ASH RETAINING CIGARETTE HOLDER Filed Dec. 10, 1956 v Patented Oct. 19, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE as 'n-na'rammzz i asm nonnan Wallace Er Walden, nmmmu. Mex. Application izlisslsglslriiz No. 115,:1:
This invention relates to a holder-or the like for cigarettes and itlaim's to provide, a novel construction wherein the ashes resulting from combustion will be retained within the holder and wherein a cigarette cannot ignite adjacent articles with which it may contact, yet permitting iree draft for combustion purposes, and to further provide a construction, which although holding the cigarette, will more closely than heretofore, simulate the direct engagement of the cigarette by the lips andgive a more natural and enjoyable smoke.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:-
Figure 1 is a view of the invention in side ale-- vation, v
Figure 2 is a view of. the invention in central longitudinal section, showing a cigarette in "place therein,
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the screen sec- 35 tion detached, and
Figure 4 is a view in perspective on an enlarged scale of the reinforcing members for the screen section. l
Referring specifically to the drawing wherein a like reference characters designate like orsimiiar parts, a cigarette of conventional form is disclosed at II and my improvements comprise a mouth piece It and a screen enclosure or cage l2, said parts-lland I! being detachably interas fitted, completely enclosing the cigarc'tteand being of the same length collectively, as the ciga l rette to insure initial operative positioning of the 01! any desired shape such, as quadrangular or otherwise polygonal in cross section, to guard against rolling.
The screen section I! is preferably made from metallic screen material of. twenty meshes to the 5 lineal inch. It is cylindrical, closed at one end and at the inner end has reenforcing and secu'ring elements l8 0! U-shape, clinched thereto, reeniorcing theedges, and such elements are relatively close together. The parts are so con- 10 structed that the elements it are slightly farther apart than the diametrically opposite portions of the wall in the enlargement II so that when the sections it are connected with the holder, by relative sliding movement, there will be comprall5. sibn. for movement of the elements." toward each other to the end that they will have a tendency to expand within the enlarged portion Ii and thus better separately connect the It will be realized that the cigarette may =be ignited through the cage or screen I! but that the meshes are of such a size as to collect the ashes and retain them. Also it will be realised that the meshes will not permit the flre or iiame to pass therethrough, which is highly advantageous in reducing the tire hazard, since contact oifthe screen or device, should it fall out of the hand and engage adiacent structure, will not ignite it.
7 Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit; and scope of the invention.
I claim asmy invention:-
A device oi. the class described comprising a tubular screen element adapted to surround a 5. cigarette, and a holder for the cigarette and screen element, said holder having e bers large en u h to hold the cigarette, said bore having an enlarged portion, one end of said screen being disposed in said enlarged portion and com- 40 pressed, said-end having a plurality oi. reentorcing elements ot U-shape surrounding the same and being in spaced relation, said elements being secured to the screen, and said holder being relatively thin at the mouth engaging portion. and 4s being flexible sofas. to simulate the yielding of the end, of the cigarette, in the mouth.
