IRON
PILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 226,237, dated April 6, 1880,
' Application filed January 24, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC W. MACLAY, of Metuchen, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Iron Piles, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to prevent water rising through the bottom of iron tubular piles after being sunk by the waterjet process and lessen the corrosion of the inner surface of the piles. This I accomplish by closing the bottom of the pile, after it is placed in position, by the use of an iron plug or stopper of nearly the same diameter as the interior of the pile, fitted or shaped to partly enter and rest in the conical opening of the disk or shoe at the base of the pile.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a cross-section 20 of the pile A, the shoe B, and stopper G. Fig. 2 is a View of the same.
The stopper G is lowered through the hollow pile by means of an attachment to the ears g g of the stopper until it rests at the foot of 25 the pile, where it is secured by concrete or cementinserted in the pile.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the iron plug with the tubular iron pile, substantially as described, 30 for closing the aperture at the bottom of the pile, as and for the purpose set forth.
I. W. MAOLAY.
