CRUSHER Filed March 19, 1941 Y &INV ENTOR.
Patented Jan. 6, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CRUSHER Thomas F. Davis, Wyandotte, Mich. Application March 19, 1941, Serial, No. 384,137
1 Claim.
This application relates to crushing tools such as are shown in prior Patent No. 2,174,080 of September 26, 1939, and discloses an improved form of such crushing tool.
An understanding of the improved form herein disclosed may be obtained by reference to the specification which follows which refers to the append-ed drawing.
In this drawing,
Fig. 1 is an elevation view of the crushing tool.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of a detail thereof.
The crushing tool hereof comprises a base at whose ends are pins ll mounting the lower ends of upwardly projecting posts l2, surmounted by and connected by an upper cross plate I4. Adjustably positioned on and connecting these posts is a lower cross plate l5 having holes at its ends receiving the posts l2. Depending from a central point of the lower cross plate l5, below the base 10, and formed with serrations I6, is a post l1. Pivotally mounted at points I8 of the base III are depending handles 19. Gripping links 20 between the depending post I! and the handles I9 each have an end pivotally connected at 2| to a handle l9 and another end 22 releasably disposed in a serration of the depending post I], with the handle ends of each link constantly below the post engaging ends of the link. Springs 23, coiled around the pins 2|, bias the links 20 v to pivot on their handle connected ends 2| towards the depending post IT, to dispose the ends 22 of the links in serrations of such posts, so that normal movement of the handles l 9 towards each other causes the links 20 to push the depending post I1 and the lower cross plate l5 upwardly towards the upper cross plate I l, for crushing an object disposed between the cross plates.
For initially setting the lower cross plate l5 to accommodate itself to various size objects, it is merely necessary to move the handles H to- Wards each other as far as possible, so that lugs 24 of the links interengage and move the upper ends of the links away from each other, so that such ends fall out of serrations of the post, whereupon the post I! and the lower cross plate may be moved upwardly or downwardly, free of the links and handles.
- I claim:
A crushing tool comprising a base, two posts projecting upwardly therefrom and mounted, at their lower ends, on the ends of the base, an upper cross plate fixed to and connecting the upper ends of the posts, a, lower cross plate having holes at its ends through which pass the posts, these slidably mounting such plate thereon, a post depending from a central point of such lower cross plate below the base, and formed with serrations, handles pivotally mounted at their upper ends on the base on opposite sides of the depending post but between the ends of the base, gripping links between the depending post and the handles, each having an end pivotally connected to a handle and another end releasably disposed in a serration of the depending post, with the handle end of each link constantly below the post engaging end thereof, and springs for biasing the links to pivot on their handle connected ends towards the depending post, whereby normal movement of the handles towards each other causes the links to push the depending post and lower cross plate upwardly towards the upper cross plate for crushing an object between them, the links having facing lugs between their ends positioned to engage when the handles are moved towards each other beyond their normal movement, to swing the links away from and free of the post, so that the latter may be moved free of the links and handles.
