STEAM COOKING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,526, dated June 7, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHANNES FLEISCHER, a citizen of Germany, residing at (lologne, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain 5 new and useful Improvements in Steam (looking Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oftheinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertai us to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to that class of steam cooking apparatuses in which a series of cylindrical vessels or pots are fitted one within the other, or are superposed so as to form a vertical nest of pots or vessels.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and then setforth in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sec tional view of a cooking apparatus construct- 2 5 ed according to the present invention. Fig. 2
is a transverse section taken through the heatin g chamber or base containing the means for generating steam. Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sections taken upon different horizontal o planes passing through the apparatus.
The apparatus is heated by means of a gas or petroleum burner or coal-stove. In the present instance a cylindrical base, A, serves for the reception of the gas-stove B. The
3 5 lower portion, 0, of the cylinder or base A serves as a water-reservoir, which is traversed by a vertical air-supply pipe, D. to is a draincock for drawing off the hot water. b b b are legs upon which the cylinder or base rests.

Upon a flange, d, or projecting lugs located near the top of the base A, rests a cylindrical boiler, E, the bottom F of which, in order to increasethc heating -surface thereof, is provided with a dome-shaped extension, G. The steam generator or boiler E is filled with water and the soup-pot H is inserted therein. The boiler E and a cylindrical bottom-exten- 0 sion, I, of the soup-pot serve to form an airtight joint, similar to a hydraulic packing, between the vessels H and E. One end of a steam-pipe, e, is secured to the soup-pot, the other end of said pipe being provided with a brass collar, 00, which fits intoadepending ring or socket, z, on the pot K, so as to insure a s'team-tightjoint at the point where the pipe 0 enters the steam-space of the pot K.
A roasting or baking vessel or pot, K, is fitted upon the pot H. It has two bottoms, g andf, and the space 19 between the same is connected by the aforesaid pipe 0 with the pot H. The lower bottom, f, of the baking or roasting vessel K is inclined toward the pipe 6, so as to carry off the water of condensation. 0 is a vertical pipe connected with the bottom, 9, and ending in an upper collar or plug, 1 The vessels K and H are adjusted or registered upon each other by means of a flange, d and in order to secure a tight fit between 2 and 0c the vessel K rests upon 00, and also upon two points, 02 and 20, formed of small globes, which, together with 00, constitute the corners of an equilateral triangle.
L is another vessel, which serves for the reception of vegetables and potatoes placed in the insertible vessels M and N fitted into the same. This vessel L is guided into position by means of a flange, (1 similar to d, and rests upon the collar or plug 3 by an upwardly-projecting ring, 0, on its bottom, and is also supported upon the points a and w, of similar construction to a and 10, above described.

, In order to increase the heating-surface the soup and the baking or roasting vessels may be provided with double cylindrical side walls, closed on top, and so connected to the double bottom as to form a continuous space around the sides and bottom of the pot.
The operation of my apparatus is as follows: The bottom support or base, A, and the boiler E are filled with water, after which the souppot H is inserted into the boiler E and supplied with the meat, vegetables, and water as soup ingredients. The boiler is then covered with the bakiu g or roasting vessel K, which receives the meat to be roasted, and is itself covered with the vegetable-pot L. The latter contains the vegetables and potatoes, which are placed in the insertible vessels M and N, or into a single vessel or receptacle. The heating apparatus B is now fired or ignited, which causes the water in the vessel E to boil. The heat which radiates in a downward direction from theheatingapparatus is received and absorbed by the water 0, and thus warm water is produced, which can be drawn off for use at pleasure by means of a drain-cock, a. As soon as steam is formed the soup-pot H is heated with indirect steam from above and below by means of the pipe 0. The same result takes place with the roastingvessel H, and thus the contents of the same are roasted, and at the same time the wet steam is completely shut 011' from the same. Thence the steam enters the upper pot, L, by means of the pipe 0, where it condenses and returns to the water-kettle. The water of condensation is collected on the bottom of the pot L and cannot run off except through the opening in the same.
Instead of the gas or petroleum heating de' vices a coal fire or stove may be employed, in which case the support A is dispensed with.
The cooking vessels or pots, instead of being made cylindrical in shape, may be of any other preferred form, and two or more of such vessels may be placed one upon another.
My apparatus may also be used for boiling tea, coli'ee, milk, and eggs, for which purpose specially-constructed pots are employed. For makin g coffee or tea the pots are so constructed that theboilin g water is caused to pass through the substances by means of steam-pressure. For the purpose of boiling eggs a pot having a. sieve or perforated bottom is employed, the eggs being placed upon the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In a cooking apparatus, the combination of a base or support, A, serving as a hot-water reservoir, and having avertical air-supply tube, D, and openings in its walls for the escape of the products of combustion, with a heating apparatus arranged between said openings and the air-su )ply-tube, and a superposed boiler or cooking-vessel, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a cooking apparatus, the combination of the cooking-vessel H, having a shell, I, depending from its bottom, with the steam-gencrating vessel E, inclosing said shell I and made of the same length as the latter, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a cooking apparatus, the combination of a cooking-vessel having a vertical steamtube provided with a collar or packin g-plug at its upper end, with a superposed cooking-vessel having a double bottom or steam-chamber and a ring or socket for receiving the collar of thesteam-tube, as and for the purpose setforth.
4. The combination of the top steaming chamber or vessel, L, having an apertured bottom, the cooking-vessel K, arranged below the latter, having a steam-tube entering said apertured bottom and communicating with a steamspace or double bottom of the cooking-vessel K, with a steam-generating vessel and heating apparatus, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a cooking apparatus, a food receptacle or pot having adouble bottom, the lower plate forming said bottom being inclined or made slanting and provided with a steam-inlet tube, as herein set forth.
