FREDRIGK' J. SHELDON, OF LONGWOOD, WISCONSIN.
GATE-HANGING.
SPECIFICATION 'forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,697, dated September 27, 1881.
Application filed July 18, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDRIOK J. SHELDON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Longwood, in the county of (ll-ark and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in GateHang ings; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the in= vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to gates, and its object is to furnish a swinging gate that will be selfshutting, will swing both ways, is simple of construction, and of satisfactory operation.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my gate; and Figs. 2 and 3 are views of the swinging device.
A is the gate. It swings between the posts a a, the pivot-post being the longest, and is provided with suitable braces and latch, as shown. To the inside of the pivot-post a is fastened thebracket b. It has arms b and crossbar b which operate to hold the post 0 in position within the bracket. It is also provided with the lugs b, to which are secured the ends of the chain b, as shown.
The bottom of the turning-post c rests upon and is pivoted to the bottom brace of the postframe, and is inclosed near its top by the Secured tolugs on each bracket b, as shown.
side of the bracket is the chain or rope I). It is given one or more turns around the turningpost, and to prevent slipping it is tacked to the back of the turning-post by a nail or some other simple method.
In the operation of the gate, when it is opened the topof the turning-post will be drawn by the chain 1) in the opposite direction to which the gate is swung, while the bottom will remain fixed upon its pivot. The swinging post at will be elevated and inclined toward the latch-post a, so that, according to the laws of gravitation, when the gate is released it will immediately swing back between the posts a a.
Attached to the swinging post d by suitable clamps is the rod 0, bent into a handle at the top, and which, when the gate is open, may be pushed into the ground to hold it in place. It is prevented from sinking too deep by the pins 6 and when not in use is held up out of the way by the pins 6 as shown.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In aswingiug gate, the bracket 1), constructed with arms b cross-bar b and having the chain 1) secured to lugs 1), operating in combination with the post 0, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDRIOK J SHELDON.
