Description

DSC. 26, F. Q FlsCHER WRENCH Filed Feb.v 2e, 1944 HIE? Inventor WWW-vm@ Patented Dec.4 26,` 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WRENCH Friedriech Carl Fischer, De Witt, Nebr. Application February 26, 1944, Serial No. 524,046
1 claim. (c1. :s1-s4) My invention relates to wrenches of the plier type forming the subject matter of my U. S. `Letters Patent No. 2,206,251, dated July 2, 1940, and
.over which the instant invention is designed as an improvement.
The primary object of my instant invention is to provide a wrench of the type featured 'in my patent supra which is strengthened throughout the structure particularly where fulcruming and sliding of parts occur, and arranging the parts so as to avoid interference with the hand operating the wrench.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, 4all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claim are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved wrench in its preferred embodiment,
Figure 2 is a view in edge elevation,
Figure 3 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure l, and
Figure 4 is a similar View taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, my imgenerally, of U shape in cross section whereby it is provided with an outer back web 6. A barlike, toothed' jaw I is fitted into notches 8 formed in the front edges of the plates 4, 5 and is provided with a longitudinal flange 9 fitting between said plates 4, 5 and riveted thereto, as at I0, said jaw l being spaced from the web 6 to provide an opening I between said jaw and said web. The other lever 2 is slidably extended through the space between the cheek plates 4, and outof the aperture I0' so that said levers I, 2 may slide and fulcrum relatively on the inner end of the jaw 'I and flange 9. A toothed jaw II complemental to the jaw 'I extends laterally from the front end of the lever 2 in front of said jaw 1.
A clip-like, elongated member I2 having a barrel portion I3 is mounted .on the rear end portion of the lever 2 with the barrel portion I3 extending along the outer edge of said lever, and with the sides of said member riveted, as at I4, to opposite sides of said lever. A screw shaft I5 is mounted in said barrel portion I3 by means of a fixed guide I6 through which the shaft is turned and whereby the shaft I5 is endwise adjustable in the barrel portion forwardly and rearwardly. A nut I'I threaded onto the shaft I5 forwardly of the guide I6 and Working in a confining notch I8 in said barrel portion I3 provides for manual adjustment of the shaft I5 by the thumb, or finger, of a hand grasping the member I2. Longitudinally extending guide slots, as at I5, are provided in the barrel portion I3 forwardly of the neck I'I and a lateral guide stud 20 extends through the front end of said shaft and into said slots to prevent rotation of the shaft. A link 2I suitably pivotedon the stud 20 at its rear end, has its front end pivoted between the rear corners of the plates 4, 5 by a pin 22 extending transversely through said corners. The pivots of the links 2| are so arranged that when the jaws 1, II are moved into parallel relation, said pivots will be aligned with the axis of the shaft I5 and thus assume dead center relation.
As will be seen, by grasping the member I2 on the handle portion 3, the wrench may be operated plier fashion, to swing and slide the jaw 'I along the lever 2 into clamping relation to the jaw I I substantially parallel thereto to set the jaw for engagement with a nut or the like, and by then adjusting the shaft I5 forwardly, in the manner already described, the jaws l, II may be tightened against the nut, or other object, such adjustment of said'y shaft sliding the cheek plates 4, 5 along the lever 2 with a line of force offset from the fulcrum point, previously described, so that said jaws tend to lock in clamping relation against the nut or other object.
The foregoing will,`it is believed, suice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to 4such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A wrench of the classA described comprising a pair of levers, a toothed lateral jaw on one end of one lever, means to connect said levers together in pivoted sliding relation comprising a pair of opposed laterally spaced cheek plates extending from one end of the other lever and a. bar-like toothed jaw secured between edges of said plates opposite the first-mentioned jaw, the bar-like `jaw forming with the first-mentioned lever and said edges of the cheek plates an aperture, and said other lever slidably extending through the space between said cheek plates and outvof said aperture, a screw shaft, means to mount said shaft in said other lever for manipuing a clip-like, barrel-forming member fixed to said other lever and having said shaft rotatably mounted in the barrel formed thereby for adjustment along said barrel, and slot and pin connections between said barrel and shaft for preventing rotation of the shaft in the barrel.
