UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD L. CURIAL, OF ANOKA, MINNESOTA.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,408, dated August 24, 1880.
Application filed April 24, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD LAURENT OURIAL, of Anoka, in the county of Anoka and State of Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys; and it consists in a human or other figure in which a pivoted lever is arranged with one end made in the form of an arm and hand, while the other end projects downward below the heel of the figure a short distance, and being pivoted by a projection in the toe of the figure, so that by pressing upward on the projection below the heel the hand and arm are thrown outward; and also in a second lever pivoted in the back of the figure and made in the form of a tail, and so connected to the first lever that it will be thrown out by its action, substantially as hereinafter set forth.
The toy is made of two metal plates or of a hollow figure out in any desired form, either human or otherwise, though preferably of the former, and connected by rivets or pins, so as to leave a space between the plates.
Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation.
A is a lever inside the figure, and running upward from below the heel at a, where it projects a short distance, and provided at the upper end with a hand and arm, I) 0. Near the lower end of the lever A is short projection (1,
running forward and secured by a pivot, e, in

the toe, so that when the projection a is pressed upward the hand and arm b 0 will be thrown outward until the thumb is upon thenose and the fingers extended, as shown, a rivet at g preventing the lever A going too far. In the rear side of the lever Ais a curved slot, h, adapted to receive the end of a curved lever, t', pivoted at k and extended in the form of a tail, m. By this arrangement, when the lever A is thrown outward the tail in will be thrown downward, and vice versa, the two positions of the levers being shown in dotted and full lines in Fig. 2. By this arrangement the hand I) and tail or will be concealed until forced outward by pressing upon the projection (1, thus suddenly changing the whole appearance of the figure.
What I claim as new is- The combination, with the lever A, pivoted at e in the toe of the figure and provided at I) c with an arm and hand and at h with a curved slot, of a second lever,i m, pivoted at k, and provided with a curved rearend adapted to fit into the curved slot h of the lever A, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD LAURENT (JURIAL.
