SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,073, dated January 25, 1881. Application led August 11, 1880. (Model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK T. WING, "of Grete, in the county ot' Saline and State ot' Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Backs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a front view, showing the rackbox with one door open and the other closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective View, showing the rackbars extended; and Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of one of the stepped corner-blocks for controlling the position of the bars when extended.

Myinvention has relation to that class of folding clothes-racksin which the arms, when notin use,are containedin an ornamental box adapted to be suspended upon the wall; and it consists in the combination, with an inclosing box or case having hinged doors and rigid stepped corner-blocks with beveled or inclined faces, of two sets of arms or bars hinged upon vertical pintlcs in opposite corners of the box, substantially as hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the annexed drawings, A is a Wooden box, of oblong shape and suitable size, the top A' of which extends somewhat over the front and ends of the body of the box, which is provided with folding doors B B, having a suitable lock or other fastening device. In each of the two front ends or corners of box A is placed a block,

G, cut into a series of steps or notches, c c, with 4o beveled or sloping faces, as will be seen more clearly by reference to Fig. 3. Back of these stepped blocks, in each rear corner of the box,

is pivoted, upon a common pin or staple, (011e on each side,) a set or series of bars, (denoted by D D D,) which may be swung outwardly ont of the box, when the doors are opened, un-

til they strike against their respective steps or stops c of blocks C, thus causing one bar to be set a little back or to one side ot the other on the same side of the box, as shown in Fig.

The box may be made with an ornamental carved bracket-back, E, to give it a neat and attract-ive appearance, and, when closed, may be used as a shelf or mantel-piece for depositing upon it articles of use or ornament.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improvement in clothes racks, the combination ofthe box A, having hinged doors B B, and rigid stepped corner-blocks C, with beveled or inclined faces, and two sets of bars, D, hinged upon vertical pintles in opposite corners of the box, back of the blocks U, as set forth.
