This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a cries-cross back strap for slips and the like.

More particularly, the invention proposes a new and improved back strap for slips, and the like garments, which have brassiere-like sections which are open at the back. It is proposed to so arrange the criss-cross straps of each garment, that they are attached to the front of the brassiere-like section and extend over the shoulders and across at the back. The back ends of the straps are attached to the top corners of the open back of the brassire-like section.

With the new arrangement, the brassiere-like section can not readily slip off of the shoulders. The criss-cross arrangement of the back straps tends to tighten the front of the brassire-like section. The arrangement does not bind the wearer when bending or moving around.

Still further the invention proposes that the straps be adjustable for the convenience of the wearer.

It is contemplated to have the bottom end of the open back of the brassiere-like section overlapped and sewedtogether to form a reinforced strengthened area.

The invention also contemplates a modified form in which the open back of the brassire is adjustable to various widths so as to better suitv designs and types of outer garments. Still further the invention proposes anew and improved back strap for slips and the like garments, as briefly explained, which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.

The new and improved criss-cross back straps for slips and the like garments, in accordance with this invention, is used in combination with a slip l 8 or the like garment, having a brassirelike section it which is open at the back, see Figs. 2 and 5. It is proposedthat the open back of the brassire-like section be arranged so that the bottom portions of the yoke-like sides, forming the rear opening, overlap at the area l2 forming a triangularly shaped reinforced section. This section is secured closed with lines of stitches [4. Above this triangularly reinforced section, the sides of the open back are free to be bent to various positions, and for example, see Figs. 2, 4, and 5. In Fig. 4, the open back is substantially in a fully closed position. In Fig. 2, it is slightly open, and in Fig. 5, it is open to a greater degree.

Shoulder straps It are attached at their front ends ll to the front of said brassiere-like section I I. These shoulder straps l6 are intended to extend over the shoulders. At the back, the shoulder straps [6 cross. Their back ends are attached to the top corners Q8 of the open back of the brassiere-like section ll. Each of the straps H3 is provided with buckles [9, or other arrangements, by which the lengths of the shoulder straps it may be varied.

An important feature of the invention resides in the fact that because the shoulder straps l6 cross in the back, they are readily prevented from slipping off of the shoulders. When it is desired, it is possible to slip the shoulder straps off of the shoulders, and at the same time, it is possible to open the open back of the brassire-like section to various distances; as for example, see Figs. 4

and 5, so as to facilitate removing the garment. Another feature resides in the fact that because the shoulder straps l6 cross at the back, they tend to tighten the front of the brassiere-like section. It should be noticed that the shoulder straps are not binding, and will permit the wearer to bend in all directions.

in Figs. 6 to 8 inclusive, a modified form of the invention has been disclosed which is very similar to the prior form, distinguishing in the fact that a horizontal back strap 22 is associated with the shoulder straps It for limiting the possible extent to Which the open back of the brassiere-like section may open. More specifically, the back strap 22 has loop portions 23, on its ends, through which the shoulder straps l6 pass. A plurality of snap fasteners 24 are mounted along the length of the shoulder straps IS, in the vicinity of the back, of the garment. These snap fasteners 25 cooperate with complementary snap fasteners 25 which are mounted on and within the loops 23.

In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previously shown and like reference numerals identify like parts in each of the several views The advantages and operation of this form of the invention are substantially identical to the prior form. It differs, however, in the fact that the back strap 22 may be placed in various elevated positions, along lengths of the crossed back portions of the shoulder straps 16. The back strap 22 will serve to limit the extent to which each of the backs of brassire-like sections may be opened.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. In combination with a slip or the like garment having a brassiere-like section which is open at the back, straps attached to the front of said brassire-like section for extending over the shoulders and crossing at the back and having their back ends attached to and tangential to the top corners of the open back of said brassiere-like section, and a horizontal back strap having end loops through which the back portions of said straps pass.

2. In combination with a slip or the like garment, having a brassiere-like section which is open at the back, straps attached to the front of said brassiere-like section for extending over the shoulders and crossing at the back and having their back ends attached to the top corners of the open back of said brassire-like section, a horizontal back strap having end loops through which the back portions of said straps pass, and means for securing said back strap in various positions on the back portions of said straps.

In combination with a slip or the like gar ment, having a brassiere-like section which is open at the back, straps attached to the front of said brassiere-like section for extending over the shoulders and crossing at the back and having their back ends attached to the top corners of the open back of said brassiere-like section, a horizontal back strap having end loops through which the back portions of said straps pass, and means for securing said back strap in various positions on the back portions of said straps, comprising fastening elements along the lengths of said first named straps at the back and cooperative with complementary fastening elements upon said horizontal back strap.

4. In combination with a slip or the like garment, having a brassiere-like section which is open at the back, straps attached to the front of said brassire-like section for extending over the shoulders and crossing at the back and having their back ends attached to the top corners of the open back of said brassiere-like section, a horizontal back strap having end loops through which the back portions of said straps pass, and means for securing said back strap in various positions on the back portions of said straps, comprising fastening elements along the lengths of said first named straps at the back and cooperative with complementary fastening elements upon said horizontal back strap, said complementary fastening elements being mounted within said loops.

5. An undergarment having an upper part and a pendant skirt, the upper part comprising right and left sections each providing a coverage for a bust organ at the forward side of the body of the wearer and being connected together to prevent lateral separation of said sections at their front, the rear portions of the sections being disposed in overlapping engagement and stitched together for a minor fraction of their adjacent rear edges and providing a vertical gap at the back with freely separable upper edge portions and extending forwardly and connected to the opposite sections centrally of said bust coverage portion and crossing each other above said upper edge portions, and a cross strap having end loops slidably receiving said shoulder straps below the point of said crossing.
