adapted to lie closely adjacent the cooking top 5 so as to effectually cover the burner grids I3. Moreover, it provides a clear, flat working surface and may conveniently serve as a table. The back guard I4 is adapted to act as a stop for holding the cover in the open position as shown in Fig. 3.
While the extension top and cover structure may be installed at the factory when the stove is initially assembled, it lends itself readily to packaging and shipment as a unit for installation in existing stoves. When supplied as a, unit, it includes the top member l5, the cover member 25, a pair of braces 20 and the necessary screws and bolts. Installation is extremely sim ple as it is only necessary to bolt the top member to the cooking top in place of the back guard lll, the latter in turn being bolted to the rear flange ofthe top member. For securing the braces to the stove legs, small holes may be drilled therein for the accommodation of the screws 22.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the invention provides means whereby the cooking top of a portable kerosene stove may be effectually extended to provide greater working space on the top of the stove. Through the provision of a swinging cover, the top of the stove may be Veffectually closed when not in use, thus enhancing its appearance and providing a clear surface adapted toserve efficiently as a table or the like. The extension top and cover structure is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture. As it is extremely easy to install and lends itself to packaging as a unit, it is particularly well suited for application to existing stoves.
I claim as my invention:
1. An extension top and cover structure for a Vstove having a, body including a generally rectangular cooking tcp, said structure comprising, in combination, a sheet metal top member adapted to ber removably secured to the cooking top along its rear edge, braces secured to opposite sides of said top member and adapted to be anchored to the stove body below the top member to hold the member rigid, said braces having extensions projecting above the upper surface of the top member, e, cover member dimensioned to extend over the top member and the cooking top ofthe stove., and means supporting said cover member on the extensions of said braces for swinging movement between open and closed positions.
2. An extension top and cover structure for a stove having a body including a generally rectangular cooking top with a, back guard removably secured at its rear edge, said structure comprising, in combination, a, rectangular top member of sheet metal adapted to be secured to the cooking topv in place of said back guard, braces secured to opposite sides of the top member adjacent its rear edge and adapted to be anchored d to the stove body below the top member to hold the member rigid, the upper ends of said braces extending above the upper surface of said top member, a cover member dimensioned to extend over said top member and the cooking top of the stove, and means supporting said cover on the extended ends of said braces to swing between an upright open position and a, closed position closely adjacent the cooking top of the stove, said back guard being attached to the rear edge of said cover member and acting as a stop to hold the cover member in the open position.
3. The combination with a stove having a body including a generally rectangular flanged sheet metal cooking top, of an extension top comprising a, flat generally rectangular sheet metal member having an integral flange along its front edge adapted to loe removably secured in face-toface relation t-o the flange at the rear edge of the cooking top, metal straps removably secured to opposite sides of the extension top and to the stove body below the cooking top to hold the extension top rigid, a depending integral flange eX- tending along the rear edge of said member, and a backguard removably secured to said last mentioned flange and projecting upwardly above the surface of the extension top.
4. In a cook stove, in combination, a stove body including supporting means and a top structure extending a substantial distance rearwardly of the supporting means, a, pair of braces extending upwardly from said supporting means along the sides and adjacent the rear edge of said top structure, said braces being rigidly connected to the top structure and projecting above the surface thereof, and a, cover member pivotally supported on the projecting portions of said braces and dimensioned to extend over substantially the entire area of said top structure when in closed position.
