N-PETERS. PMOTO-LITNOGRAPHER.WASHINGTON D L UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS W. POWELL, OF MEXIA, TEXAS.
SULKY-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,335, dated July 20, 1880,
Application fil ed March 26, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, LOUIS WHITFIELD POWELL, ot' Mexia, in the county of Limestone and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sulky-Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of hangers, braces, and levers, whereby provision is made for the attachment of plow-beamsof different sizes, and for adjusting the parts, as hereinafter described. 7
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2 a side view, and Fig. 3 a front view, of a machine embodying my improvements. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the axle and rear hangers.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A represents the axle, and B B the wheels. A vertical slot runs longitudinally mid-length of the axle A. and in this slot work the shanks of two hangers, each of which is composed of a vertical bar, 0, and a diagonal brace, D, with their lower ends riveted together. Their upper ends are provided with screw-shanks, which pass through the slot in the axle and are fastened by nuts, by which means the hangers may be adjusted nearer to or farther from each other in order to accommodate plowbeams of different thicknesses.
E E represent two diagonal braces running from the lower ends of the hangers O D upward and forward to a transverse beam, F, to which the braces are fastened by screwbolts working in a slot in said beam, so that they may be adjusted laterally to correspond with the lateral adjustment of the hangers. The beam F is attached to the hounds 5 5 by bolts passed through the slot and through holes G G in the hounds.
Two hangers, H I H I, of the same construction as the hangers O D, above described, are connected with the beam F, in the same manner as the rear hangers are connected to the axle, namely, by means of nuts and screw- (No model.)
shanks working in the slot of the beam, so that they may be adjusted laterally.
K K represent two diagonal braces, connecting the lower ends of the hangers H I with the axle A, and fastened in the same manner as the hangers O D, so that they may be adjusted laterally.
L represents a plow-beam, and illustrates the manner of attaching any ordinary beam. The beam L works between the hangers O D G D'and H IH I, and is hung in the former by means of a bolt passing through the parts 0 U, the height of which bolt, and consequently ot' the beam, is regulated by different sets of holes.
The front end of the beam L is prevented from rising high enough to throw the plow out of the ground by means of a bolt, 1, passing through the parts H H above the beam, and this bolt is also adjustable to different heights by means of different sets of holes.
M is a hand-lever arranged within reach of the seat 0, and having its rear end connected by a chain, m, with the rear end of the plowbeam,bywhicl1 means the driver is enabled to raise the plow out of the ground. at pleasure.
N N represent a wheel-cleaning device, consisting of two levers pivoted on the hounds and connected by a rod or link with a lever, P, which may be worked by either hand or foot. The outer ends of the levers N are provided with scrapers, which may be thrown into contact with the edges of the wheels in order to clean them.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I The combination of the slotted axle A, adjustable hangers O D, and diagonal braces E, with the slotted beam F, adjustable hangers H I, and braces K, adapted for the attachment of beams of various sizes, as described.
LOUIS WHITFIELD POWELL.
