Patented Oct. 7, i941 UNITED vsierras PATENT' OFFICE srooL Von REEL Robert V. Olson,` Attleboro, Mass.,'. assignorto Mossberg Pressed Steel Corporation, a, corporation of Massachusetts Application February 17,1938. serial No. 190,894
12 ciaims'. (ci. 242-123),
This invention relates to a spool or reel of the type formed of sheetI stock; and has for one of its objects the provision of a spool or reel which will have an unusually strong head so that when joint at the corner where there usually exists a seam between the inner surface of the head and the outer surface of -the barrel.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a spool having all of its parts welded together that a rigid and strong structure may be provided.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a structure which will so support the stresses as to remain concentric whereby to permit of high speed drawing 4without wobbling or chattering of the spool on its supports.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a sectional view through the new spool of this invention;
Fig, 2 is an exploded view of theseveral partsA which go to make up one of the heads of the spool; i
Fig. 3 is a fragmental end view of thekhead of the spool;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the parts shown in:
Fig. 2 in assembled relation and on a much larger scale than shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 isa sectional view of a modified form of y. ,fs'pool embodying the thoughts of this invention.
stresses to be exerted on the head of the spoolI and often a warping of the head of the spool;
.and in order that a wire may be drawn at high speeds it is essential that the spool be accurate and concentricwith the center hole, and acmovingJ beyond the tolerances allowed for high speed production; and the following `is a more copper wire is reeled upon the spool and heated 5 detailed description of the present embodiment for annealing which provides considerable more A of this invention, illustrating the preferred expansion of copper wire because of its different means by which these advantageous results may co-eficient of expansion than the steel of the be accomplished.: V spool, the strains exerted will be resisted and With reference to the drawing, I0 designates the heads will maintain their shape in planes at l0 the barrel of the spool and II the head which right angles to the axis of. the body of the is provided from a plateportion l2 having acenbarrel.` I tral hole with a flange I3 extending inwardly Another object of the invention is the proviabout this hole and of a size to abut the end of sion of a spool' having the desired strength in the the barrel II). The outer portion of this plate is head and yet one which will have a seamless 15 rolled as at I4 to strengthen the edge thereof.
' A strengtheningplate I5 is also provided with a ternal flange 2|.
central hole and has a flange I6 extending inwardly about this central hole which is of an external diameter to. snugly fit the internal wall I1 of the barrel and is of a length to extend inwardly across the joint I8 formed by the abutting end of the iiange I3 and the end of the barrel I0. An outer plate I9 centrally embossed as at 20 abuts the surface of the plate I5 and is provided with a central opening having an in- A central tube 22 extends through the opening in the plate I9 and is provided with raised portions 23 which abut the end of the flange 2| while the end of the tube 22 is rolled outwardly as at 24 to extend over. the outer portion of the plate adjacent its central opening to tie the outer plate firmly against the inner plate I5 and both plates against the heads of the spool.
The plates I5 and I9 extend outwardly along the head a major portion of its distance from the center opening in the head and are spot welded as at 25, 26 to each other and to the head so as to firmly secure these parts in this assembled relation and .prevent any sliding movement of theparts one on the other, such asmight tend to -occur were the head to be A forced outwardly from its right angular position with the barrel. There is also a weld 28, 29 similar to the Weld 25.y 25 performed at the joint I8 which secures the abutted ends of the barrel I0 andthe flange I3 together as at 28 and both to the ange I6 as at 29 that a very strong connection of joint may be had at this location.
By reason of the curved portion of the stock forming the flange I3 a closed joint is formed between the head and the barrel at the right angular meeting of the inner surface of the head cordingly I have'sconstructed a spool thatthe 55 and the outer surface of the barrel which is ofv Kadvantage in thatit prevents wire from catch- 2l on the outer plate.
ing in the crevice, thus, sometimes formed and also is of advantage in strengthening the struc-- lalong the tube 22 while instead of providing abutments 23 on the tube 22 I cause this portion 3l to provide. the abutments to engage the end 32 of a slightly further inwardly extended iange This modified form by which the tube 22 is better supported is otherwise the same as shown in the previous Figures l to 4 and similarly welded.
'I have referred to the fastening means between the parts as welded and by this term I wish to include the equivalent process and means sometimes `called .brazing or any means for uniting the parts that they will not relatively move.
The vforegoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limitedonly by the terms of the appended claims.
