Description

April 23, 1946. M. A. PALOLA 2,399,139
- WIRE TWISTING TOOL Filed Jun s, 1944 Patented Apr. 23, 1946 UNITED ST TES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in wire twisting devices and has particular reference to a tool capable of securing the ends of bailing wire one to the other to form a secure retaining and locking arrangement of the wire about a pair or more of members, such as concrete forms, etc.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a hand operated tool wherein a crank is employed to facilitate the operation of the tool and to accomplish a twisting action of the ends of the wire, and to employ a tool that is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, posi tive in operation, strong and durable.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description:
In the accompanying drawing wherein forthe purpose of illustration is shown the-preferred employment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the preferred form of tool construction in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view. of the wire twisting end of the tool,
Fig. 3 is a similar view disclosing the members secured by a length of wire and disclosing the position of the wire ends in the tool prior to the wire twisting operation, and also the wire after the twisting operation, and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form of the invention.
It is often desirable to secure members together to prevent their displacement, by weaving a strand of wire over said members, and to then secure the ends of the wire one to the other. To accordingly provide a tool that will most effectively twist the ends of the wire strand, I have provided the present simplified device.
' In the accompanying drawing, the numeral 5 indicates the crank of the tool that is equipped at one end with a. hand hold 6, and at its opposite end with an arm 1 having concave end 8. To said arm I rivet or otherwise secure a pair of wire twisting members 9, each member comprising a straight medial portion l and a, rounded end I I, and oppositely disposed outwardly flared portion The wire to be twisted is indicated by the numeral iii, the ends of the wire by the numeral l4, and the members to be secured are indicated by the numeral l5.
In theoperation of the tool the wire to be twisted is first reaved over or encircles the members I with the ends l4 positioned beneath the medial portion of the wire twister and extending.
over one of the flared portions, the opposite end being beneath the opposite medial portion and surface during the rotation of the tool to thus.
accomplish a positive and tight twisting. of the wire as likewise disclosed in Fig. 3. In the twisting operation of the wire the concave end conforms to the contour of the wire and thus will eliminate any danger of a breakage in the wire, which breakage would ordinarily occur if the arm -1 were equipped with a straight or jagged end.
In th'e modified form of the invention, as disclosed in Fig. 4, a straight shank I6 is provided in place of the crank, the construction of the remaining elements in this form being similar to that disclosed in the preferred form of the inven- It is to be understood that the forms of my invention herein shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same and that various changes relative to the shape, size, material and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
A wire twisting tool embodying in its construction, a solid handle having a concave end, a pair of wire gripping members secured to said handle, one of said members positioned on one side of the concave end, the other of said members positioned on the opposite side of the concave end, each of said members comprising a medial portion terminating adjacent one extremity in an outwardly curved portion to provide a bearing surface against work to be tied, each of said members being outwardly flared at the opposite extremity relative to said handle to receive therebetween one end of the wire to be twisted.
