'14 Claims.
This invention relates to shaving devices, and in particular, shaving devices of the type which are commonly known as dry shavers and it has for its objects provision of a dry shaver which may be adjusted for cuttingthe hair closer to or farther away from the 'skin, and the provision of an improved form of guard member for th cutter head of a dry shaver which is arranged to stretch the skin before 'the hairs are sheared.
This application is a continuationin part of Pat ent No.'2,'273,685, dated February 17, 1942, for a Shaving device.
Alldevices of this character made according tothe teachings of the prior art and with which I am familiar have been provided with cutter bars of a given width, length and thickness with no means of adjusting or changing any of the dimensions of the slots. It is very desirable to have adjustable means on the head of a dry shaver to prevent the skin from passing through 2'0 the slots thereby to get cut by the teeth of the cutter. Previous dry shavers necessitated the use of guard members with slot therein of such thickness that the tenderest of skins would not pass therethrough. A man with a medium or heavy heard or with a heavier skin texture was not able to get a close shave with these prior dry shavers because it was necessary to design them .ior the man with the lighter skin texture. No. dry shaver has heretofore been provided for adjusting the dry shaver to th individual skin texture and heard. Likewise, no means have heretofore been provided in a dry shaver for trimming mustaches .and the like, and for generally cutting long strands-of hair.
It is, accordingly, an object of my invention to overcome the above and other defects in electric dry shavers, and it is more particularly an object of my invention .to provide an electric dry shaver which is simple in construction, cheap in cost, easy to operate, easy to adjust, and which has long life and efficient operation.

A pair of secondary guard membersv l6 and I! embrace the guard member I 3. Theslotted and tapered exposed edge 1810f the secondary'guard member l5 overlies a portion'of the slots l5 and the oppositely disposed edge l9 of the secondary guard member I! overlies the opposite portion of the slots I5. The secondary guard members It and I! have slots 20 and 2| for receiving screw members 22 and 23 which are threaded into the guard member [3. The screw member's 22 and 23 secure the secondary guard members l6 and I! in position on the guard member IS. The exposed edges l8 and IQ of the secondary guard members it and l! are adjusted toward and from each other and secured by means of the screws 22 and 23. The teeth-I4 in the cutter member H are preferably formed at approximately twelve degrees from the vertical although this is not necessary to carry out the spirit of the invention. A pairof springs 25 are located one adjacent to each of the screws 2.6v so as to hold the secondary guard members 16 and IT in contact with the guard member l3. The secondary guard members lfifland, I! have the eX posed upper sides thereof preferably arcuateshaped so that they form a longitudinal arcuate portion on the top side thereof when they are in an immediately adjacent position.
It will be apparent that as the secondary guard members It and H are adjusted with their exposed edges closer to or farther away from each other, a lesser or a greater portion of the slots 15 will be covered. The slots in the secondary guard members i5 and H? are in substantial alignment with the slots Id in the guard member. The slots I5 in the guard member l3 may be of a tapered outline, narrower at their end portions than they are at their intermediate portions. Adjustment of the secondary guard members i6 and I1 controls the distance which the skin may be projected into the slots l5 and in thismanner the closeness of the cutting of the devic may be controlled. Graduations 21 as shown in Fig. 9 are provided on the outside of the secondary guard members l6 and I! in order that the secondary guard members may be accurately adjusted a desired amount.
"The cutter head shown in Figs..5,-6 and 7 is similar to that shown in Fig. 1 with the exception that the guard member 3| is disposed longitudinally of the body portion 3!! of the shaver. The guard member M-is of a cylindrical shape and has slots forming cutter bars disposed Widthwise in the upper portion thereof. The
secondary guard members 32 and 33 have their adjacently exposed slotted portions 34 and 35 in substantial alignment with the cutter bars in the guard member 3| as shown in Fig. 2. Cutter member 36 has cutter bars formedat approximately a twelve degree; angle to the vertical and moves under the slotsin the guard member 3|. An oscillatable lever arm 3'! has an end disposed in an aperture 38 in the shank portion '39 of the cutter member 36 and oscillates in a to and fro movement. The oscillatable arm 31 is operated by an electric motor (not shown) in somewhat the same manner asthe arm. 6 shown in Fig. 1. Secondary guard members 32 and 33 have slots I34. into which screw members I35 extend to secure the secondary. guard members Hand 33 in any desired position. -The guard members 3| are removable from the body portion 30 and has inwardly extending pins A0 which fit into apertures. Both of these constructions in Figs. '7 and 8 tend to draw the skin into closer relationship with the cutter bars to permit a closer shave.

Flat spring members" 88' and 10 secured by screw members II and I2 urge the secondary guard members 60' and 61 against the guard member 88 of the shaver at alltimes.
Screw bolts I3 are provided to secure the guard member 88 to the body 14* of the shaver and they are easily accessible to remove the guard member 68 therefrom.
Figs. 16 and 17 show a shaver the same as-that shown in Figs. 4 and 5 with the addition of an attachment for trimming a mustache, sideburns, and the like. A generally U-shaped supportin bar 30 is supported by the head 8i of theshaver by disc members 82 and 83'which-fit over the ends of the head 8| of the shaver. A hand screw 84 is provided-on one side of the U-shaped member 80 to secure it firmly on to the head H. A secondary cutter head 85 is disposed on the outer side of the U-shaped supporting member 80 with a cutter 86 movable internally thereof for cutting long hairs. A spring member 81 urges the teeth of the cutter 88 against the underside of the teeth of the secondary cutter head 85. An L-shaped bar member 88 is connected to the cutter 89 of the electric shaver by means of a pin 90 on the cutter 89 and moves therewith. The slotted portion 9| of the bar member 88 receives the end of the cutter 86 and move the cutter 86 therewith when the cutter 88 of the shaver moves to and fro. The slots in the head 85 of the mustache trimmer are exceptionally wide in order to out long strands of hair. Cover members 92 pivoted at 93 on the body of the shaver ar provided to cover the ends of the shaver head 8| when the trimming attachment is removed from the shaver. These covers prevent hair, dirt and the like from falling to the floor and scattering throughout the room.
In operation, the cutter 89 of the shaver is operated in a normal manner whereupon th to and fro movement thereof is transmitted to the secondary cutter 86 of the mustache trimmer through the bar 88. The teeth of the cutter 86 move in contact with the underside of the teeth in the head 85 of the mustache trimmer. This attached cutter head 85 and cutter 86 may be used for any operation where it is desired to out long strands of hair such as sideburns and the like.
Fig. 21 is a mustache trimming attachment similar to that shown in Figs. 16 and 17 with the exception that the cutter head is disposed laterally of the cutter head of the electric shaver. In this arrangement, a supporting bar I is supported on the ends of the shaver head by means of disc members MI and I02, the securing means being a pivoted bell crank member I03 pivoted on one end of the supporting bar I00 and having a hand screw I04 contacting the supporting bar I00 to firmly secure the supporting bar I00 on the head I of the electric shaver. A secondary shaver head I08 is disposed on the bar I00 to one side of the head I05 or the shaver and a secondary cutter I01 is disposed therein for cutting hairs. slots in the shaver head are exceptionally wide in order that long strands of hair may be cut with case. A spring member I08 urges the teeth of the secondary cutter I01 against the underside of the teeth in the secondary cutter head I06. A movable arm I09 is attached to the cutter IIO of the electric shaver by means of a pin I II and moves to and fro with the cutter IIO of the shaver. The outer end I I2 of the movable bar I09 fits into a slot in th secondary cutter I08 The and moves the secondary cutter I06 to and fro upon movement of the cutter IIO of the shaver.
It willrbe evident from the foregoing that I haveprovid'ed a novel electric shaver which provides simple means for varying the depth to which .the skin extends toward thecutter member through the slots of the guard member, therebyproviding eflicient mean for shaving closer to theskin or farther away as desired and which provides an attachment therefor for trimming a mustache.
Various changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the present invention without departing from the spirit thereof or from the scope of the a pended claims.
What I claimis:
1. In a device of thetype described, a member having a series of slotsarranged widthwise of the member and defining a series ofrelatively thin and narrow cutter bars, and a pair of adjustable guards on said member for covering over the end portions of said slots nearest to the edge of said member.
2. In a device of the type described, in combination, a member having a series of slots defining a series of relatively thin and narrow cutter bars, and secondary guard members on said member having slotted marginal portions coinciding with the slots in said member and movable thereover.
3. A device as set forth in claim 2 wherein the adjacent marginal edges of said secondary guard members are tapered.
4. In a device of the type described, in combination, a member having a series of slots defining a series of combined guards and relatively thin and narrow cutter bars, secondary guard members on said member having adjacent slotted marginal portions and longitudinal arcuate marginal portions at the remote edges thereof.
5. In a device of the type described, in combination, a member having a series of slots defining a series of relatively thin and narrow cutter bars, and secondary guard members having slotted marginal portions tapered in an arcuate form away from the marginal edges thereof and having a further longitudinal arcuate portion adjacent said first arcuate portion.
6. An electrical dry shaver, in combination, a cylindrical head comprising a slotted cylindrical member, adjustable secondary guard members having at their adjacent lateral edges thereof slots to coincide with the slotted portion of said cylindrical head and a cutter member movable internally of the slotted portion of said cylindrical head.
'7. An electrical dry shaver as set forth in claim 6 wherein the teeth of the cutter are disposed at an acute angle with respect to the teeth in the slotted head.
8. In a shaving device, in combination, a slotted guard member, secondary laterally movable guard members having the lateral opposing edges thereof slotted to align with the slots in said guard member, means for adjusting said secondary guard members, and a cutter movable in said guard member.
9. In an electrically operated shaving device as set forth in claim 8 wherein the opposing marginal edges of said shaver are tapered.
10. In an electrically operated shaving device, in combination, a slotted guard member, secondary laterally movable guard members having the lateral opposing edges thereof slotted to coincide with the slots in said guard member, and
means for moving said secondary guard members toward or away from each other in unison. i 11. An electrically operated shaving device, in combination, a slotted guard member, secondary laterally movable guard members on said guard member having lateral opposing edges thereof slotted to coincide with the slots in said guard member, arms extending from the secondary guard members, and a manually operated cam for engaging said arms to rotate said secondary guard members around said guard member 'in unison.
12'. An electrically operated shaving device as set forth in claim 11 wherein spring means are provided for urging said secondary guard mem bers against said guard member.
13. An electrically operated dry shaver, in combination, a slotted guard member, a cutter member engaging the slotted portions of said guard member, a supporting member on said guard member, a secondary slotted guard member carried by said support, a secondary cutter member, a removable notched bar attached to said first mentioned cutter member and movable therewith, said secondary cutter member engaging the notched portion in said bar whereby said cutter moves with said first mentioned cutter member.
.14. A device of the type described, in combination, a slotted guard member, a cutter member engaging the slotted portion of said guard member, a secondary slotted member, a removable support for supporting said secondary guard member on said first-mentioned guard member; and means for transmitting motion from said first-mentioned cutter member to said secondary cutter member.
