Application May 4, 1942, Serial No. 441,695 J7 Claims. (01. s5-24) This invention relates to a' toy weight scales. An object of this invention isto provide'a toy scales which will not only provide amusementor entertainment but also instruction to children.
Another object of this invention is to provide a toy scales 'of this kind which may be made en tire'ly' out of wood and which may be put to gether or taken apart by achild.- r r A further object of this invention 'is to provide a toy scales of this kind which is simple in con- 1 struction so that it can be sturdily made at'a small cost and will withstandffairl'y rough handling. a f
' A further object of this invention is to provide a toy scales of this kind which can be made attractive by coloring or painting and which embodies a balancing beam or platform formed with sockets to receive weights or blocks which when properly placed will maintain the'ibeam in a "horizontal balanced position.
v To the foregoing objects and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists or the novel construction, combination and arrang-ement of parts as will'be more specifically referred to andfillustrated' in'the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of this invention, but it is-to be understood that changes, variations and modifications maybe resorted to which fall within the scope of the'in- L V.
vention as claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan of a toy scales constructed according to an embodiment of this invention Figure 2 is a detail side elevation of the device partly broken away and in section,
the
'is provided-with beveled side portions ll and beveled front and rear edge portions 52. The base ill has formed in the upper side thereof adjacent the opposite sides thereof sockets l3 in which are received the lower ends of dowels l4 carried by upright standards or platform sup- 3 porting members ll.
There are two of these standards or platform suppor-tingmembers 11 which are disposed'in confronting position and each standard l1 includes a rectangular body #8 formed at the lower portion thereof with a downwardly extending extension it which terminates at the lower ends thereofin feet l5 and [6. Each standard '11 at the upper end portionthereof is formed with a bearing 23 which is connected with'the body 18 by means ofa connecting member 2!. The bearing 23 is formed on the inner sidethereo'f, as shown in Figure 5, with a socket 22*within which a trunnion 23 carried by a platform generally designated as 24 is adapted to rockably engage. The platform 24 comprises an elongated rec'- tan'gular body 25 which has secured t orformed integral therewith in the transverse medianan upstanding lug or block 26 within which the oppositely 'extending trunnions 23 are adapted to be secured in any suitable manner.
' Th trunnioris 23 may be constructed in the form of dowelswh'ich are secured as by gluing or the like within the block 23 and the trunnions 23extend laterally from the opposite end portions of the block 23 for rockable engagement within the sockets 22. 'The platform 24 on the upper side thereof has formed therein a plurality of sockets or recesses 21; 28 and 29 disposed in longitudinally spaced apart'relation and extend ing from one side of the block 26. The platform 24- also has formed 'on the opposite side of the block 26 sockets 30, 3! and 32. A weight member 33 which is ofgenerally cylindrical configuration is adapted to engage in any one of the sockets formed in the platform 24 and the weight 33 at its upper end is formed with a rounded end portion 34, whereas the lower end of the weight member 33 is squared off as at 35 so that the weight 33 will removably engage in the selected socket and stand in upright position withrespect to the upper side of the platform 2a. A second weight member 35 is constructed similar in every detail to the weight member 33, but is substantially longer than the weight member 33. A third weight member 31 which is similar to the two weight members 33 and 36 is adapted to engage in another one of the sockets of the platform 24 and the weight member 31 is longer than the weight member 36. There are two-sets of the weight members 33, 36 and 31 which may be positioned in selected sockets of the platform 24 so that the platform or beam 24 will be disposed in balanced or horizontal position. l a
The weight members are here shown as being disposed with the shortest one innermost and the able in said sockets.
intermediate length weight member 36'next to the short weight member 33 and the long weight member 3? disposed in one of the outermost However, it will be apparent that the sockets.
arrangement, of the weight members may be 1 varied in any manner desired, and unless the weight members on one side of the block 25 are equal in weight to the weight members on the opposite side of the block 26, the platform or beam 24 will-not balance. i
With a weighing scale as hereinbefore de scribed, a child. may use the scales as an educationa-l deviceor as a means of amusement anddue to the factthat the entire device is. constructed out of wood, the device may be easily and cheaply manufactured so that it may be sold at small cost. Furthermore, due to the rugged construction of the device, it will notreadily get out of order or become broken. If desired, the entire device maybe made as a put-together structure which may be assembled by a child, in
'which case, the dowels [4 may frictionally engage in'the sockets or recesses 53. However, if desired,
the dowels M may be glued or otherwise fixedly secured in the sockets lSfso that the device will be maintained in assembled condition."

i. A toy scales comprising a weighing platform, anupstanding block extending transversely of the upper side of said platform, supporting means for said platform, said supporting means and said block including correlated means rockably mounting said platform directly on said supporting means, and a plurality of weight memsaid platform having longitudinally spaced apart sockets means whereby said weight members may be mounted on said platform at selected distances outwardly of said block.
6. A knocked down weight scalesstructure comprising a base, a pair of supports removably mounted thereon, a balance beam directly rockably mounted on said supports, said balance beam having a series of longitudinally spaced apart sockets in the upper surface thereon-and a series of blocks adapted-to be seated in said onpsaid standards, saidplatform formed with longitudinally spaced apart recesses in the upper side thereof, and weight members selectivelyerh .gageable in said latter recesses.
3. A toy scales'comprising a base formed w'ith recesses inthe upper side thereof, a pair of upstanding standards each having a recess in the .lowerend thereof, dowels engaging in the recesses ofsaid base and said standards to hold sockets.
7. In a device of the kind described a base having a pair of sockets in the top thereof, a pair of supports each having a socket in the lower or bottom portion thereof to receive a dowel pin the other. end of said dowel pin adapted to fit within thesocket in said base to thereby hold the support in upright position on said base, a weighing platfornr rockably mounted on said supports by means of trunnions fitted withinsaid pair of topsockets and a series of weights engageable with said platform, said platform having means disposed longitudinally thereof for holding said weights.
