Description

SAFETY RAZOR BLADE SHARPENER Filed May 12, 1945 Patented Jan. 8, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAFETY RAZOR BLADESHARPENEB Raymond G. Bryan, Kansas Cit liana Application May12, 1945, Serial No. 593,428: I 8 Claims. (01.51 213).
My invention relates to a device for holding safety razor blades while sharpening the same.
and one object of the invention is to provide a device of this character whereby a blade may be held at an angle to ensure proper sharpening of the beveled cutting edges thereof while the blade is reciprocated upon the surface of a suitable sharpening agent such, for instance, as a hone; strop, or newspaper.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is so shaped and proportioned as to present the beveled cutting-edges of the blade to the sharpening surface at the proper angle to receive keen cutting edges, thereby acting as a guide in relieving the operator of the necessity of determining such angle when sharpening the blade.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of thischaracter which is simple inconstruction, inexpensive to manufacture and is very efficient for the purpose intended.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be had to the accom panying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the two members constituting the device.
Fig. 2 is an end view showing a double edged razor blade interposed between two members constituting the device. I
Fig. 3 shows the device in position for sharpening one edge of the blade. 7
Fig.4 shows the device in position for sharpening the other edge of the blade.
Figs. 5 and 6 are plan views.
In carrying out the invention I provide a onepiece member 2 comprising a handle 4 and a base 6, which latter is of inverted triangular cross section. The under portion of base 6 has two equal sides 8 and l 0, respectively, which diverge equally from the apex 12 of the triangle to the longitudinal margins of the upper flat surface 14 of the base, which latter provides a support for a double edged razor blade A. The base 6 is of less width than the blade A, and the angle at which the sides 8 and I0 extend from the'apex I2 is such that when base 6 is tilted to the positions shown by Figs. 3 and 4 the beveled portions B and C, respectively, of the blade will be carried into flat contact with the sharpening surface D.
The handle 2 is preferably of the same length as base 6, from the upper central portion of which it extends and is adapted to pass through the usual longitudinal slot in the blade and prevent the same from shifting laterally or longitudinally upon the base 8.
The other member of the device consists of a guard plateJHi having a centrally-disposed Ion gitudinal slot 18 to permit 'it to be lowered over the handle 4 and reston top of the blade A. The guard plate l6 overlaps thesharp edges of the blade'and thus protects the fingers of the operator from being cut when th device is being used. The guard plate I6 is bent upward at oblique anglesinterrnediatexits longitudinal margins 20 to prevent the latter from coming into contact with the sharpening surface D, when the device is tilted to'the positions disclosed'by Figs. 3 and 4, respectively.
"In practice, whenthe beveled edges are to'be sharpened 'the' blade'Ais placed in position upon the upper surface M of the base 6, after which th guard plate I6 is lowered over the'handle 4 until itirests' upon the blade. The handle 4 is then graspedwith thefingers and the device may be'tilted' first to the position shown by Fig. 3 to carry theside 8 of the base 6 and the beveled edge B of the blade into contact with the sharpening surface D preparatory to moving the blade back," and forth" over said sharpening surface. During the sharpening operation the guard plate I6 is held down upon the-blade with the fingers and suillcient pressure is applied to'insure' propersharpening of the blade. After the beveled edge B'has been sharpened the device is tilted to the position shown by Fig. .4 to bring'the side ID of base G'andthe beveled edge C of the blade into sharpening position upon the surfaceD; After the beveled sides B andC have been sharpened; the blade A is removed-from the device and then replaced upon the base 6 in a reverse position preparatory to sharpening the .beveled edges E andF of the blade;
During the sharpening of the left edge of'the blade the devicemay be held at an angle to the forward movement indicated by the arrow Fig. 5, and'when theiright edge is being sharpened the device maybe held at an angle to the forward movement indicatedby the arrow Fig. 6; However, the devicemay be held in other positions during the sharpening operation.- When the'device is moved in a reverse direction to that indicatedby the arrows, the device may be tilted or raised from the sharpening suriace D to prevent the blade'from cutting into said surface.
. 5 Although the fi m, plate jfi is desirable as a:
protection against cuttingth fingers during the sharpening operation, it may be dispensed with as the blade may be held down upon the 'base member 6 with the fingers when grasping the handle 4 without danger of cutting the fingers if the operator exercises due care.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that I have provided a device which is Well adapted for the purpose intended, and while I have shown the preferred form. of such device I reserve all rights to such other forms and mdi-, fications thereof as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. 7
Having thus described my invention, what "I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
