UNITED STATES PATENT -OFFICE.
SWING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 237,640, dated February 8, 1881. Application filed December 18, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT S. B. THORN- TON, of Peacedale, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Swings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, makinga part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The figure of the drawing is a representation of a perspective View of a swing as made according to my invention.
This invention relates to swings.
The invention consists in a swing of peculiar construction, particularly adapted for use indoors, but which may be attached at any convenient point.
In the drawing hereto annexed, Ais aclamping-frame.
B B are the arms diverging at a a, pivoted to a connecting-rod, O, curved at b b, and terminating in ends 0 c, which turn inward. These arms are braced apart lengthwise the frame by rods D D. These rods D D are connected by a spring, E, which operatesto hold ends 0 c and c 0 together. The lower ends of arms B-have loops e e, and the lower ends of arms B eyes 6.
F F are cords attached to loops 6 eand run through eyes 6 e. To the lower ends, ff, of these cords are attached the ends of a swingseat, I, made in any desired shape.
In use the ends 0 c are to be hooked over any projection, the action of spring E holding them in place. Any weight in seat I pulling on cords F F would tend to draw the lower ends of arms B B together and assist spring E in holding the upper ends in place.
' For house use a door can be opened and the ends 0 c hung over the casing at the top. When thus used a piece of felt or some soft material should be placed under the ends to prevent injury.
What I claim is In a swing, the combination of the arms B B, having ends 0 c turnedinward, cords]? F, and seat I, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name -in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT S. B. THORNTON.
