Description

' CIGARETTE HOLDER AND ASH TRAY Filed June 5, 1940 I In vizntor 7 Eta era fizz/dig 3 v By Patented July 22, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a combined cigarette holder and ash tray, the general object of the invention being to adjustably connect an ash tray to a cigarette holder, so that the tray can be moved toward the holder as the cigarette is being consumed whereby ashes from the cigarette will be deposited into the tray, with means whereby the cigarette can be easily extinguished by moving the tray against the lighted end thereof and this without injuring the cigarette so that the cigarette can be relighted when desired.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is*an elevation showing the invention in use with a cigarette.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1 with the cigarette removed.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 with the tray placed close to the holder.
Figure 4 is a view of the supporting rod.
Figure 5 is an end view of the tray.
In these views the numeral l indicates a cigarette holder which is provided with any type of mouthpiece 2 at one end and the other end is enlarged to form a circular recess 3 for receiving an end of the cigarette.
In carrying out my invention I provide an elongated fiat rod 4 which has a split spring ring 5 at one end thereof for removably fitting in the recess 3 of the holder I. The other end of the rod 4 is cut to provide a spring tongue 6. The ash tray is shown at l and is made in the form of a tubular member having its outer end closed and its other end open with holes 8 in the top part adjacent the open end and a substantially T-shaped passageway 9 is formed in along the rod.
the bottom of the tray for the passage of the rod 4. The tongue 6 is pressed even with the rest of the rod 4 and then the free end of the rod 4 is pressed into the passageway 9 and after the tray is pushed past the tongue the tongue will spring out and thus act to resiliently hold the tray to the rod. It will, of course, be understood that as the cigarette is consumed the tray is moved toward the lighted end thereof so that the ashes will be deposited in the tray and if it is desired to extinguish the lighted end of the cigarette it is simply necessary to press lightly the closed end of the tray against the lighted end of the cigarette to put the light out. This can be done without danger to the cigarette so that the cigarette can be relighted when necessary or desirable.
A handle forming part II) is attached to the small end of the tray so that it can be moved Thus it will be seen that I have provided simple means for catching ashes from a cigarette held in a holder and for extinguishing the cigarette when necessary or desired, with means whereby the attachment can be removed from the holder whenever desired.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understoood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a device of the class described, a cigarette holder, a bar, a split spring ring at one end of the bar fitting in the mouth of the holder, a tubular member having its outer end closed and forming a tray, the bottom of the member having a passageway therein for receiving the bar, and a spring tongue at the outer end of the bar.
EDWARD J QUILTY.
