To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, l/VILLLAM WHELAN, a subjectof the Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at 2 Moor View, Mutley, Plymouth, Devon, England, mining and marine englneer, have invented'certain Improvements in Adjustable Pipe-Wrenches, (for which I have filed application in Great Britain July 24, 1917, under No. 111,983,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable pipe wrenches, which improvements comprise a means whereby in operation the pipes or the like of various diameters are gripped by the wrench at three points, which three point grip is obtained by the combination with a pair of pivoted jaws, each having a gripping face, of an attachment having a gripping face, one part of which attachment is secured at the point of the pivot, and the other part to one of the jaws.
By such an attachment the wrench can be adjusted so as to utilize the three point grip in respect of an extended range of sizes of pipes, and the like, and can also be adjusted to obtain such three point grip on pipes which are in cramped and awkward positions not readily accessible with ordinary pipe wrenches.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended explanatory sheet of drawings, upon which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the wrench when in position for operating upon an article of small diameter.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1.
- Fig. 3 is a similar elevation of the grip part of the wrench to that of Fig. 1, but illustrating the jaws when operating upon anarticle of larger diameter- Fig. 4 is a similar elevation to Fig. 2,.but illustrating an adjustment of the pivot of the jaws to allow of articles of still larger diameter being gripped.
Fig. 5 is a similar elevation to Fig. 1, but illustrating another position of adjustment of the various parts.
In an embodiment of this invention the wrench is comprised of the two jaws a and 6 having the handle lever extension a and 5 provision being made for the jaws a and Z) to be pivoted together by a bolt or pin d. The jaw b is provided with a perforation for receiving the pin 6, one end of a quadrant attachment f being mounted on the pivot pin d, the other end of the attachment being mounted on the pin 6, in such a manner that the pipe g orthe like illustrated by dotted lines is gripped at three points, viz. a 5 and F, the serrated faces of the jaws a and b being so curved that in combination with 1 against the jaw part b by the milled nute in such a manner that by releasing the nuts (Z and e and sliding the quadrant slots f into various positions, the serrated or gripping face f of the quadrant, the curve of which is eccentric to the slot f ,'may be adjusted in its position in relation to the serrated curves of the jaws a; and b, 1
For adjusting the jaw parts a and b'so as to operate upon pipes or the like of a larger diameter or size, the pivot pin d isinserted in an aperture 6? which is provided in the jaw part6, the quadrant 7" being secured in position by the milled nut d on the pivot pin d at the one end, and the nut e on the pin at the other end as shown in Fig.4,

In cases where it is required to grip the pipe as close tothe outside of the mouth of the jaws a. and b as possible, the pin 6 may i be inserted in the aperture 5 the one end of the quadrant attachment f being then see cured in the position shown by Fig. 5 by the nut 6 the other end being secured'in position by the nut d by the pivot pin d.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A pipe wrench, comprising a pair of levers respectively provided with curved inner and outer gripping jaws, a pivot connecting said levers together, a third gripping element extending across the inner end portions of the jaws and having a curved slot in which the said pivot operates, and a pivot connecting said element to the outer jaw and also operating in the said slot.
