UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOHN W. BRASURE, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
BURIAL-GASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,802, dated October 5, 1880. Application filed July 20, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern Beit known that I, JOHN \V. BRASURE, of the city and county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Gaskets, ot' which the following is aspecication.
My invention relates to burial-caskets provided with lids having movable sectional panels; and it consists in constructing the movable panel for covering the face and chest ofthe corpse in two parts or sections, the separation being made in a transverse direction, the upper section being hinged to the lid of the casket, so as to swing toward the head of the latter, and the other section being hinged to the upper one by means of a hinged joint, and so arranged that when the parts are folded back the lower section will bear against the head of the casket and form a brace for supporting the upper section, which will then be held in position to serve as a shelf or bracket for holding iowers or other articles appropriate for fuuereal occasions.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and to which reference is herein made, Figure l is a side elevation of a casket provided with my improvement, and showing the sections of the headpanel folded back to form a shelf, the position of said sections when closed being shown by dotted lilies, and Fig. 2 is a plan View of the lid of the casket with the sections of the headpanel closed down.
As represented in the drawings, A is the body or principal part of the casket, and :it may be made of any suitable material and in any preferred form, style, and finish.
The casket is covered by a detachable lid, B, which is provided with an opening for exposing to view the head and chest of a corpse,
and this opening has for a cover a head-panel formed by the sections O and O', the section O being hinged to the lid B by the hinges l) in such manner that in opening it will swing over the head of the casket, and the section O is hinged by the hinges Eto the section O, so that it will fold underneath the latter, as shown in Fig. 1, and its free end will then eu gage with a stop, F, or other suit-able part at the head of the casket, so as to form a brace for suliporting the section O in a position to serve as a shelf or bracket for holding lioi'al or other decorations. When the head-panel is closed (as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l, Iand as shown in Fig. 2) the end of the section O may be locked or otherwise secured to the conjoining end of the stationary panel G.
By hiuging the head-panel to the head of the casket and constructing it to fold, as herein shown and described, the unbecoining delay and confusion incident to the sea-rch for a misplaced detachable head-panel is entirely avoided, the head-panel is utilized for dec0- rative purposes, and the head of the casket is freely accessible to those desiring to view the face of the corpse.
l claim as my invention- The lid B for a burial-casket, provided with a panel composed ofthe sections C and O', hinged to each other and to the lid, as herein shown and described-that is to say, in such manner that the section O will serve as a bracket at the head of the casket and the section O will form a brace for supporting said bracket, as herein speciiied.
