987,726. Jointing by stamping. HAYDEN-NILOS Ltd. March 19, 1964 [March 9, 1963], No. 14017/63. Heading B3Q. A die-set for contracting a metal band 23 around a hose for securing the hose to a coupling &c. comprises a pair of dies 18 each having a semicircular recess 19 and an extension 20, 21 on at least one side of the recess, the extensions extending the enclosing limits of the dies and overlapping each other when the dies are closed. As shown, Fig. 2, an extension lip 20 on one die engages a slot 22 in the other die. The dies are bolted to jaws 1 which are mounted on pivots 2 in a frame 3 and are interconnected by links 5. A pin 6 passing through the inner ends of the links is guided in slots 7 in the frame 3. Operating handles 11 are secured to the links 5. The dies may be located by a plate 29 in a bench-tool, Fig. 5, the upper die being carried by a jaw 1 on a pivot 31. Toggle-links 5 connect the free-end of the jaw 1 to an upper pivot 32, and an operating arm 11 is secured to the top link 5. The arm 11 may raise the jaw 1 until the jaw-pivots and the lower pivot on the top link 5 are in a straight line. If the jaw is raised further, into the position depicted in broken lines, it will hold itself open. A bracket 33 may indicate the correct position for the hose. In a further form of portable tool, Figs. 7 and 8, which may also be used on a bench, each die is in two parts 44 held in the jaw-openings 4 by springs 48 engaging pegs 49. The parts 44 have overlapping extensions 20, 21, and the top-jaw 1 is turned about a pivot 38 by a cam or eccentric 42 on a handle 11 which pivots in links 5. As the dies are closed they turn in the jaw-openings 4, against the bias of the springs 48, into the position depicted in Fig. 6 (not shown). Flanges 45 locate the dies endwise. The dies may also be used in a press, Figs. 9-12 (not shown).
