J. POPE CROQUIGNOLE IRON F' iled Feb. 12, 1945 Inventor JssL'e Pops,
Patented Oct. 22, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CROQUIGNOLE IRON Jessie Pope, Ecorse, Mich.
Application February 12, 1945, Serial No. 577,379
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a croquignole iron, more particularly to such an iron adapted to be electrically heated.
A primary object of this invention is-the provision of a crude iron adapted to be utilized by beauticians or the like giving croquignole waves or similar treatments.
An additional object of this invention is the provision of such an iron which will be self-heating, whereby the operator may obviate the necessity of frequently preheating the iron during the beauty treatment.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of such an iron which will retain its constant heat continuously during the operation.
Still another object is the provision of such a device which will be sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other object reside in the combinations of elements, arrangements of parts, and features of construction, all as will be more fully pointed out hereinafter and disclosed in the accompanying drawing, wherein there is shown a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of one form of iron embodying this inventive concept.
Figure 2 is a top plan View of the device disclosed in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially along the line 3--3 of Figure 2, and viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows, and showing the parts in different positions of adjustment.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on th line 4-4 of Figure 1, as viewed in the direction indicated bythe arrows.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Having reference now to the drawing, the iron is comprised broadly of two shanks or levers H) and II, pivotally secured together as by a pivot 12, the lever having an aperture, as at 13, to permit the same to embrace the lever H and extended forwardly on the forward side thereof. The outer portion of lever Ill terminates in a handle member I4 of insulating material or the like, and the inner portion beyond the pivot I2 is comprised of a shank l5, segmental in cross sections, as indicated at l5 (see Fig. 4), adapted to partially surround the cylindrical extremity l 6 of the lever II. The cylindrical member I6 of lever I I is provided with a longitudinally extending bore H, in which is inserted an electrical heating element or coil 18 of any desired construction, which forms a continuation of a cord l9 which is first passed through a channel 29 and then around the pivot pin l2 after insertion through a suitable recess in the handle portion 21 of the lever II. The cord [9 extends from any suitable source of electric current, and may, if desired, be provided with a suitable thermostatic control, not shown, to regulate the temperature of the heating element or coil I8.
In order to assemble the heating element in the bore [1, this bore is preferably provided by drilling a hole from the extreme point of the cylindrical member l6, then inserting the cord Hi from the handle end and fixing the heating element [8 in the bore ll, subsequently the point is plugged or reformed into the pointed shape shown.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved croquignole iron adapted to be continuously and automatically heating at all times, whereby a croquignole wave may be given in materially less time then with the conventional iron of this type. In the particular embodiment of this invention shown, it is desirable that both the members I5 and [6 be of exceptionally heavy construction, a pressure must be exerted on the hair being operated upon with material force and for a material length of time, the heat being such as not to burn the hair during the operation.
Now, from the foregoing, it will be seen that there is herein provided an improved croquignole iron accomplishing all the objects of this invention, and others including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
A croquignole or curling iron comprising a pair of crossed jaw members mounted upon a pivot and having oppositely extending handle portions, one of said crossed jaw members being hollow and provided with an enlarged pear-shaped handle at its opposite end adapted to fit the palm of a hand, the other crossed jaw member being arcuate shaped in cross section and adapted to overlie the full length of the surface of the said hollow member and to extend forwardly thereof in spaced relation beyond the end of the same a considerable distance, the spacing between the jaw members being so tapered as to produce parallelism when the jaws are closed upon a strand 01' curl of hair of average size, an insulating handle of a similar diameter throughout its length at the opposite end of the arcuate member adapted to be grasped by the fingers of a hand, an electric heating element in said hollow member, and an electric conductor cable extending through said enlarged pear-shaped handle connected with said heating element,
JESSIE POPE.
