UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH` D. CARPENTER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES B. RICHARDSON, OF SAME PLACE.
DETACHAELE BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No..242,8v81, dated June 14, 1881. Application tiled April 1, 1881. (No model.)
T o all whom it may concern: Y y
Be it known that I, JOSEPH DCARPENTER, of Providence, in the State ot Rhode lsland, have invented an Improvement in Detachable Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of de tachable buttons where the shoe is hinged to the post, and held in proper position for holdro ing the button or inserting the shoein the button-hole by means of a spring arranged in the shoe; and my invention consists in the` improved con struction of the hinge-joint between the post and shoe.
Figure l represents a central vertical section taken in the line ot' the tint side of the post. Fig. ,2 represents a central vertical section taken in the line ww of Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents an elevation of the head of the butzo ton, with a section of the shoe in the line of the side 'of the post. Fig. 'et represents the head of the button in elevation, with a central section of the post and shoe, as in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 represents a plan View of the inner plate 2 5 ofthe shoe. Fig. 6 represents a section of the same, taken in theI linee z of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 represents a'section taken in the line x m of Fig. 5. Fig. S represents a side elevation of the post- Fig. 9 represents a section of the 3o same, taken in the line m a: of Fig. 8. Fig. l0 represents a plan view ot the spring which serves to operate the shoe.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the head of the button, and B a flat post, provided 3 5 with a transverse slot, b, and either having its end c bent at an angle with the body of the post or otherwise Ina-de square, with a Hatten ed lower surface for the action of the sprin g. The shoe C is provided with an inner plate, D, made with a semi-cylindrical indentation, 4o g, and with the two slotted openings aa, thus forming the tongue d, provided with a curve at its base. An indentation, e, is also made in the plate D to receive the spring E.
The tongue d being passed through the slot b of the post, so that the curved base of the tongue may rest in the slot, and the spring E being arranged in the shoe so as to press against the inclined end c of the post B, then the spring E Will cause the shoe to be held 5e firmly, both in its position for entering the button-hole, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and for holding the button atter insertion, as represented in Figs. 3 and 4, the slotted post B and the tongue d serving as a cheap and efcient means for properly attaching the shoe C. The bottom It ofthe slots a a serve as stops against the side of the post to hold the shoe rmly when in its locking position.
I claim as my invention- In a button, the combination of the post B, provided with a transverse slot, b, with the hingeplate D, provided with the tongue d, adapted to the slot b, and the spring E, arranged to operate upon the flattened lower end of the post, substantially as described.
' JOSEPH D. CARPENTER.
