Claims.
of locks positioned along the lower side edges' of the lid and having bolts which project beyond the side edges of the lid to interengage keepers on the side edges of the rear deck opening. This type of latch draws the lower or'rear portion of the deck lid inwardly toward the deck but not downwardly and because of this often places the lid under lengthwise compression whichv causes it to wrinkle or buckle slightly. This disadvantage could be eliminated by making the deck lid of heavier gauge sheet steel. However, it is the object of this invention to produce a deck lid lock which will obviate the above-mentioned disadvantage and lock th lid without causing wrinkling regardless of the gauge of the sheet metal lid. This object has been achieved by means of deck lid is placed under tension'or stressed longitudinally of the lid in a direction away from the hinges and there is no tendency of the latch it), one end of which is'pi'votally connected with the rollback 8 in the opening ii and the other end or which is pivotallyconnected with the bolt 3 8 in the opening 12.
The bolt 9 is provided with a head portion I8 and an arcuate body portion l4 which slidably interengages a correspondingly arcuate guide I5.
As shown, particularly in Fig. 2, the arcuate body portion of the bolt l4 takes the form of a-channel "section which is slidably telescoped within the arcuate guide I! also of channel section. The

Referring more particularly to the drawings there is shown a deck lid I for closing the opentioned on opposite sides of the bolt. This flanged bracket I9 effectively prevents access to the bolt by means of a tire iron or other tool which might be inserted between the lower edge 22 of the deck lid and the gutter 28.
The lock is shown in locked position in the full lines, Figs. 1 and 2. It should be noted that in the. locked position (Fig. 2) the rollback 8 is slightly over center and the side edge 24 of the rollback abuts the adjacent side wall 25 of the guide '5 to prevent further counterclockwise rotation oi the rollback8. In this position the bolt 9 cooperates with the keeper It to pull the'deck liddownwardly and thereby stress the same longitudinally. I
To release the bolt the handle 3 is turned to rotate the rollback 8 clockwise to the dotted line ing in the deck- 2 of an automobile body. The
deck lid l is hinged along its upper edge in the conventional manner. v
The deck lid is provided with the usual handle 8 fixed on the spindle 4 which is journalled in the die-cast housing 6 fixed to the deck lid.
The inner end of the spindle 4 is also rotatably supported in the bracket 8 which is fixed to the inside panel I of the deck lid. .A rollback in,the form of a crank 8 is fixed on the inner end of the spindle 4. The outer end of the rollback 8 is connected to the bolt 9 by a connecting rod position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The rollback 8 acting through the connecting rod l0 pushes the bolt 8 downwardly and as th bolt slides in the arcuate guide II, the, arcuate guide directs the bolt downwardly and outwardly in an arcuate path to disengage the same from the keeper l8.
Further rotation of the handle 3 will slide the bolt 9 downward and outwardly to a position beyond the dotted line position whereby the deck lid will-be freed to be opened. It is to be understood that the radius of arcuate guide I5 and the relative size and position of the parts is such that when the bolt 9 is fully extended (not shown) the parts will not interfere with each .bolt head 13 interengages keeper l6 whereupon further counterclockwise rotation of the rollback Q8 draws the deck lid downwardly and inwardly toward the deck.
In Figs. 3 to a modified form of the invention Iisshown in which the deck lid l carries a set .of locks 30 and 3| positioned along the lower bottom edge of the deck lid on opposite sides of center. the principal form of lock described above except that the connectingrod I0 is operated by acrank 32 which is journalled in ears 33 and 34 .struck out of the arcuate guide [5. The inner end 0f the deck lid handle spindle l is rotatably supported in the bracket 36. A crank 39 is fixed to Ythe inner end of the spindle 4. A bracket 40 is pivotally mounted on the crank 39 and inter- 1 slot 42. The mounting of the rod 35 on the bracket 36, the configuration of the crank 4| and its connections 40 and 39 with the deck lid handle j 3 are identical with those shown in the Rhein and Cooley Patent 2,135,625, to which reference may be had if further details of the same are desired.
As shown in the full lines, Figs. 3 to 5, the deck lid is locked. At this time the bolts 9 are interengaged with their respective-keepers l6 and a ,the cranks 32 have been swung clockwise, Fig. 4.

3. In an automobile having a deck member provided with an opening and a hinged lid member for closing the said opening, a lock mounted on one of said members opposite the hinged edge of said lid comprising in combination a longitudinally arcuate bolt having a bolt head in the form of a hook, a correspondingly arcuate guide for slidably supporting the said bolt, a crank, a' link connecting the bolt and crank whereby turning of said crank slides thebolt, said bolt, head being adapted to engage a keeper in the form of a hook carried by the other of said members whereby when the bolt is slid into interengagement with its keeper it travels along an arcuate path and draws the deck lid inwardly toward the deck and stresses the same longitudinally toward said keeper to prevent wrinkling of the lid.
4. In an automobile having a deck memberprovided with an opening and a hinged lid member for closing the said opening, a lock mounted on one of said members opposite the hinged edge of said lid comprising in combination a longi tudinally arcuate bolt having a bolt head in the form of a hook, a correspondingly arcuate guide Weatherstrip, the deck lid I, prior to latching, will not close completely. In such case the latch gbolt l3 will engage the keeper l6 and draw the deck lid downwardly and inwardly to closed poj sition. Thus one of the advantages of this lock 1 is that if the deck lid is not completely closed before latching, then the latch bolt 9 will coop erate with the keeper IE to draw the deck lid 1 closed.
I claim:
l. ,A look comprising in combination a bolt curved longitudinally and provided with a hooked end, a correspondingly longitudinally curved 1 guide for slidably supporting the bolt, the said bolt having an elongated slot, a rotatable handle spindle projecting through the bolt in the said slot, a crank on said spindle, a connecting link between the crank andthe bolt whereby rotation 1. of the handle spindle slides the bolt in its curved guide and the said crank being provided with an 1 over center position'whereby the bolt may be retained in a locked position. 1 2. In an automobile having a deck member provided with an opening and a hinged lid member for closing the said opening, a lock mounted on one of said members comprising in combination a longitudinally arcuate bolt having a bolt for slidably supporting the said bolt, an elongated slotin the said 'bolt; a rotatable spindle projected through the slot in the said bolt at approximately right angles to the-bolt, a crank fixed to the end of the said spindle, a linkconnecting the crank with the bolt whereby rotation of the spindle slides the bolt, said bolt head being adapted to engagea keeper in the form of a hook carried-by the other of said members whereby when the bolt is slid into interengagement with its keeper it travels along an arcuate path and draws the deck lid inwardly toward the deck and stresses the same longitudinally toward said keeper. y

In an automobile having a deck member with an opening and a hinged-lid member for closing the same, a lock mounted on one of said members comprising a longitudinally arcuate bolt provided with a bolt head in the form of a hook, a correspondingly arcuate guide for slidably supporting the said bolt, manual means for sliding the-said bolt in either direction in its guide, said bolt head being adapted to engage a keeper in the form of a hook carried by the other of said members and transmit manual force into a longitudinal tension in said bolt whereby when the bolt is slid into interengagement with its keeperit travels along an arcuate path and
