TOY DUMP CART R WAGON.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patent- 11 sqepit 48, 11921,
Application filed April 8, 1920. Serial No. 372,140.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES E. GILBERT and ANoRov H. Canteen, citizens of the United States, residing at 293 William St.,
5 Bridgeport, and F'airfield Ave., Bridgeport, .county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Toy Dump Carts or Wagons, of which the following is a Specification.
The present invention provides a novel toy which. is simple in structure, attractive in appearance, and cheap to manufacture, and one which is especially suitable for the amusement of children.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of parts as now to be fully described and hereinafter specifically claimed. I
In the accompanying drawing forming a. part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the novel to Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional view; 25 and Fig. -3 is a side. elevation of a modified form.
The running gear of the toy dump cart 0 wagon of the invention may be of any ordinary or preferred form. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it consists of side strips .10 of metal which are connected by cross strip 11 near the frontof the wagon and by a U-shaped bracket 12 near the rear thereof. The rear wheels and the body of the wagon are pivoted to the arms of U-shaped bracket 12, sides 13 of the body having riveted to them reinforcing strips 14 for'this purpose. The front ends of the side strips are turned upwardly and shaped as shown to provide a support for the seat of the wagon. .the seat there is a second cross strip 15 which connects the front ends of the side strips to each other, and pivoted to the middle oint of cross strip 15 is a U-shaped supporting member 16 for the seat of the wagon. The arms of supporting member 16 extend downwardly and are connected to opposite ends of a cross supporting strip 17 having o downwardly turned cars 18 in which the axle forthe front wheels is pivoted. A tie clamp 19, shaped as shown. is provided, and has its rear end attached to the midlength of'cross stri 1 1 and its front end pivotally attached a to tile midlength of supporting stri 17 by means of a rivet 20. Also attache ,tothe supporting strip, on either side of rivet 20,
Beneath are the inner ends of converging strips 21 the outer ends of which pivotally carry a handle 22. It will be seen that the axle for the front wheels can be turned to any angle without interference from the tie clamp. The tie clamp serves two functions. lit acts as a brace for the seat, as will be apparent, and it carries spaced apart struck-up cars 23 for a purpose to be explained. Converging.
strips 21 carry a shaped bracket 24 the purpose of which will be made apparent.
25 denotes a dumping lever which is pivot'ally attached to thecouter end of the handle as indicated at 26, and 27 denotes a link which is pivoted at its outer end to the dumping lever and at its inner end to bell crank lever 28 the pivot point 29 of which is in shaped bracket 24. A second bell crank lever 30 is pivoted between struck up ears 23. As more clearly shown in Fig. 2, the rearwardly extending arm of hell crank lever 28 and the forwardly extending arm of bell crank lever 30 are adapted for attachment to each other. For this purpose, each of the arms just mentioned'is provided with an elongated, longitudinal slot. A double headed rivet 31 passes loosely through the slots. lit will be apparent that by connecting the bell crank levers in the manner described these levers can be turned to any desired angle with respect to each other. That is, the handle, the front axleand bell crank lever 28 can be turned to any angle with respect to the wagon body without interference from hell crank lever 30. The rear arm of bell crank lever 30 pivotally carries one end of a link 32 the other end of which is pivotally connected to the midlength of a spindle 33. Opposite ends of the spindle pivotally carry the inner ends of toggle arms, denoted by 34:, 35 and 36, respectively. The outer ends of the toggle arms are ivotally attached to opposite sides already been suggested, this will be so no matter what may be the angular positlonof forced upwardly, as willbe obvious. As has eachother. The forwardly wagon body and to force the tail gate to.
swing on its pivot. When the dumping lever is returned to the position of Flg. 1,
the action will be the reverse. As shown,
the body is pivoted to the running gear at a oint to the rear of the middle portion of the body, so that when in the position shown in Fig. 1, the front portion of the body Wlll rest on spindle 33.
In the modified form of Fig. 3, the cart body is pivotedto the running gear as in the preferred structure. A pivoted tall gate 4,]. is provided, and arms 42 are pivoted to the tail gate and to the axle or some art of the running gear. Side strips 43 of t e running gear are inwardly bent to extend toward each other, as indicated at 44, and the inwardly bentportions merge into a handle 45. The side strips are connected to each other and thus braced, by a cross strip having upturned arms 46 which carry a spindle 47 at their upper ends. A bell crank lever 48 is pivotally attached to the midlength of spindle 4:7 and has its lower arm pivotally attached to a link49. The outer end of this .link pivotally carries a dumping lever 50 which is arranged on the upper side of the handle to have sliding movement thereon. For this purpose dumping lever 50 is provided with longitudinal slits 51. .Double headed rivets 52, passing through the slits and the handle, hold the the handle. The outer end of the other arm of bell crank lever 48 is provided with a cross pin 53. At the front of the bottom of the cart body and located near the longitudinal center of said bottom, are two spaced apart sliding brackets 54 which are arranged lengthwise on the body and are parallel to extending arm of the bell crank lever lies between the sliding brackets, and the cross pin has its ends extending into and beneath the brackets, as will be understood. The sliding brackets thus guide the cross pin and limit itsjlongitudinal movement on the bottom of the cart body. 55 denotes a supporting foot forthe cart.
the bell crank lever will be pulled forwardly and the arm which is engaged with the sliding brackets will be elevated to tilt the body,
the cross pin sliding from front to rear of the sliding brackets. As the cart body is dumping lever to ning gear and thebody, and a dum pivoted to the running gear at a point to the rear of its middle, when the dumping lever is returned to the full line position of F ig. 3 the body will rest on spindle 47. When the body is made to tilt as just described, its rear end will move to a point closer to the axle than when the body was in horizontal position, while arms 42 will rotate on the axle. Consequently, the rear end of the body will be moved away from the tail gate. That is, the tail gate will be swung on its pivot and away from the cart body, as it is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
tVhat we desire to claim is: 1. A toy dump cart or wagon, comprising a running gear having a body and a handle pivoted thereto, a tail gate pivoted to the body, a dumping lever pivoted to the handle, toggle arms, and means connecting the toggle arms with the dumping lever, said connecting means including bell crank levers adjacent arms of which are loosely connected so that said levers may have angular movement with respect to each other, whereby said dumping lever may be actuated to tilt said body and throw said tail gate -on its pivot regardless of the relative angular positions of said bell crank levers.
2. In a toy dump cart or wagon, a running gear having a body and a handle pivoted thereto, a tailgate pivoted to the body, a
dumping lever pivoted to the handle, toggle arms, means connecting the toggle arms with tween the body and the tail gate and the running gear, a handle for maneuvering the cart, a dumpinglever thereon and means whereby. the body and tail gate may be moved to dumping position by movement of the dumping lever in the direction of travel of the cart while the cart or wagon is in motion.
4. In a toy dump cart or wagon, a body, a
running gear, steering mechanism, a handle attached to the steering mechanism, dumping mechanism extending between the runin lever carried by the handle and pivota 1y ionnected to the dumping mechanism whereby the body may be moved to dumping position regardless of the angle between the cart and the handle.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
- CHARLES E. GILBERT.
