Description

I w. G. PL Has. 1 Steamo0 er.
No. 225,584. Patentd Mar. 16, I880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. FLANDERS, OF LANSINGBURG, NEW YORK.
STEAM-COOKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,584, dated March 16, 1880.
Application filed. February 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. FLANDERS, of Lansingburg, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Domestic Steam-Cookers, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of my invention are to render the closing of the cover and extension steamtight, so as to prevent the escape of odorsfrom the food being cooked-such as onions, cabbage, salt codfish, and the like-entering the room through the escape of steam, as in steamtion of the cooker, which is made with its bottom somewhat larger than the boiler-hole over which it is to be placed. Bis the lower steamchamber, provided with an open wire-net diaphram or support, 0, (shown removed therefrom in Fig. 3,) and upon which meats, vegetables, or other food may be placed to be cooked by steam arising from water placed in the boiler A, which is supplied with a watersupply tube, D, placed upon the outside of the steam-chamber B, and extending downward to the boiler portion A, where it enters the side of the same, and thence downward upon the inside to within about one-half of an inch of the bottom, where it terminates.
To the top of the supply-tube D is aflixed a cap, 6, which may be removed to renew the water in the boiler, and when it is evaporated or nearly boiled away, leaving the lower end of the supply-tubeD open or above the water, the steam enters the same and ascends to the whistle t, provided in the cap 0, where it escapes, thereby indicating to the cook or atrequired in the the side of the boiler A, and passes downward through its bottom near the center, so as to have an outlet within the'boiler-hole of a stove when placed thereon.
To theupper end of tube or steam-escape pipe E is fitted a socket, g, which receives the end of a steam-escape pipe, E, which is secured to the outside of the steam-chamber B which is provided at its lower edge or bottom portion with a downward-projecting flange, F, which is beveled inwardly and has a packingband of rubber or other flexible material, H, surrounding said flange and secured in any suitable manner, so that when the flange thus packed is inserted within the mouth of the lower portion, as shown in Fig. 2, and pressed down ward, it will form a steam-tight joint, and be held connected thereto by flatsprings I, secured to the outside of the extension or steam chamber 13 their lower ends being provided with hooks turned inwardly, so as to engage with the projecting rim or catches, as shown at the left-hand side of Fig. 1, and at the opposite side the spring I is shown disengaged from the catch by being forced outward near its lower end by a short hinged lever, U, which, if pressed downward, forces the hook from the catch, and thus permits the removal of the upper portion whenever desired.
To the top of steam-chamber B Fig. 1, is shown a cover, K, provided-with flat springs L, to the outer free ends of which is pivoted a loop, M, which is hooked over a catch, 0, upon the steam-chambers B, which holds the said cover K steam-tight with the mouth of the steam-chamber, as shown. This cover has a downward-projecting flange, N, which is beveled inwardly and. surrounded by an elastic rubber or flexible packing-band, P, secured thereto in any suitable manner, and such cover is made to fit steam tight upon either the upper or lower steam-chamber, as shown.
To the interior of the cover K is secured a spring-valve, R, which opens upward by the pressure of steam generated within the cooker,
which, when increased beyond the pressure thatmay berequired in cooking, passes through said valve R and enters the short angle-pipe S, which fits into a socket at the top of the steamescape pipe E, thus conveying all odors arising from cooking cabbage, onions, or the like In combination with steam-chamber B hav- IO directly into the stove and fire, where'they ing the flat hooked springs I, the hinged lepass off without entering the room. vers J, constructed and arranged to operate T represents three or more feet or legs prosubstantially as shown and described, as and 5 jecting downwardly from the lower edge of for the purposes set forth.

Having thus described my invention, what JOHN A. ALGER,
