Application filed m 14, 192s.- Serial at. 651,470.
ToaZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD of Macon and State of 'Illinoisyhave invented certain newand useful Improvements in Rotatable Curling-Iron Handles; and I do hereby declare that'the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of thls specification.
In beauty parlor and hair dressing establishments a particulaar type of an all metal imported marcelling or curling iron is used. The curling iron is made of a particular kind of metal preferred by'the attendants or operators, since it gives better results than domestic irons. The imported all-metal irons are only provided with me al handles which are integral extensions of the crimping members. In using an all metal curling iron of the type described the hand of an attendant using the curling iron very often becomes blistered or calloused due to the heat from the handles and also to the constant regripping of the handles during a hair marcelling operation.
This invention relates more particularly to improved rotatable handles of non-conducting material adapted to be removably mounted on the metal handle bars of an allmetal imported curling iron now extensively used in beauty parlors and the like, said rotatable handles serving as a protection for the hand of an operator and also greatly facilitating the handling of the curling iron when a head of hair is to be curled or marcelled.
It is an object of this invention to provide an all-metal curling iron with rotatable V handles.
, who continuously use the same.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the G. BniNk MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Decatur, inthe county rains.
disclosures in the specification and theac companying drawings.
The invention (in a preferred form) is. illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings:
Figure 1 is a'longitudinalview'of a curling iron embodying the principles of this invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary detail section taken on line 3+3 of Figure 2 showing parts in elevation.
As shown on the drawings:
The reference numeral 1 indicates a round solid metal crimping tong or rod with which a semi-cylindrical crimping member 2 co acts. The crimping members 1 and 2 are pivotally connected one to the other by a pivot stud or pin 3 in the usual manner. Integrally formed on the pivoted ends of the crimping members are the bowed or curved ends of round metalhandle bars a. The ends of the handle bars 4 are threaded as at 5.
Braised or otherwise rigidly secured on each handle bar 4: near the curved portion thereof is a stop shoulder, collar or flange 5. A. rotatable handle or sleeve 6 made oi wood, 7 I
fiber or any other desired material is engaged on each handle bar t and is retained in positionby means of an internally threaded retaining ring or nut 7 which is threaded onto the threaded end 5 of the handle bar. The handles 6 are thus rotatable on the handle bars and ,may be conveniently gripped by the hand of an operator sot-hat the crimping members 1 and 2 may be very readily turned during a marcelling or crimping operation without requiring a constant change of the grip of an operator. The hand of an operator using the improved curling iron is thus protected from the heat conducted to the handlebars 4; from the heated crimping members 1 and 2. The rotating feature of the handles 6 makes the use of the curling iron materially easier and thereby permits the operator to efficiently marcel or crimp a head of hair without subjecting the hand of the operator to burns, blisters or callouses.
I am aware that numerous details of construction ma be varied through a Widerange Without'departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
' I claim as my invention:
'1. A curling or 'marcelling iron compris ing a pair of pivotally connected crimping members, handle bars integral therewith,
to the outside of said step, collars, and retaining membersengaged 'on the outer ends of said handle bars to hold the "sleeve handles in position. 7 V v 2. A curling or marcelling, iron,.comprising a pair of piv'otally connected crimp ng their outer" ends reduced and threaded, stop collars rigidly secured on said handle bars,
retainingmembers engaged in the threaded ends of saidevhandle bars for holding the handles in position, said stop collars, handles and retaining members being of the same diameter. 7
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses V EDWARD G. VBRINKMAN. Witnesses: V Y
CLEMENT O. WALTERS, LAUREN L; SHAW.
