W. Z. W. CHAPMAN.l
Carriage-Curtain Fatenihg.
Patented May 3, 1859.

N- PETERS, PHoTo-umcaRAPHsa. wAhma'roN, n c.
ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WM. Z. IV. CHAPMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FASTENING FOR CURTAINS OF CARRIAGES, 85C.
Specification of Iietters Patent No. 23,821, dated May 3, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Z. W. CHAP- MAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented or devised a new and useful Fastening Applicable to Carriage- Curtains, Cartridge-Boxes, and other Analogous Purposes; and I do herein describe and ascertain my said invention, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l represents a carriage or other post with the knob aiiixed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a cartridge boX with the knob applied thereto; Fig. 3, modification.
My device for fastening curtains and other analogous things is intended to furnish a fastening with'little change from the ordinary modes of fastening and at the same time easily released at the base of the knob as well as at the opposite end and thus be readily fastened and unfastened on either side.
The construction is as follows: The stem of the knob or button is a hollow tube a of metal having a slit in one side forming an opening through which a spring catch b projects. This catch is formed of a spring wire bent into form as clearly seen in the section Fig. l, so as to make an efficient spring. The shank of this spring extends back beyond the hook part within the tube to the base where it is turned outward and forms an eye or thumb piece c by which it is made to retract the hook part at the base of the knob. To this eye c a spring can be attached to release a carriage curtain when the device is so applied (as seen in Fig. l) from t-he inside. In this figure the knob is made to affix to the stationary part and the curtain to hook over it, but the arrangement may be reversed andthe knob be affixed to the curtain. This is seen in the attachment to the cartridge-box Fig. 2. In this case the spring is made to pass through to the outside of the curtain, where there is a catch 0 to work the hooked fastening. Other changes or modifications may be necessary to adapt the fastening to special localities, but a further description is unnecessary as the same general principles prevail. Instead of making the spring of a separate piece it may be cut from the side of the tube as in Fig. 3, or there may be more than one spring catch and produce the same results.
Having thus fully set forth my device what I claim as new and for which I desire Letters Patent is* A curtain knob fastening constructed and arranged substantially as above set forth so as Vto be readily operated from the base or on either side of the curtain as herein de scribed.
In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand.
WM. Z. WV. CHAPMAN. In presence of- JAS. WV. FRASER, IVM. K. HoY'r.
