Description
(ModeL) 0.. B. NEWTON. I Cased Bottle. No. 242,471. Patented June 7,188].
N. PETERS. PhuXo-Liihographnr. Wilhingmn. ILC.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
ORIN E. NEWTON, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
CASED BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,471, dated June '7, 1881.
Application filed April 6, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORIN E. NEWTON, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cased Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
One feature of my invention consists in the combination ofthc bottle and easing when combined substantially as hereinafter described.
Another feature of my invention consists in combining with the said metallic casing an ornamental plating, which is both durable and beautiful.
My invention is applicable to all and every description of cased glass bottles, and it produces an article which is durable and beauti ful. The presence of the glass bottle is absolutely necessary to contain medical or chemical mixtures, and to prevent theliquid within from being affected by the casing. .The casin g protects the bottle from being broken.
The mode in which the metal is laid on enables the metal casin g to be snugly fitted to the bottle, in fact, to fit more closely than it can be made to fit by any other mode, and thus better protects the bottle .by everywhere perfectly and tightly fitting the bottle.
When the casing is plated, as hereinafter described, it presents a beautiful and attractive appearance, and this is particularly the case when the plating is of gold.
The metal which is designed to form the easing consists, at first, of a thin sheet of malleable metal of suitable size. The description of metal ordinarily known as white metal is a suitable kind to be employed for this purpose. This metal is'spun over the glass bottle from the bottom to the top, until the bottleis entirely inclosed. The metal is then plated with the usual foundation-plating, of nickel or silver, and then preferably plated with gold,- presenting, when thus plated, a very fine appearance, and making the bottle thus finished a beautiful ornament.
For the purpose-of illustrating my invention I have selected one description of cased bottle.
Figure 1 represents the exterior of a bottle finished according to my invention, and Fig. 0 2 is a central section through the same; Fig.
3, a section of the top of a bottle, showing a modification; Fig.4, a sectional view, show- (Modch) ingthcarrangementof materials composing the bottle.
A indicates the glass bottle to contain the liquid. This bottle is incased in the metal casing B, which latter is spun onto the glass bottle in the manner heretofore described. This metal casin g entirely incloses the glass bottle up to the mouth, as shown, and at the neck it is provided with a screw-thread onto which the cap 0 may be screwed to close the bottle. This cap may, however, be dispensed with, and a cork or other device be employed to close the mouth of the bottle.
This invention is applicable not only to simple bottles, but also to all devices consisting of a vessel or receptacle for holding liquids and provided with a discharge-orifice-as, for example, atomizers of various descriptioi'is, douches, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. The combination of the glass bottle and the spun metallic casing in one piece, including the bottom and body of ,the bottle, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the glass bottle and spun metallic casing in one piece, including the bottom and body of the bottle, and the ornamental plating, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. The combination of the glass bottle, the spun metallic casing in one piece, including the bottom and body of the bottle, and the ornamental plating upon the base-plate, the latter resting upon the metallic casing and formin g the base for said ornamental plating, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the glass bottle, spun metallic casing in one piece, including the bot tom and body of the bottle, and the metallic neck, substantially as described.
The combination of the glass bottle, the spun metallic casing in one piece, including the bottom and body of the bottle, and the me tallic neck, the foundation-plating, and the ornamental plating, substantially as described.
OBIN E. NEWTON.
