United States Patent O 3,103,805 SLIDABLE CLGSURE LOCK Flay D. Crosswell, Hartford City, Ind., assignor vto Overhead Door Corporation, Hartford City, Ind. Filed Ilan. 8, 1962, Ser. No. 164,716 15 Claims. (Cl. 70-142) This invention relates to a lock for reciprocatingly mounted closures such as upwardly acting doors and the like. The main objects of this invention are,
First, to provide a lock for upwardly acting closures and the like which may be opened trom either side.
Second, to provide an upwardly acting door or closure lock means which is particularly desirable for use on upwardly acting doors or closures for vehicles in which the closure is securely anchored to the sill and in a manner to prevent substantial vibration thereof relative to the sill, thereby preventing noise and minimizing wear on the parts.
Third, to provi-de -a locking means having these advantages which can be opened from the inner side ot the door Without the aid of a key, 'but which may be locked from the outer side to prevent opening of the closure without the aid of a key.
Objects relating to details and economies of `the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is deiined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

FIG. 9 is an enlarged fragmentary view on aline corresponding to broken Il-ine 9-9 of FIG. 4, illustrating details of the locking detent. y
FIG. 10 is :a fragmentary view of parts illustrated in FIG. 2 with the 4closure in slightly raised position.
I have illustrated my invention as embodied in a tru'ck or the like as it is especially adapted in such use, although it should lbe understood that it is ladapted for use for closures, particularly of the upwardly Aacting type for various uses.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the body of a vehicle, 2 the door frame, and 3 the sill. rFhe door, designated generally by the numeral 4, is of the upwardly acting sectional type, the sections' having hinge connections not here illustrated, as the door structural details and the hinge connections are of various types and such details form no part of my present invention.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated comprises `an inner casing member S having `a substantially flat body portion with an integral |bottom wall 6 having a bolt receiving opening therein designated by the numeral S prolCe vided with `a downwardly projecting tiange 9 which constitutes bolt stops, and -a bolt guard when the door is in closed position and ya keeper engaging member, see FIG. 2. This inner casing member is provided with integral bearings for the several movable parts which will Abe reerred to as the movable parts are described. It is also provided with stops for certain of the movable parts. One structural advantage is that this member may be formed as a stamping.
The outer casing member 10 Ihas inwardly projecting side walls 11 having outwardly projecting llanges 12 disposed in overlapping relation to the inner `casing member and secured thereto by bolts I3, the ybolts in the embodiment illustrated 'also serving to clamp the lock as a unit to the b-ottom section 14 of the closure, the heads of the bolts being on the outer side of the `closure and the nuts on the inner side. The outer casing member is provided with a top wall 15 and its `front and side walls overlap or enclose the casing bottom wall 6. Thus arranged, the movable parts are `all effectively housed, except the projecting end of the holt which must project to engage the keeper, designated generally by the numeral 17, .and which is xedly mounted as by welds indicated at I8, see FIG. 2, to the sill 3. The bolt 19 is pivotally or swingably mounted on the bearing member 20 on the casing member 5 with its keeper engaging jaw 21 projecting through the opening in the bottom wall 6, which is dimensioned to permit keeper disengaging movement of the bolt, which position is shown by dotted lines in FIGS. 2 and 4. The bol-t is yieldably urged to keeper engaging position by the spring 22, which is mounted on 'the lock 23 struck up from the casing member 5, the other end of the spring being engaged in a seat 24 provided therefor in the bolt, see FIG. 4.
The bolt releasing member 25 is pivotally mounted on the projecting bearing or support member 26 on the casing and is provided with a noncircular opening 27 wit-h which the `stern of the handle 2S is engaged, 4this handle being on the inner side of this locking means so that the door can be released from the inside Iof the vehicle without the use of a key.
A stop 29 is provided to Limit the retracting movement of the member 25, but it has no other functional purpose. The `lock is provided with an upwardly projecting arm 30 of substantial length which is yieldingly urged by the spring 22 against the second bolt release member 31, which is povotally mounted on the bearing member 32 struck up lfrom the casing member 5 which is provided with a stop 33 for the member 3-1, the spring acting on the bolt normally yieldingly urging the release member 31 against -this stop, the actuated posi-tion of the member 31 being illustrated by dotted lines. The member 31 is actuated lfrom the handle or hand piece 34 shown by dotted lines in FIG. l2 and -by full lines in FIG. 1. The details of securing the Shanks of the handles to the parts are not illustrated, but attention is :direc-ted to FIG. 6 in which the bearing portion 35 is supported in the bearing member 32 on the inner casing member, and an aligned bearing portion 36 on the outer casing member. In considering these parts, it should lbe borne in mind that they are designed to minimize structural oost. The bolt actuating member 31 is 'locked by -the bolt detent 37 pivot-ally mounted on the bearing member 38 on the inner casing member, which is engageable with the projecting portion ,58 on the end of the member 31. This bolt detent or lock member 37 Iis provided with a slot -39- into which the lug 44B on the key actuated member 41 engages. The details of the lock member, :designated generally by the numeral 42, are not illustrated as they are of 'a commer` cial type with the addition thereto of the detent engaging lug. The lock member is mounted on the bracket 43 which has a tubular bushing portion 44 projecting through an opening 45 provided therefor in the closure member, see FIG. 9. As stated, the keeper 17 is provided with a downwardly inclined lug 46 with which the bolt engages when the closure is in completely closed position, see FIG. 2, and the downwardly projecting tiange 9 on the bolt opening in the casing bottom member 6 projects into the bolt receiving opening of the keeper with the closure in closed posi-tion, see FIG. 2, and this provides a guard for the bolt s-o that it cannot be manipulated from the outer side of the door.
To properly align the closure and prevent vibration thereof, the closure aligning and anchoring member 47 is provided, this desirably having a pointed outer end 43 which projects through an opening in the keeper formed by `a downwardly projecting flange 49, the anchor member being a sliding tit in the ange of this opening, thereby performing a double -function of guiding the closure to locking position and to minimize vibration. This member 47 is provided with an upwardly projecting part SG overlapping the ilan-ge 12 of the lock member and secured thereto Iby some of the attaching bolts, see FIGS. 2, 3 and 6. With the parts thus arranged, a very secure locking means is provided, one in which all of the parts are on the inner side of the closure, except the outer end of the key actuated member 42 and the bolt heads and handle 34. The parts of my invention may be economically produced and assembled and when assembled provide a very strong and rigid structure.
I have illustrated and described my invention in a highly practical embodiment thereof. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe modications and adaptations to particular closures, as it is believed tha-t this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody my invention to meet particular structural conditions. As stated,`rny invention is particularly desirable `for use in connection with upwardly acting closures of trucks, motor vehicles, rai-lway cars, and the like. However, certain features of my invention are adapted for use and are highly desirable for use in closures of the reciprocating type in stationary structures.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
l.
