A. BEESKOW 2,333,761 COLLAPSIBLE CHAIR Filed June 30, .1939 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR T'II'ORNEY v fillber This invention. relatesto collapsible chairs. An object of-this inventionis .to provide a chair of the character described, which maybe quickly collapsed into extremely compact form. g V A .furtherpbject of ;.-this invention= is to pro.- vide a collapsible-chair of sthecharacterfdescribed, having simple and improved means ,for adjusting the inclination of the chair back Yet anotherobject-of thisinvention is toprovide achair-of the character described, having a seat frame, and a backframe pivoted .at its lower end to the rear end of itheseat frame, and the rear-endof said seat-frame having pivotally connected thereto, sleeves slidably. receiving certain of the legs, wherebyto facilitate collapsing vthe chair. r
. sun another-objectoff thisinvention is was vide in a chair of the character described, havingfront legs pivoted to the forward. endsof the side portions ofthe seat frame, and aback frame having side portions pivoted to the rear ends of the side portionsof the, sea-t frame, and a rear leg frame comprising side legs pivoted to the upper ends of the front legs, and-received in sleeves pivoted to. the rear. ends .of l the:- side portions oi the seat frame, .the front legs and the side portions of the back frame beingin a common plane, and the side p rtions of; the seat frame and the side portions of the rear leg frame being disposed on opposite sides of the front legs and the side portions of the back frame. i Yet a further 0535 d -th-is invention is to provide. in a chair fjofl. the..characterdescribed, arms pivoted at theirrear ends :to. the side fportions of the back frame, and connectedat' their forward ends by links to the upperf'end'spi the "front legs, said arms overlying the'upper endsofthe rear legs and being supported thereby, andsaidlinks ..permitting theback frame to 'bewadjusted to two-in: clinations, and also permitting jrn'ovement' of the The invention accordingly consists in the features ofconstruction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts tvvhich will be exemplifled in the construction hereinafter described, and

arms to a positionto'clear the rear l'egs when the chairiscollapsed. k g i D I M Still ,a further object of thisinvehtionls to provide in a chair of the character described, stop means on the rear legs to limit rnovernent of the sleeve upwardly on the when chaii is assesses; I
Yet another object of thiswin'vention to provide a strong a'nd 'd'llrable chair: of the character described, which shall be relatively inexpensive' to manufacture; easy to manipulate,Icomfortable in use, and yet practical and efi icientlto a high de-' greeinuse. L 7 I Other objectsof -this inventionwill in partlbe obvious*and-in* parthereinafter pointed out; 1
.FigLlO is a cross-sectional view taken on line m' |u of Fig. 6. Referring now ,in-de'tail. tothe drawings, -H] designates "a chain embodying the invention.
Saidchaircomprises generally a front leg frame I-l,- a-seatf'rame 12, arback frame 13,-a rear leg frame lkand arms [5,; I l
fI hegfront leg, frame ,-I
formedwith notches. on the underside thereof;
The distance between the notches 2.2 and the pivot pins Mbisequel to thedistance between the cross-barii-and. said pivot pins, so that when the'chair is (collapsed, said cross-"bar will fit into 7 saidnotches. q i Fixed to the outer='surfaces, ofdlhe side members [2a of the seat frame -I 2,;adjaoent their rear ends. are a pair of similar, upwardly extending. plates 1-: 1. Pivotedg t is upper e ds o th pl t s of which the scope of application will be indicated I comprisesa pair of up- 7 wardly and rearwardly inclined front legs I lacinterconnected by aztransverse cross-bar l1 atiits horizontal pivot pins or bolts 30, and mounted on the outer ends of said bolts, are blocks 3| of wood disposed, metal brackets 60. The brackets 8|] I I comprise vertical plates 6 l the upper ends whereof are formed with openings to receive the pivot v a pins 20, and sleeve portions 62 extending inwardly or other suitable material, disposed in the planes of said side members l3a, and hence'in the planes of the front legs Ha.
Attached to each block3| I is a sleeve 32 having a top wall 33, a bottom wall 34, and a wall parallel and-spaced from saidn block. .The top and bottom walls 33 and are. attached to the block 3| by screws 36, .The top wall '33 and bottom wall 34 are each formed'with a pair of parallel, transverse, depressed ridges 3|,..
for the purpose hereinafter appearing. V
Passing through the sleeves 32, are the rear legs or side members Ma of the rear leg'frame M. The upper ends of the-rear legs a are pivoted, as at 40; tof'the'upperends of the front legs Ila; The'ridges 31 prevent the edges of the sleeves from scraping the rear legs and facilitate sliding movement of the sleeves on' said legs.
It will be noted that the rear legs Ma are "disposed on theoutside ofthe fro'nt legs I la, whereas, the side members |2a of the seat frame are located on the inside of said front legs.
Attached to the mid portions of the rear legs Ma, are stop'membersAZ adapted to engage'the sleeves 32 to limit upward movement of the sleeves on the rear legs, when seat frame 2 i s in hori V zontal position. The lower ends ofth'e' rear legs I 1421 are interconnected by a cross-bar 4 5, I.
The arms l5 are pivoted to the outer sides of the side members |3a of the back frame |3,' by
The canvas seat and back member'50 maybe attached to the cross-bar l8 at one end, and'to thecross-bar 21 at the other end in any suitable manner. Stitched to the underside of an inter mediate portion 'of the member 50 is a sleeve 5| receiving the cross-bar l9. When the chair is collapsed the sleeves 32 will move downwardly on the rear legs Ma andthe front legs I la will swing toward the rear legs Md. The links 48 permit the arms l5 to swing to a-position alongside the legs 14a.- The front legs ||a move to a position between the rear legs and the side members of the seat.
As the chair is opened up or collapsed, the blocks 3| and the sleeves 32 fixed thereto, pivot about the pivot pins of bolts 30. "The forward ends 3| :1 of the blocks 3| are preferably curved to receive the lower ends of the'front legs'l la,
as'shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings.- I I "Mounted on the pivot'pin 20, and depending therefrom are a pair of similar, symmetrically of said side members In, and disposed therebelow.
Supported by the brackets is a 'footrest member 6 The same comprisesa top frame 65, and a leg frame (pivoted thereto. The
top frame comprises side members 61 inter connected at the rear by a cross-bar 68, and at Cross-bars 68, I2,
the front by a cross-bar 12. may be interconnected by longitudinal slats in bar 13. I
It will now be understood that-the footrest may be mo'ved to variousadjusted positions, the side members '61 of the topframe sliding within the sleeves 62 during such adjustment. When the chair is collapsed the leg frame 66 thereof folds into the" top frame 65, so that the entir footr'est is'alon'g side of the seatframekf It will thus be' 's'een' that there is provided a device in which'theseveral objects of thisfinvention are achieved, and which is welladapted to "meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments j mightibe made of'the above invention, and asfv arious changesrnight be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to beunderstood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to-be interpretedf'as illustrative and "not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my" invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: a
