I WRENCH REDUCING INSERT Filed Sept. 12,1941 '2 Sheets-Sheet 2 ':F Inventm ==5 i2 gg z z Attorney Patented June. 29, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WRENCH REDUCING INSERT Lloyd Le Bone, Toppenislnwash.
Application September 12, 1941, Serial No. 410,647 1 Claim. (01. 81- 185) This invention relates to inserts for wrenches,
the general object of the invention being to provide tubular members for fitting in the object receiving sockets oi wrenches for reducing the sizes of such sockets so as to make the wrench capable of use for engaging objects of various This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinaiter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a view of a wrench having a socket at each end thereof and this view showing an insert in one of the sockets.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figures -3, i, and 5 are plan views of three diiierent inserts, each, one being of a different size from the others.
Figure 6 is an elevational view of the insert shown in Figure 3.
Figures 7 and 8 are vertical sectional views of the inserts shown in Figures 4 and 5, respectively.
Figure 9 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing an insert 01 a modified form in one of the sockets thereof.
- Figure 10 is a plan view of one of the inserts.
Figure 11 is a plan view of a smaller size insert.
Figure 12 is a view 01 a still smaller insert.
Figure 13 is an elevational view of one of the inserts.
Figure 14 is a section on the line Il-ll oi" Figure 9.
Figure 15 is a similar view but showing the threeinserts.in nestedposition in the socket of the wrench.
In these views the numeral l indicates a wrench having a large socket 3 in one end thereoi and a smaller socket l in the other end therea of, these sockets being of non-circular shape but each insert A has a substantially cylindrical body part but said body part is fluted so that it is not of pre-cylindrical shape and each insert has a flange a at its upper end for engaging the top face of the socketed part of the wrench. Also each insert has two diametrically opposite cormgated springs 5 attached to the body preferably by having the upper end of each spring bent at right angles and engaging a hole in the body as smaller object than that for which a socket oi i the wrench is designed.
each insert is formed with asmall outwardly. extending projection 11' for preventing the insert from passing through the socket of the wrench.
Figures 9 to 15 showmodified forms oi the insert for the wrench I, each insert A having its body of substantially the same shape as that of the insert above described but instead 02 having a flange surrounding the top or the insert As shown I provide a plurality of these inserts which are of different diameters and they are of such diameters that they can be nested to-v gather in the socket of a wrench as shown in Figure 15. These inserts are also provided with the springs 5 for frictionally holding the inserts in the socket of the socket wrench and also for holding the inserts in nested position.
It will be seen that with this invention a wrench can be made to fit a plurality of diflerent size objects and by the arrangement shown in Figures 9 to 15 the insert can be carried in the wrench whenthe wrench is not in use.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A wrench socket comprising a tubular body longitudinally fiuted externally for fitting in a correspondingly shaped aperture in the wrench. an end flange on said body for preventing the socket from slipping through said aperture, and a longitudinally extending leaf spring opposed to the outer side of the body and including a right angled end socketed in said body beneath said flange, the remainder of the spring being detached from the body and of serpentine form longitudinally.
